There are no political messages in this film despite some rather silly reviews.
bnitcamela30 April 2022
All in all a clever but unoriginal take on adolescence and school. It was a sweet story about some friendships and romance with a few funny moments. It's on Hulu. What else does anyone need to know.

And P. S. someone saying a girl fingered everyone in the school isn't "far left" messaging and neither is Hallmark "far right." Sheesh what's wrong with this country these days?

Surprisingly sweet
lumaestri29 April 2022
It's a classic coming of age / High School romance movie, so expect all the elements you'd usually expect.

This being said, even with the most common genres, you can put heart into it or less so.

And this one definitely has heart!

Both Blanchard and Cravalho put emotional depth into their performance, Alvarez and Dunn are nice as the couple/Best friends of the protagonist (and Alvarez especially has the funniest zing and quips), the principal has no time for students' drama...

Many of these kind of movies feel like a series of pre-chosen scenes that neither the actors nor the director seem to really believe in nor be into - this one felt like they were enjoying their time there, and it passes on to the audience.

Simple, yet sweet, relaxing and enjoyable.

Simple but effective (possible Spoiler)

Warning: Spoilers
A coming of age queer movie where the coming out isn't the main part of the plot but the actually love story is. Love and crushes often are different in realty than what we imagine in our minds and that is exactly what the movie tries to show us. Quite predictable in the developement of the relationship between Paige and AJ and the final reveal of the identity of KP. Nonetheless, it was enjoyable and smart in all the little refence to the queer comunity (Paige wearing the Girl in red t-shirt among the others).

Good feature film debut of the director Sammi Cohen.

Much more than just a generic romantic comedy...
paul_haakonsen5 May 2022
As I sat down to watch the 2022 romantic comedy from writers Kirsten King and Casey Rackham I wasn't really expecting a whole lot, since this was clearly aimed at a younger audience. But I figured I would give the movie a view, since I hadn't already seen it.

And I must admit that director Sammi Cohen managed to put the storyline to life on the screen in a very entertaining and enjoyable way. This movie was entertaining from beginning to end, and I think it had a very beautiful message at heart as well.

The storyline in "Crush" is well-written, and it encompasses a multitude of different aspects actually, and with it mainly being that of finding true love and being comfortable with whom and what you are. So thumbs up to writers Kirsten King and Casey Rackham for their accomplishment.

Now, "Crush" wouldn't have been such an enjoyable movie without the cast ensemble that they had managed to put together for the various roles and characters. I am not familiar with lead actresses Rowan Blanchard (playing Paige) and Auli'i Cravalho (playing AJ), but they were so well-cast for the movie and their roles, not to mention they had great on-screen chemistry together. They really brought a lot of charm and layers to the movie. "Crush" also had some memorable performances and appearances from Isabella Ferreira (playing Gabriela), Aasif Mandvi (playing Coach Murray) and Megan Mullally (playing Angie).

"Crush" is a movie that not only proved to be entertaining and enjoyable, but it is also a movie that very much leaves you with a feel-good sensation. I was genuinely entertained by the movie, despite of it being somewhat generic in its storyline at times. But definitely a worthy accomplishment from director Sammi Cohen.

My rating of "Crush" lands on a seven out of ten stars.

It's fine.
kelhillis6 May 2022
As a certified gay, I was very excited for this movie, but unfortunately, it falls kinda flat. You can tell it was written by people who have been out of touch with high schoolers for quite some time, but if you can look past that, it's not too bad.

Auli'i Cravalho also outshines the rest of the cast by far - if this movie was an argument for her to get better roles, I'd believe it. The discrepancies between her performance and Rowan Blanchard's were distracting at times. But, overall, it's a cheesy teen romance, nothing more or less. I can't say I'd recommend it for its content, but if you just want something cheesy, it's an okay watch.

Love the representation
ashleybreadregui9 May 2022
I need a sequel! Finally, we can have a light-hearted, light-angst sapphic movie. All my life, I've been watching movies of this genre that had straight people in it. I loved those movies too, of course, but seeing it with sapphics really makes it even better! I can finally see myself in this genre. I love this, please make a sequel!

Predictable teen rom-com
isaacochoterena22 June 2022
This movie may be a predictable romantic comedy, but it doesn't fall on bad examples for teenagers of what love is.

This romantic comedy shows that you will not always find love in the person you like, you will find it in who you least expect it, this becomes a good moral for the teenage audience that begins to experience the attraction to another person, the film also develops this falling in love in a correct way and not ridiculous or toxic, which happens in most movies of this type. The plot is very predictable from the second act, but if you like this genre or belong to the target audience it can be an enjoyable movie. The performances are credible, although the character development is not proportional, while some have an extensive development, others have nothing, the love relationship is well developed although the script does it in a very instantaneous way, the climax and the end may seem a bit ridiculous, although for the genre of this film it is normal to be like that.

This film stands out from the others of the same genre, mainly for not falling into the ridiculous or the toxic, just as it stands out for having LBGT characters and relationships as the main point of the story, especially a lesbian relationship, something that had not been seen recently in a teen romantic comedy.

we need more movies like this
insaneular-2118630 April 2022
Cute, fun movie for teens where being queer is normal. We need more movies like this about girls who like girls where it's not a big deal and just part of their world. Glad kids have this movie.

Cute
blebbe25 July 2022
This is a very cute and light-hearted movie. It's entertaining and fun. The main character is likeable and funny as well. The plot is a little predictable and it lacks a little in depth, but other than that I really enjoyed watching this.

Meh.
cscott233129 April 2022
I was expecting a few laughs but sadly the only line that landed, for me, was "I voted for you b*tch" I always really enjoy Megan Mullally but even she didn't land any jokes (or dirty talk). Michelle Buteau was the best part. Nothing about it was really good or even interesting. Pretty lame.

