Writer/director Jesse V. Johnson opens his latest film, Boudica, on an impressive note. Roman soldiers march through a dark, fog-enshrouded, forest. It’s creepy and ominous as if something unseen is waiting for them. And there is, a group of Druids who kneel, chanting in a clearing. The warrior goddess they hoped to summon doesn’t save them and the legion graphically slaughters them.
Meanwhile, in Britania’s Icini Province, Prasutagus rules alongside his queen, Boudica. Despite having to deal with the Roman occupiers life is good for them and their daughters Bre (Lilibet Butanaseva) and Aife (Litiana Butanaseva; On the Morning You Wake (to the End of the World), The Bay of Silence, The Wheel of Time, Kiddyzuzaa).

Indie production shop The Exchange, also known as Bos Entertainment, is suing Wonderfilm for breach of contract related to their partnership on Harvey Keitel and Tyrese Gibson-starrer Hard Matter, which appears to be stuck in limbo for failure to pay a visual effects vendor.
The lawsuit filed on Tuesday in California federal court arrives in the wake of an investor in the movie — which was allegedly led to believe it was financing a Mel Gibson-led film only for the project to never get finished due to a lack of funds — accusing Wonderfilm of swindling it out of more than $5 million. The Exchange, in turn, is looking to distance itself from the company and Wonderfilm principals Bret Saxon and Jeff Bowler. It claims that it had no part in the alleged scheme and that it was defrauded since Wonderfilm failed to secure insurance for the movie.

Sharpen your sword and show us your war face because Saban Films‘s Boudica: Queen of War trailer is soaking the soil with blood as battle cries echo throughout the plains. In Boudica: Queen of War, Olga Kurylenko plays a mother whose life is stolen when high-ranking members of the Roman Empire storm her lands, slay her family, and brand her a nobody in the eyes of the aristocracy. Unfortunately for the Roman Empire, the people still see Kurylenko’s character as their queen and would follow her onto any battlefield without question. Given the name Boudica by her loyal subjects, the would-be queen inspires her followers to take up arms in the name of freedom from the Roman Empire. What follows is a bloodbath of epic proportions as rage leads to a plan to topple the corrupt Romans and their overlords.

Indie production shop Wonderfilm has been sued for fraud and breach of contract in a lawsuit accusing the company and its directors of swindling an investor — which was allegedly led to believe it was financing a Mel Gibson-led film only for the project to never get finished due to a lack of funds — out of more than $5 million.
Investor Gridiron Productions alleges fraud in a lawsuit claiming Wonderfilm principals Bret Saxon and Jeff Bowler changed the terms of contracts to pay themselves exorbitant salaries on top of exaggerating the budget for the movie, with the goal of making it for less and pocketing the difference.
The lawsuit filed on Sept. 12 in California federal court mirrors claims made in other legal actions against Saxon. According to a review of court records by The Hollywood Reporter, he was named in 2011 in a series of complaints accusing him of operating a “ponzi scheme,...

It’s finally here, unless there’s something stashed away and kept secret, Assassin is the last film featuring Bruce Willis. Given the quality or lack thereof, of most of his later career output it seemed almost pointless to hope that he would go out on a high note, working with Jesse V. Johnson on White Elephant was probably his last chance of that. But could we at least hope that his last on-screen appearance wouldn’t be another embarrassment?

"You're in the UK now - protocol is everything." Lionsgate has revealed the action-packed official trailer for an international crime thriller titled One Ranger, the latest from action filmmaker Jesse V. Johnson. This one is set to open in May, yet another of these action dime-a-dozen films they're churning out left and right. The film follows a Texas Ranger as he is recruited by British Intelligence to track down a dangerous terrorist and stop him from attacking London. He must help them bring the outlaw to justice — dead or alive. The film stars John Malkovich as one of the Brits, with Thomas Jane as the Texas Ranger, plus Dominique Tipper, Dean Jagger, Jess Liaudin, Rachel Wilde, Nick Moran, and Patrick Bergin. Oh damn this looks totally nuts, in good ways & bad, especially with that mustache Thomas Jane has and his thick accent. // Continue Reading ›...

Every season, the Christmas episode of "Saturday Night Live" packs the late night sketch comedy series with holiday-themed laughs. Typically, there are some big guest stars who pop up just for the hell of it, but due to a big announcement just hours before the episode aired, the show hosted by "Elvis" star Austin Butler became somewhat of a bittersweet affair. "SNL" announced that Cecily Strong would be leaving the series after 11 seasons, and this episode marking the halfway point of the 48th season would be her last.
As expected, "SNL" allowed Cecily Strong to say goodbye to the sketch comedy series that launched her career, including a proper heartfelt sendoff at the end. Unfortunately, the rest of the episode was rather uneventful and uneven, especially for a Christmas episode. Maybe the cast and crew were a little off their game due to the anticipation of Cecily Strong leaving the show.

