- "Heroes - "Chapter Twelve/Thirteen: Upon This Rock/Let it Bleed" - Jan. 4, 2010
The Mohinder voice-over is back talking about the ways to define our fragile existence as Nathan falls to his death, we see a bunch of Hiro flashbacks as he's grabbed by the head by Samuel's Rasta mentalist, Damien, Emma learns how to play her cello and considers going back to medical school, and Samuel kills Joseph, Noah's apartment is ransacked by the amazing replicating man Eli, and Claire decides to stay at the carnival to soul search.
Claire is picking up trash when Eli starts ogling her. She chats with tattoo girl Lydia who advises her to take pancakes to Samuel to suck up. He's looking through the files Eli stole when she arrives. She recognizes the box. He says he's shared history with Noah but he's more interested in the future, the discovery of their homeland. He wants her to stay. She says she has to go back to class. He tells her he's off to the city to find someone who is essential their plan to finding freedom and an ordinary place to live. Either way it's her choice to stay or go. Eli eyes her as she and Samuel part ways. Samuel tells another version of him to keep an eye on her and make sure she doesn't leave.
Hiro pops up In Tokyo at a market spouting nonsense about needing to find Sancho Panza. A woman nearby cries for help and Hiro runs over to help thinking he's a Jedi knight and saves her purse, announcing, "There can be only One!". He then babbles about Cylons and Dulcinea. Cops arrive and arrest him.
Samuel takes a walk and stops by a rock. We cut to a flashback of him listening to an 8-track while trying to move the same rock as a youngster and his brother telling him to give it up. Joseph doubts him but Samuel says he's going to move big things. Joseph taunts him that he's doing it all to impress a girl named Vanessa that they don't even live near anymore. We cut back to the present and Samuel reiterating his threat for Joseph to just wait and see how awesome he's going to be.
Claire has lunch at the carnival and spies Eli staring at her again. Lydia is busy telling her daughter to stay away from a new boy. Claire is glad to hear a normal mom/daughter argument. She wonders if things would've been better if they had been here. Lydia snarks that it's paradise. Claire wonders if Lydia knows why Samuel wanted her here. She says Samuel is obsessed with bringing new people in and spent all morning in his trailer working on it. Claire goes to the trailer to check out the box but Eli is there protecting the trailer in all his guises.
The cops have brought Hiro to the office and Ando. He's still spouting literary/pop culture gibberish. Ando says he'll help him and the cops uncuff him, offering mental help. Ando explains he has a brain tumor which is why he's talking crazy.
At the hospital Emma goes through the mail and finds a letter from her medical school. They can't re-admit her this year and encourage her to try again next year. She goes home and before she can play her cello to unwind, she gets a visitor: Samuel. He signs to her that he's like her, gifted. She tries to send him away but he tells her he's the one who sent her the cello and shows her the compass tattoo, which is also on the cello.
Ando tries to deal with Hiro as his sister suggests going to a neurosurgeon. Ando thinks he's trying to give them clues: Sherlock Holmes, Star Trek, Star Wars, X-Men. He's ashamed he knows the Danger Room reference, then realizes he has to get Hiro's comics to figure it out.
Emma asks why Samuel sent the cello. He says he's interested in "people like us." She wonders how he knows about her. He says another helped him find her and that they're all connected. She invites him in. He says the cello was originally for someone else close to him but one day he lost her. He goes to the cello and looks at it and says it's found it's proper home. She says the last time she played it cracked the wall. He said she did it with her fear, not the cello. He says he's there to help free her from her fear. He shows her a picture of a man, Ian Michaels, saying he needs help finding him, he too was scared of his gift and went crazy, with moss and flowers growing inhis footsteps. Samuel thinks he lives in Central Park. Emma wonders how she can help.
It's night at the carnival and Claire is toting around stuffed animals for the game booths. Eli is watching. And stalking. Claire tries to run and they all follow her into the house of mirrors. Of course. She confronts him with many versions of herself, fakes him out and whacks him with a chair. She goes out the back door straight to Samuel's trailer and looks through the files. There are files on Matt Parkman, Maya Herrera, Eden McCain, Claire, a Petrelli, among others. She finds pictures of the desert and a map and a photo of young Samuel and Joseph. Eric Doyle, the puppet man, takes control of her and brings her out, mad that she's rifling through Samuel's things. He asks what's up. He thinks she's a spy working for her dad. She says she's not, she's just curious why Samuel is collecting people. Doyle says she sees the worst in people and makes her put something to her throat. She says Samuel is planning something, he says perhaps but he's not going to let her ruin it for him.
