Fleishman Is in Trouble author Taffy Brodesser-Akner is adapting her upcoming book Long Island Compromise for Apple.
Following a multiple-platform bidding war, Apple has landed the rights to develop the dark family drama for television. As she did with Hulu’s Fleishman, Brodesser-Akner will adapt her novel (due July 9 from Random House) for Apple and exec produce alongside Susannah Grant (Erin Brockovich), Sarah Timberman, and former HBO chief Richard Plepler and his Eden Productions.
The drama, which marks a reunion for Brodesser-Akner with Timberman and Grant, is currently in the development stage at Apple. (The iPhone maker and streamer declined to comment.)
Long Island Compromise follows a suburban American family and the lasting impact the patriarch’s weeklong kidnapping has on his wife and three children 40 years later.
Brodesser-Akner, an award-winning journalist for The New York Times, adapted her first novel, Fleishman, for Disney-backed Hulu in 2022. The limited series starring Jesse Eisenberg,...

We now know at least one problem that “The Problem with Jon Stewart” ran into.
Stewart, hosting “The Daily Show” on Monday (as he now does), had FTC Chair Lina Khan as his guest. It was a conversation he says he wanted to have during his days as an Apple TV+ host. It needed to wait for Comedy Central.
“I wanted to have you on a podcast and Apple asked us not to do it,” Stewart told Khan. “They literally said, ‘Please don’t talk to her.'”
Feels a bit more than “creative differences.”
“I think it just shows one of the dangers of what happens when you concentrate so much power and so much decision making in a small number of companies,” Khan responded to Stewart.
Stewart’s inference was that Apple, which he says “has bought 30 AI models,” did not want him to have an AI conversation...

Jon Stewart made headlines in February when he appeared on “CBS Mornings” ahead of his return to hosting Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show” and said that Apple canceled his previous talk show, “The Problem With Jon Stewart,” because “they didn’t want me to say things that might get me in trouble.” On the April 1 episode of “The Daily Show,” Stewart went into greater detail about Apple’s concerns over the direction of his now-axed talk show and corresponding podcast.
Stewart was interviewing Federal Trade Commission chair Lina Khan on “The Daily Show” and told her that he once pitched to have her as a guest on “The Problem” podcast. Considering Khan’s work at the FTC targets tech giants’ monopolistic practices, Apple allegedly did not want Stewart bringing her on the program to presumably talk about such topics.

Jon Stewart has revealed that Apple asked him not to talk to the Federal Trade Commission Chair Lina Khan on his former Apple TV+ show and podcast, The Problem With Jon Stewart.
Khan was a guest on Monday’s episode of Comedy Central’s The Daily Show, and Stewart made the admission during the interview. When the discussion moved on to artificial intelligence, Stewart told Khan that he had wanted to talk to her on The Problem.
“I’ve got to tell you, I wanted to have you on a podcast and Apple asked us not to do it, to have you. They literally said, ‘Please don’t talk to her,'” Stewart said. “I don’t think they cared for you,” he then joked.

Last month, the U.S. Justice Department and more than a dozen state attorneys general sued Apple, claiming that the tech giant has an illegal monopoly over the smartphone market and warning that Apple’s monopoly on smartphones could extend to other areas of the economy, including entertainment.

The last thing TV needs right now is another reboot. So when it was announced in January that Jon Stewart would be returning home to “The Daily Show,” hosting the show on Mondays through the 2024 election and becoming an executive producer full-time on the program, I found myself curious what the response would be from longtime fans.
During his first run as host of the Comedy Central news program (1999-2015) Stewart paved a new kind of infotainment that inarguably shaped how a segment of the population consumed news. In his wake, he was far from the only one. When Stewart got the Mark Twain Prize in 2022, former “Daily Show” correspondent Bee cracked, “Satire solves the world’s problems. Don’t believe me? Just look at all the satirical shows we now have and how amazing the world is doing!”
Does that world still need Jon Stewart? Perhaps more pressing: Is...

Is television dying? It’s a claim Jon Stewart pushed back on during his return to Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show.” Taking pre-show questions from the audience, Stewart was confronted with one viewer who asked about TV in the age of social media.
“What do you think about young people getting all of their information and entertainment from social media?” the audience member asked before outright claiming: “TV is dying!”
“Is that true?” Stewart answered back. “You still watch TV but you just watch it on your computer [or phone]. You understand that’s still TV? You’re just watching it on a different delivery service.”
“It’s like, heroin is heroin whether you snort it or shoot it,” Stewart continued. “It’s still an opiate for the masses as is television, you’re just getting it in smaller bites. But it’s still TV. We make it.”