Martin Lawrence is known for his comedic roles, but in Mindcage he plays it straight as Detective Jake Doyle who along with his partner Mary Kelly is tracking down a serial killer whose handiwork we see in the opening scene, a woman’s body turned into a statue in a church.
The killing looks like it was inspired by the work of a previous serial killer Arnaud Lefeure, better known as The Artist. Jake put him away years ago though and he’s scheduled to be executed in two weeks. After another victim is found, transformed into an angel, and attached to a locomotive the decision is made to try to get help from Lefeure.

It’s the most wonderful time of the year! And with its list of new releases for December 2022, Hulu is planning accordingly.
Compared to its rival streaming services like Netflix, Prime Video, and HBO Max, Hulu is a bit more holiday forward in the final month of 2022. Sure, all the streaming services are bringing some Christmas content to the table, but Hulu is the only one to plant its flag in a special called It’s a Wonderful Binge. This comedic take on a psychedelic Purge-like Christmas is set to premiere on Dec. 8.
Elsewhere on Hulu this month, subscribers can look forward to the release of FX’s Kindred (Dec. 13). Based on a thrilling novel of the same name, this series follows a woman being violently yanked back and forth in time. In what’s increasingly become a tradition, Canadian comedy Letterkenny will premiere a new season the day after Christmas.

The Yule log is likely roaring on the fireplace of your TV screen — the holidays are upon us. Hulu is going all-in on their Christmas content with a few holiday features, including the debut of their original movie “It’s a Wonderful Binge.” But if you’re looking for a new television series to keep you busy till Christmas it’s all about the adaptation of Octavia Butler’s “Kindred,” the first television translation of any of Butler’s acclaimed literary works, coming to FX on Hulu this month.
Based on Butler’s 1979 novel, “Kindred” focuses on Dana James, a young Black aspiring writer living in Los Angeles with her husband Kevin Franklin. While in the process of moving, Dana abruptly finds herself tossed between the modern day and 1815 Maryland during the Antebellum period of the South. During her journeys to the past, she struggles to survive while trapped at...

Jesse V Johnson, the director of the Bruce Willis starrer action-thriller ‘White Elephant’, is a die-hard fan of Samurai films. He recently shared what fascinated him about the Samurai films of the 1950s.
Elaborating on the same, the director said: “As a young man, I was fascinated by the 1950’s Samurai films. They were very interesting to me as they not only embraced and were heavily influenced by Westerns and detective films that would be showing in post-war 1950s Japan.”
Giving a brief peek into the history behind such films, he added, “Films were being played by the US occupying force for US troops stationed there, but because they also have interwoven codes of warrior conduct and were statements on loyalty and honour, perspectives that were less apparent in American Cinema at the time.”
The director also mentioned how ‘White Elephant’ emanates from the genre of his liking and falls in the same category.

Has the theme tune for this year’s Conservative Party conference been picked yet? Because it’s hard to see how they could do better than our original doomsday prophet: the moon-faced grinch Nick Cave and his discordant orchestra of deliverance.
This is the age of the dog-house-fire meme, after all. There’s a cost of living crisis, an energy crisis, a political crisis, and a total lack of urgency from our chillaxing, trainer-wearing leaders. And nobody finds comfort in chaos quite like Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. At his best, Cave’s back catalogue is a cosmic blend of the funereal and the enraptured – both elegy and ecstasy. For this two-hour performance at All Points East festival in east London’s Victoria Park, Cave has brought along the gospel choir that now accompanies so many of his live performances.
He kicks the air to start a set of back-to-back bangers.

The Princess opens with the title character waking up groggy to find herself locked in a tower with only vague memories of how she got there. Within minutes she has to deal with a pair of soldiers with ill intent, both of whom she quite violently dispatches with moves that include a lethal kick and a hairpin through the eye.
As that probably told you, The Princess tosses all notions of historical accuracy, or any kind of accuracy really right out the window. Director Le-Van Kiet takes Ben Lustig (The Thirst) and Jake Thornton’s script and runs with it. After his last two films, he knew he needed to repeat the success of his last hit, the female-fronted action film Furie.

Jesse V. Johnson may well be the best director of action films working today. And his latest film, White Elephant may be Bruce Willis’s best chance to add another memorable to his list of credits. Or at least one that’s memorable for the right reasons.
Gabriel Tancredi is an enforcer working for Arnold (Bruce Willis). They have Carlos deal with a rival who won’t negotiate. He handles the matter, but a pair of cops, Vanessa and her partner see him making his escape. Arnold gives Gabriel and Carlos forty-eight hours to take care of that problem. And they get half the job done quickly and easily. But finishing it off may be more work than they expected.

"Just get rid of them both, whatever the cost." Another day, another bad Bruce Willis action movie. There's an official trailer available now for White Elephant, the latest from the mindless action filmmaker Jesse V. Johnson. When an assassination attempt goes wrong, an ex-marine-turned-mob enforcer is forced to set things right or face the wrath of his ruthless mob boss. If that sounds like nearly every other boring action film recently, it's because it is exactly that, and they're not doing much different besides just shaking the bottle each time. Bruce Willis & Michael Rooker star, along with Michael Rose, Olga Kurylenko, Vadhir Derbez, and John Malkovich. This looks so bland and awful, please don't waste any of your time on this. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Jesse V. Johnson's White Elephant, direct from YouTube: When an assassination attempt is witnessed by two cops, an ex-marine ...