A perfect movie that knows it's audience and delivers
levitak30 April 2022
I don't often use the word perfect when it comes to a movie but this one comes really close.

This movie is meant to be a lighthearted sapphic romance and it does it's job admirably. You can tell that the writers have spent a lot of time on sapphic Ao3 because they nail every beloved trope perfectly.

The cast is wonderful as well. Auli'i Cravalho is a revelation. I have rarely seen someone representing pining so well Mega Mullaly is hilarious and plays such an amazing mom. Rowan Blanchard does a fine job of playing a gay mess

An especially great thing is that there is zero homophobia in this movie. Not unlike Schitt's Creek queer people here are just allowed to be without having to constantly represent the everyday day they face

Of course this movie is not for anyone. It's meant for the queer community and if you are not part of it a lot of it might go over your head or make you angry(the way several borderline homophobic reviews have already shown).

Cute
pasaribuharisfadli9 May 2022
Crush is a teen flick. Of course, it's predictable. However, being cheesy, cliché, or formulaic doesn't mean it is also bad. As long as its charms, sweetness, and comfort flow organically through the entire film, it will just be fine. Anyway, Dillon is too cute for being straight. Just saying.

Vanilla
AJx9131 July 2022
Competition is stiff, when you have things like "To all the boys," and "Kissing Booth." This just felt so base and vanilla, compared to any other Romantic Comedies. Being simply a queer movie isn't enough.

Fun for teens
nikab-1522313 June 2022
This movie isn't great per se, but it was fun and relatable to watch, for me at least. It's awkward and funny at the same time.

Wasn't a big fan of the ending, but that's my personal cringe.

It's a movie for teen girls, but as you can see the ratings aren't by teenage girls. So I would only reed the ones around 5-8, hope this helps.

It can't be you

Warning: Spoilers
Paige Evans (Rowan Blanchard) attends Miller High School. This is a school where all the kids are good looking. No one is fat or has pimples. All the couples are either same sex or interracial, just like I remembered high school. The black kids aren't too black and most likely have biracial parents. Gabriel has a crush on Gabriel Campos (Isabella Ferreira) while Gabriel's sister AJ (Auli'i Cravalho) has a crush on her. In some bizarre plot twist, Paige is forced onto the track team in order to avoid suspension.

The plot really sucked. The dialogue was clever and the characters were excellent.

Guide: F-word. No sex or nudity.

Better than what I had initially expected.
kslitculture18 September 2022
An interesting take on romantic relations between two girls who share artistic talent. The whole endeavor to find out the anonymous tagger however seemed a tad bit predictable, and clichéd, but it gave a promising attempt to create something distinguished and unique.

Along with the monotony of the plot, is the love triangle that is exceptionally common in teenage romance films. If this movie would have capitalized more on developing the main protagonists (Paige and Aj) in accordance with their passion for art, then would I have felt more of a connection between the two. There was just a lot of silly and somewhat forced humor bits that take away from the passion that is begging to be conveyed.

Ultimately, I am a fan of both Rowan Blanchard, and Auli'i Cravalho, I just wished they would have focused on them more. The other characters were pretty forgettable and annoying.

Typical teen rom-com movie
priyankvashiar10 September 2023
Warning: Spoilers
If you're looking for a typical rom-com movie with some queer characters, but the same old story, this is a good watch. The whole movie is in support of the LGBTQ+ community with good cast and an easy going storyline. Really emphasize how parents sometimes pressure their children to pursue education in academic fields rather than artistic fields. Great street art shown in the movie. Though a bit let down with the music but overall it was a good timepass movie. The characters are more focussed in an American teenage life with more focus on chilling out with underage alcohol in & smoking. Definitely worth a watch for some timepass. Not a serious watch.

Finally a cute queer movie with no traumatic coming out or homophobic comments. Just a lovely first love, coming of age story.

I adored the characters and actors performances, I loved Auli'i Cravalho's in this especially! She did a fantastic job and is absolutely gorgeous!

7/10 - despite the odds and a story that felt very TV movie, some moments really worked in this feature that is among American High's better works with good chemistry among the cast (despite the behind-the-scenes drama)

GOOD TRY BUT POOR FOLLOW THROUGH...!
masonfisk30 November 2023
A Hulu original from 2022. Rowan Blanchard stars here as a gay teen in love, secure in her gayness w/a square lock on the object of her desire (someone she's been in love with since they were young), one Gabriella, played by Isabella Ferreira, but now that they're in high school & to make up for an accusation by the faculty of her being a serial tagger, she begs for time to find the real culprit by joining the track team, a place she reckons he or she is residing. The same team where Ferreira is a member of along w/her sister, played by Auli'I Cravalho, who Blanchard corrals into finding out who the rogue graffiti artist is but due to their close proximity, her feelings for Ferreira are soon rethought since things start to head towards the romantic w/Cravalho. What will Blanchard do in the end? Slight all the way, this topical romance treats its subject matter so fey & fleeting you almost think, apart from the occasional lapse into profanity, this was better suited as Disney fare even though the actors are game & good looking. Also starring Megan Mullally as Blanchard's very understanding mom & Aasif Mandvi as the stern track team coach.

Teala Dunn.....
machinespacebeing19 May 2022
Nice cute romance but the only thing I hated was Teala Dunn. Her and her boyfriend are infuriating, way too much PDA, and her acting is stale at best.

Cute as heck
xxthisiswhoiamxx30 April 2022
This was simple but unexpectedly cute and made me laugh out loud more than expected. It felt current without feeling forced and the humor was on point. The soundtrack also stood out to me with artists like Mal Blum, Tegan and Sara, and Girl In Red. Somebody really did their research and it paid off. We need more movies like this one being made!