Jon Stewart returned to “The Daily Show” on Monday night for the first time since 2015 with a simple question: “Now where was I?”
The Emmy Award-winning host, whose tenure as “The Daily Show” host dates back a quarter-century, quickly got back into the swing of things by dunking on the 2024 presidential election and the way conservatives have responded to the much-publicized relationship between Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce. But first, Stewart addressed his decision to come back to Comedy Central for “The Daily Show,” which he’ll host weekly on Mondays through November.
“Why am I back? You may be asking yourself and that’s a very reasonable question. I have committed a lot of crimes from what I understand talk show hosts are granted immunity. It doesn’t make a lot of sense but take it up with the founders,” Stewart joked. He then indirectly referenced his previous gig...

Some 8 1/2 years after leaving his iconic host seat on “The Daily Show,” Jon Stewart returns to the Comedy Central staple tonight at 11 p.m. Et/Pt and will remain as host each Monday thereafter through the 2024 Election Cycle. His first guest be Zanny Minton Beddoes, editor-in-chief of The Economist. The debut episode will be simulcast on CMT, Logo, MTV, MTV2, Paramount Network, Pop and TV Land. The every-Monday hosting stint follows in the recent tradition of Rachel Maddow’s similar set-up at MSNBC.

Ahead of his return as host of Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show,” Jon Stewart stopped by “CBS Mornings” to explain why it was finally time to return to his old job. Stewart hosted the network’s flagship news show from 1999 to 2015. He’ll now be hosting only Monday episodes throughout the 2024 election cycle. Stewart said he needed a platform to speak about the upcoming election, which he no longer had after Apple canceled his talk show last year.

Jon Stewart is heading back to “The Daily Show.”
More than 25 years after starting on the Emmy Award-winning late-night show and nearly nine years after his exit, Stewart will host Monday episodes of “The Daily Show” through the 2024 presidential election. The Emmy Award-winning host will also serve as an executive producer on “The Daily Show” during this run.

The night is always darkest before the dawn (or so they say), and just when it seemed like all hope was lost ... a hero made his dramatic, last-minute return. Okay, today's news isn't quite on the level of Christian Bale's Batman coming out of self-imposed retirement in "The Dark Knight Rises" or a bearded Cap stepping out of the shadows in "Avengers: Infinity War," but we'll take what we can at this point. Jon Stewart, everyone's favorite talk show host and political humorist, is making his grand -- and rather unexpected -- return to hosting duties on "The Daily Show" just in time for the upcoming American presidential election.
The news was announced by President/CEO of Showtime/MTV Entertainment Studios Chris McCarthy (via The Hollywood Reporter), though with a wrinkle. Rather than returning full-time, Stewart will merely host one episode a week on Mondays while the network cycles...

After an eight-year hiatus, Jon Stewart is set to make a surprising comeback to The Daily Show, where he originally began 25 years ago. Stewart will be hosting the Comedy Central late-night show one night a week throughout the election cycle, and his return follows his impactful tenure that revolutionized late-night TV, fostering talents like Stephen Colbert, John Oliver, Samantha Bee, and Steve Carell. Many have speculated about Jon Stewart’s return to The Daily Show, especially after Apple TV+ canceled his series The Problem with Jon Stewart last year. Stewart will take the show’s prime slot on Monday nights to catch up on weekend news. Other weeknights will feature correspondents like Desi Lydic, Michael Kosta, Ronny Chieng, and Jordan Klepper. Stewart returns on February 12, producing episodes through 2025, reuniting with showrunner Jen Flanz. His return follows clashes with Apple TV+ over his canceled series, allowing him to reclaim The Daily Show.

Comedy Central is reaching back to the past to keep its long-running “The Daily Show” going in the present.
After scuttling a months-long search for a new host, the Paramount Global network said it has enlisted Jon Stewart, who presided over the late-night mainstay’s most popular era, to serve as its host on Monday nights throughout the 2024 election cycle and to run the program. He is expected to play an oversight role at “Daily” that could extend through 2025, and will start his on-air duties February 12. Various “Daily Show” correspondents will host the program Tuesday through Thursday nights, and Jen Flanz, the current executive producer, will continue her duties on the show.