Ando is trying to figure out Hiro's oblique clues with Don Quixote and Spider-man and Batman. He figures out "swamp dragons" guarding "Castle Arkham" mean he wants to go to a mental hospital on Arkham Road in Florida.
In the park, Samuel explains that Emma's gift is more than synethesia, it's that her emotions can become one with the music and bring people to her. He wants her to bring Ian, who lives in the park, to them with her playing by concentrating on him as she does. She plays and the man comes to them on the bench. Samuel tries to calm him, tells him to let the music fill him up. Emma smiles at him as he leans on a barren tree and brings the dying leaves to life.
They bring him to the hospital. He has an infection but will be well in a few days. Samuel thanks her for her help and says if she ever wants to join them she's welcome. They could use a doctor and a signer. He gives her a compass. The crazy park man, all cleaned is glad to see that he's not alone with his special gift. Samuel takes him "home." As they walk out of the hospital they see news of a plane crash with Nathan Petrelli.
Claire keeps trying to convince Doyle that Samuel is hiding something. Doyle says that he's good now so Samuel must be too. Joseph was opposed to him but Samuel brought him in. Claire tries to explain that she doesn't want to destroy his home she just wants some answers about why Samuel is bringing people in. Doyle lets her go and tells her to go talk to Lydia and asks what Samuel is planning. Lydia explains that Joseph was the one who made this place a home, was their real father, and they all miss him, and that... Samuel killed him, didn't he, asks Claire? Lydia says Samuel has lost his way and that she's scared for all of them. Claire says this place is special and the only thing wrong with it is Samuel. Lydia says Claire has to find someone who can stop him. She says she will and then Eli grabs her.
Samuel returns and says Eli was wrong to keep her hostage. He says Claire is free to stay or go. She says she'll go after he spills about what happened to Joseph. He says he lost control and that Joseph tattled on them to the government and folks like Danko and her dad. She says this isn't about her dad, but Samuel. Samuel gets teary and admits what he did was awful but Joseph put good people in danger and he wasn't going to let him take away what they had built. She's incredulous that murder was his option. He says she should understand about a father protecting his family. She asks what's happening in the valley. He takes her there and crazy park man, Ian, is there. He's sifting the dust and says he needs water. Samuel brings some forth through a crack in the earth and Ian puts his hands down and begins to spread beautiful green grass and flowers and trees. Claire and Samuel are amazed. Ian says it's beautiful. Samuel says it's Ian, it's who he is. Claire agrees that it's beautiful. She asks what this place is. He says it's their new home and Joseph would've loved it even though he didn't believe Samuel could make it happen. He says this is why he needs a bigger family for the future, a home. She says she has a home and wants to head back. He says she's always free to come back when she wants. She walks away and gets a couple of voicemails. One is Noah and the other Peter. They need to talk.
We cut to Peter walking by Nathan's casket at the funeral. He greets his mother. Noah lurks in the background. Claire arrives in a cab. She gets to her dad and he says he's glad she's safe. She wonders from what, where she came from or this lie. He says he knows she has the compass. She says she isn't giving it back.
Peter gives a graveside eulogy for Nathan and all the things that he taught him: ride a skateboard, catch a baseball. He says Nathan taught him to be ready for anything and he is. The soldiers fold the flag and give it to Angela. Then there's a 21 gun salute. And a "missing man" flyover by the Navy.
HEROES IS CONTINUED...
...NOW.
86 HOURS AGO The second hour begins with Peter meeting Noah somewhere outside the city saying he wants to see him. Noah opens his trunk on Nathan's body. Noah says he can handle it and Peter doesn' t have to be part of it. Peter say she does.
At the funeral reception (wake) Peter talks with another mourner (secretary Elizabeth?) who inquires if they know what happened yet, he insists it was an accident and surveys the scene.
At the carnival Samuel pores over a blank sheet, touches ink to paper, and an image of woman appears. Then notices a reflection on the ink jar and moves out of the way as Doyle is then thrown into him... by Sylar. Samuel tells Doyle to get people to safety. Sylar says Samuel is just delaying the inevitable. Sylar says having your soul ripped out might weaken a lesser man but not him, he's psyched and back with a plan to feast on all the tasty powers of the ever-growing family. Samuel says he has big plans for Sylar and if he kills him he'll never know. Sylar says everyone has big plans for him and goes to do the head rip special but finds he can't make the fatal cut. Samuel stirs up a small earth tornado that rips off half of Sylar's face and topples him.
Claire is putting on mascara when there's a knock at the door. It's Noah checking up on her. He wants to give her a lift. She doesn't want it, since he lied to her, again, this time about Nathan's death and what he did, switching Sylar. She wonders if he forgets what Sylar did to her. Noah says he shouldn't have done it. She says he did and she needs time to grieve without being reminded of why.
Back at the funeral reception, Angela meets Peter by the window saying they've never been good with death. She asks how he is. He says he's okay. She says Nathan was a better liar. He says he must've gotten that from her. She says she understands his wrath but that he shouldn't go after Sylar because she can't bear to lose him too.
Claire arrives and Peter pulls her into the kitchen. He asks after Noah. She says she asked him not to come. He asks if she's pissed. Yup. Him too. She starts to angrily chop vegetables wondering if they thought they could fool them forever. She cuts herself but doesn't heal because he still has the Haitian's ability, then gets her a band-aid. She's psyched to feel normal pain. She goes back to chopping and says that they are there to mourn him which is gladly ordinary. She laughs and says she hopes he can find heaven since he was such a terrible navigator when he was flying. She recalls that he was annoyed when she dated West, a boy who could fly. Daddy issues. She says she and West are still Facebook friends. She says telling stories is good, it makes her feel better. She says Peter must have a bunch. He hesitates instead of telling one, they take the chopped vegetables out to the party.
Noah heads home and there's a shadow passing out on the balcony that he doesn't notice. It appears and disappears in a flash as he takes off his jacket and opens the window. It's Edgar. He enters through the window and approaches Noah from the back before Noah whips around and tazes him.
He goes down to the sushi restaurant downstairs to borrow the freezer and the premises. He offers the proprietor a big wad of cash. He doesn't want to close the restaurant. "Iron Maiden" aka Lauren arrives and the owner departs with a smirk and kicks everyone out. Noah asks if she brought the truth serum. She did. He put Edgar in the freezer since that slows down his speedster qualities and added some quaaludes for good measure. They're going to pump him full of truth serum and get all the details on the carnival.
Samuel has put Sylar in Lydia's trailer so she can "help" him. Samuel wants her to figure out why Sylar is different- he's no longer cold-blooded killer or blank slate but something else. He had a chance to do the head-ripping thing but couldn't. Samuel thinks Lydia can figure out what he is now. She tries to protest being pushed around. He says it's her gift, prying out the demons of hearts and souls with her soft hands.
She goes to him and touches his sleeping figure, rubs his face, awakens him, compliments his baby soft skin. He asks what she's doing. She says she's going to help figure out what's wrong with him. He says nothing. She says she heard different and wants to find out why, she tries to kiss him and asks him what he's afraid of. They start making out and getting it on and she starts getting flashes of all of his past lives, including Nathan's and Matt's memories. She stops kissing him and surmises that he's lonely, afraid that he's going to die alone, and that he wants love but feels he doesn't deserve it. He wonders if she knows what he does to people like her. Yup, she knows. He says she sees what people want and desire and hope for, he likes it and starts kissing her again. He asks what the tattoos are for. She says they're a map to help him find what he needs. He grabs her head and says she doesn't want to help him, she's manipulating him to kill Samuel. He took her power- like he did Elle's- he says he doesn't have to kill to get them, he just likes to. She says not anymore, he's impotent. He punches her off of him and leaves.
Back at the funeral, Claire looks at a picture of Peter and Nathan. Angela says she tried to find a photo of Claire but there weren't any. Claire reiterates the story: Nathan wanted to acknowledge her, Angela thought it was bad for his career. Angela says Claire has grown up well and Peter is the one she's worried about, how he's going to grieve and how he spends all his time listening to his police scanner and trying to mete out justice. Angela asks Claire to help him, since she knows he will never trust his mother again.
Claire goes to the roof and finds Peter's police scanner. There's a hostage crisis in progress and we cut to that scene. Peter sneaks up behind the cop on the scene, incapacitates him, Haitian style, and goes to save the day. He tends to a woman who's been shot. Claire shows up. He has her put pressure on the woman's wound and tells her to stay put. She yells after him she's the bullet catcher. A disgruntled employee has shown up to shoot people who fired him. Peter runs off to stop the gunman, he wants to be more than a band-aid.
Noah goes postal on Edgar, who claims he doesn't know what Samuel wants with Claire. Noah grabs one of Edgar's knives, complimenting the handmade blade. As he holds it to Edgar's throat, Lauren arrives to good cop it up pulling Noah out. She says torture doesn't work, she knows, and this looks like vengeance. She said he needs to start talking to Edgar and leave his emotions out of it. Honey vs. vinegar. Noah noticed he doesn't have a compass. She tells him to find out why.