Jon Stewart is returning as the host and executive producer of Comedy Central’s “Daily Show.” Before you get too excited, the assignment is part-time, and the plan is for him to stay on as host through the November 2024 presidential election cycle, and EP at least through 2025.
Stewart will host the program only on Mondays, but executive produce every episode. The other evenings will be hosted by a rotating panel of the show’s “All-Star Correspondents.” If you’re wondering why Stewart is taking the Monday slot, it’s because that’s traditionally the most-watched “Daily Show” episode of the week, and acts as catch up for all the news that’s gone on over the weekend.
Although “The Daily Show” began in 1996 with Craig Kilborn as its host, the show rose in the public consciousness during Stewart’s time hosting from 1999 to 2015. Under Kilborn, the show was mostly irreverent and focused on pop culture.

The cast of “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” has a bone to pick with the Emmys: They want an award.
Charlie Day, Glenn Howerton, Rob McElhenney, Kaitlin Olson and Danny DeVito took the stage Monday night to present the award for Outstanding Talk Series.

“Have you guys been doing this every single year without us?” Day then asked.
“They do. They get dressed up. They give each other awards,” McElhenney said. “And 16 seasons we’ve never even presented before.”

The Daily Show with Trevor Noah was somewhat of a surprise winner for the main late-night Emmy.
But it was made slightly easier after Last Week Tonight with John Oliver was moved out of the Outstanding Talk Series category (he won Scripted Variety Series).
Noah, who left The Daily Show more than a year ago, accepted the award.
He thanked a litany of his former team, as well as Jon Stewart, who was also in the category with The Problem with Jon Stewart, for bringing him to The Daily Show, as well as showrunner Jen Flanz, “this woman rode with me through the trenches”.
“I told you we’d beat John Oliver if he wasn’t in our category. We did it, we got rid of John Oliver. This story has been so long, so crazy, so wonderful. I want to start by thanking the crazy Africans who followed me to this country,...

Saturday Night Live and Last Week Tonight With John Oliver each came into Monday’s Emmy Awards on a long winning streak. Thanks to being thrown into a new category together, at least one of those streaks was bound to end.
SNL’s six-year streak fell as Last Week Tonight took home the Emmy in the newly created category of scripted variety series. The category came into being this year thanks to a rule change that grouped Last Week Tonight with sketch comedy shows SNL and A Black Lady Sketch Show. The change moved Last Week Tonight out of the talk show category it has dominated in recent years as the Television Academy decided it is materially different than programs like Comedy Central’s The Daily Show, CBS’ Late Show With Stephen Colbert and NBC’s Late Night With Seth Meyers.

Can experience generating viral moments on late night TV translate to a political campaign? The Biden-Harris reelection effort is betting that it can.
President Biden’s 2024 campaign operation has hired late night TV veteran Andy Crystal as its research director, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
Crystal was most recently lead research producer on the Apple TV+ series The Problem with Jon Stewart, and before that worked as a senior news producer on the Netflix series Patriot Act with Hasan Minhaj.
Crystal is expected to combine the traditional campaign research approach with creative tactics like viral videos and investigative reporting meant to cut through the clutter of social platforms, per campaign officials.
It’s a skillset that Jim Margolis, the executive producer and showrunner of Patriot Act, believes will translate well.
“Andy’s vision, vast intellect and passion for finding and reporting important stories drove our most memorable episodes,” Margolis says.

January 11, 1999, 25 years ago to the day, was Jon Stewart’s first night hosting The Daily Show.
The comedian took over from Craig Kilborn, who had hosted the Comedy Central show from July 21, 1996. Stewart’s first guest was Michael J. Fox, promoting Spin City.
The Daily Show with Jon Stewart went on to win the Emmy for Outstanding Variety Series for ten consecutive years between 2003 and 2012, before losing to The Colbert Report, a show that he exec produced, for a couple of years, and then coming back to win in 2015 in his final season.
It’s a run that Last Week Tonight with John Oliver looked like it might replicate with seven wins in the category – then known as Outstanding Variety Talk Series – starting in 2016.
However, Oliver is now competing on Monday night at the primetime Emmys in a new category, Outstanding Scripted Variety Series, up against Saturday Night Live and A Black Lady Sketch Show,...

John Oliver locked in on an unexpected target during the latest episode of “Last Week Tonight”: Apple TV+.
Sunday’s episode of HBO’s late night series revolved around the working conditions of dollar stores. As Oliver covered, these stores are often understaffed to the point of only having one or two employees working at a time – and the employees that do work are underpaid and not given adequate support. One employee detailed how, after an armed robbery of her store, her district manager’s second question was about how soon the employee could reopen the store.
“That is ridiculous. An armed robbery is a traumatic event that people need time to recover from,” Oliver said. “It’s not something you can just ignore like a spam call or a broken lightbulb or any show on Apple TV.”
“Did you know that Octavia Spencer starred as a true crime...