Back at the office, the gunman, Adam Malamut, confronts Claire and Peter. Peter explains about his bad day: his brother's death, his own part in the staging of it, his need for vengeance on the real guilty party. The gunman wonders why he's telling him this. Peter says he understands wanting to punish those who've hurt you. That he wants to make the man who killed his brother scream but he's trying to be hopeful. He promised his brother he'd be a hero and he hopes the gunman doesn't make him a liar, not today. The gunman shoots him.
Peter lies on a gurney saying it hurts every time. Claire says that's what happens when you get shot. Peter points out that he did take the guy down. Peter wants to get up. Claire tries to convince him to stop his vigilante ways. She grabs his hand, he grabs her power and heals, and she says she won't always be there to be his personal safety net. He says he'll hold on to the power then. She wonders what kind of life this is. He says it keeps him moving, operating on instinct, no time to think. She says Nathan would be mad at him for this, since he's not honoring his brother's memory, he's avoiding it. He says if he thinks about it and mourns, then it's real. He says he misses him. She says her too, and hugs him.
Noah tries a kinder, gentler tactic with Edgar, offering tea. Noah wonders why he wants him alive. He points out that he doesn't have a compass and alone. He wonders what Edgar is doing out here. Exiled, for learning the truth about Samuel killing Joseph. He apologizes for cutting Noah up. He says he thought if he brought Noah back to Samuel he might let him back in. He says he's afraid of what Samuel is going to do to his family. Noah proposes they team up.
Sylar is looking for more ink but Samuel points out he destroyed it when he threw Doyle on him. Samuel wonders why Sylar wants a tattoo to see where he wants to go when he is where he needs to be. Samuel says Lydia (skulking nearby) told him why he can't kill. He says Sylar sees everyone as a manipulative bastards who try to con him. Sylar says Samuel is trying to do that. Samuel says he's hurting and he sees that, and he's not special, everyone wants someone who understands and cares for them. Sylar sees the drawing of the woman. It's Vanessa, Samuel's lost love. He says he'd move mountains for her if she asked. She's not there because Samuel is afraid she will reject him. Sylar tells him to quit pretending that he knows what Sylar's feeling. Samuel says he knows Hiro told Sylar that he would die alone and it's haunting him. Samuel says he knows him, he is him, not a good guy, but not all bad either. He's found love, acceptance, and forgiveness here and Sylar can too. Sylar says if that's true then let the tattoo show him that and he'll stay. Samuel says as a carny he lives for games of chance.
Back at Noah's apartment, Edgar is warming up with Miso soup and he's drawn a map of the carnival for them. They don't know how to get back without a compass. Lauren points out Claire has a compass. Noah doesn't want to involve her. Edgar says they can get back in through Lydia who has no great love for Samuel. Lauren and Noah plan a raid, Edgar worries about others getting hurt. Lauren says they'll try to manage the collateral damage. Edgar doesn't like the sound of this. Noah makes it worse saying they will take care of everyone, find them homes, separate them, re-integrate them into normal society. Edgar argues they have a home. Lauren likens it to a cult. Now that he's warm, he slips out of the cuffs and still has one of his knives and says it was a mistake coming to him. Noah tries to reason with him saying Edgar isn't a violent man, Edgar points out that Noah is though. He speeds out, grabbing the plans he drew up along the way.
Samuel puts the ink to Sylar's naked torso. It spreads out, working it's way across his chest, over his shoulder and back, and eventually lands on his right forearm. Samuel and he appraise it and Sylar says Samuel was wrong, he doesn't belong here. He puts on his shirt and takes off.
Claire and Peter sit on a rooftop and talk. She says she's heading back to school unless she needs him to stay. He promises that he's fine. He asks her to give her old boyfriend West a call for him. She asks why. He just smiles.
Noah can't believe he blew it. Lauren thinks honey was still the right move. She says she's seen this with other cult leaders. Noah worries that he has his hooks in Claire, too. Lauren says she's still his father and that bridges can be rebuilt. He tries to call Claire. No answer.
On the roof, Peter looks at a picture of himself and Nathan and takes flight.
Samuel tapes together his picture of Vanessa and smiles, then sets it in a drawer with other drawings of her.
Claire returns to her dorm room where Gretchen has left a note that she's out studying. She pulls out her phone and sees the missed call from her dad and flops down on her bed, feet toward the window. The camera pulls back through the window we see a forearm with Claire's face on it. Sylar is lurking in midair outside her window: "Hello, cheerleader."