Stephen Colbert Says ‘Apple Has Canceled Jon Stewart Again’ After Telling Chinese Labor Joke (Video)
Stephen Colbert poked fun at his former “Daily Show” bud and late night peer Jon Stewart on Wednesday night, cracking a joke about the recent cancellation of the comedian’s Apple TV+ show.
During the opening monologue for “The Late Show,” Colbert discussed President Joe Biden’s meeting on Wednesday with Chinese President Xi Jinping. According to the New York Times, China’s economy has been struggling in part due to “anemic consumer spending and high youth unemployment.”
“It’s gotten so bad that second graders can’t get a job at the iPhone factory,” Colbert quipped. “And I’m being told that in response to that joke, Apple has canceled Jon Stewart again.”
In October, “The Problem with Jon Stewart” was canceled after two seasons. The shuttering reportedly came down to creative differences that had to do with the series’ coverage of artificial intelligence and China. The controversial topics...

A group of House lawmakers want to know: Was China the reason for Jon Stewart’s exit from Apple TV+?
Stewart’s show, The Problem with Jon Stewart, effectively ended last month when Stewart and his team parted ways amid “creative differences.” Sources told The Hollywood Reporter at the time that “there had been tension between Apple and Stewart ahead of the show’s third season return over topics featured on The Problem.” Among the topics was issues related to China and artificial intelligence.
Now, the House Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party has sent a letter to Apple and its CEO Tim Cook citing the THR story, and asking whether the tech giant’s long relationship with China was behind the move.
“If these reports are accurate, it potentially speaks to broader concerns about indirect Chinese Communist Party (Ccp) influence over the creative expression of American artists and companies on Ccp-related topics,...

Reps heading a special committee of the U.S. House of Representatives are questioning Apple CEO Tim Cook about whether the tech giant’s decision to cancel Jon Stewart’s Apple TV+ talk show was because the host may have been planning an upcoming episode about China.
“While companies have the right to determine what content is appropriate for their streaming service, the coercive tactics of a foreign power should not be directly or indirectly influencing these determinations,” the leaders of the House of Representatives’ Select Committee on Competition with the Chinese Communist Party (Ccp) wrote in the letter to Cook, released Wednesday.

Staff was told Thursday ahead of the start production on its third season.

The weekly talk series “The Problem With Jon Stewart” is not getting a third season at Apple TV+, Variety has confirmed.

Following its surprise 2022 Emmy win for Best Variety Series Directing, “A Black Lady Sketch Show” is out of the running for the same prize this year, leaving an opportunity for “Saturday Night Live” to bounce back and achieve its 12th victory in the category. It does, however, face several formidable challengers, including “The Problem with Jon Stewart,” the host of which once starred on “The Daily Show,” which notably halted a “Saturday Night Live” success streak in 2015.
“Saturday Night Live” is the only former winner in this directing lineup, while “The Problem with Jon Stewart” stands as the only new nominee. The three other returning contenders are “Jimmy Kimmel Live!,” “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver,” and “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” which have now amassed a collective total of 18 mentions in this category.

The Television Academy has some good news for talk shows this year: You don’t have to compete with “Last Week Tonight With John Oliver” at the Emmys anymore.
And then there’s the bad news: You have no way to take advantage of Oliver’s absence.
In a way, the good news/bad news juxtaposition makes the Outstanding Talk Series category emblematic of the Emmys as a whole this year, with every interesting twist being overshadowed by the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. They’ve delayed shows, led to others being taken off the air and prevented writers and actors from doing promotion or campaigning to support their nominated programs.

If you’re going to sit down for an interview with Jon Stewart, you best be ready to get properly pressed on the subjects you’re talking about. The talk show host doesn’t shy away from challenging subjects on guests’ views, as plenty of politicians have learned.
Over the last year, Stewart sat down with several officials across multiple states for his Apple TV+ series “The Problem With Jon Stewart,” digging in on issues like gun violence and election misinformation. Sometimes, it gets heated.
Stewart has never been shy about his own opinions, so we rounded up several top moments from the show in which he pushed back (in no particular order).
1. Arizona Attorney General
In October 2022, Stewart sat down with Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich and, despite Stewart’s best efforts, Brnovich would not admit that Donald Trump’s lies about the 2020 election being stolen were just that: lies.