Exclusive: Broken English has optioned an original screenplay by Erick Galindo and Patty Rodriguez for the holiday ensemble film A Christmas to Remember.
The film tells the story of Rose Klug, who has turned White Elephant into a war of attrition, one where bringing the best or most creative gift is more important than Christmas itself. The battles have become legendary among locals on the powdery slopes of Big Bear where the former hedge fund manager has called home for decades (she called it quits to manage a growing ulcer problem).
Rose feels like she’s from a different era: she drinks whiskey straight, she doesn’t say much yet commands attention, and she never takes two steps when one will do. Her family gift exchange is the one time of year she allows herself to go wild. But this Christmas, something threatens to upstage Rose’s epic game of...

On April 29, Bruce Willis’ storied filmography adds another credit with the release of “Fortress: Sniper’s Eye.”
The action-thriller starring Willis, Jesse Metcalfe and Chad Michael Murray is a sequel to 2021’s “Fortress” and is set to be released in select theaters, as well as on digital platforms and VOD. It’s just one of about 10 tough-guy titles still outstanding as Willis’ acting career comes to a close.
The actor’s family announced Wednesday that the superstar will step away from acting after being recently diagnosed with aphasia, a language disorder caused by brain damage the affects a person’s ability to communicate. Willis’ wife Emma Heming Willis and their daughters Mabel and Evelyn, along with his ex-wife Demi Moore and their daughters Rumer, Scout and Tallulah revealed the diagnosis in a statement posted to social media. After “much consideration,” they wrote, Willis made the decision to step away from “the...

The family of Bruce Willis announced Wednesday that the actor is stepping away from acting after being diagnosed with the cognitive disorder aphasia, but new reporting suggests that Willis’ health decline was affecting his work on the set of recent films.
In January of 2020 on the set of the film “Hard Kill,” actress Lala Kent told the Los Angeles Times that Willis twice missed his cue to fire a gun. The actress said she asked the film’s director, Matt Eskandari, to remind Willis to say his line before firing the gun, but on two takes Willis fired the gun before delivering the line, taking the actress by surprise. “Because my back was to him, I wasn’t aware of what was happening behind me. But the first time, it was like, ‘No big deal, let’s reset,’” she said.

Several of Bruce Willis’ recent directors spoke to the Los Angeles Times about the concerns they felt while working with the actor in the years leading up to Wednesday’s announcement that Willis has aphasia and is stepping away from his acting career. Aphasia is a language disorder caused by brain damage that affects a person’s ability to communicate. The directors witnessed the effects of Willis losing his mental acuity, which often resulted in the actor being unable to remember his dialogue. Mike Burns, who directed Willis in “Out of Death,” said he was asked to reduce the actor’s speaking parts in his film.
“It looks like we need to knock down Bruce’s page count by about five pages,” Burns wrote in a June 2020 email, obtained by the Times, to his film’s screenwriter. “We also need to abbreviate his dialogue a bit so that there are no monologues,...

Three singers huddle and lean forward, their long, sparkly garments dangling before them as they chant in staccato unison: “Hand-of-God! Hand-of-God! Hand-of-God!” Warren Ellis, meanwhile, sits stationary except for his hands, which run windmills around his Gandalf beard as he closes his eyes tight and chants along with them, completely entranced. All the while, Nick Cave — the rangy leader of this ad-hoc religious sect — leaps from one side of the stage to the other. He crouches, poses in crucifixion stances, and celebrates the might and mysteries of faith like a man possessed.

Wonderfilm’s Jeff Bowler and Bret Saxon are producing alongside Latavius Powell and Justin Price of Powell and Price Productions, with Richard Salvatore exec producing.

Polished in all the ways its predecessor was rough, “This Much I Know to Be True,” Andrew Dominik’s second film about Nick Cave, offers nothing close to the acute emotional experience of his previous effort — and that’s the best news of all. In 2016, the rocker and the “Assassination of Jesse James” filmmaker teamed on “One More Time with Feeling,” an ash-toned music doc that followed the singer as he grieved an incomprehensible personal loss, resulting in a roundabout portrait of raw nerves and confusion that remains a high watermark of the genre.
Unable to go on tour in early 2021 (guess the reason why), Cave re-teamed with Dominik to make big screen magic, setting up shop in an abandoned Bristol factory to record tracks from Cave’s most recent albums “Ghosteen,” with his band The Bad Seeds, and “Carnage,” with long-time collaborator Warren Ellis.
Elegant simplicity was the name of the game,...

Toronto director Andrew Chung says the Canadian entertainment industry has failed Asian Canadians like himself for decades by mostly erasing their representation on domestic TV sets.
But the industry-realigning success and controversy around Kim’s Convenience on Netflix has led Canadian TV programmers to finally greenlight more stories by and about Asian Canadians. That’s unlike Hollywood where the box office success of Crazy Rich Asians already had Asian Americans breaking through the U.S. industry’s bamboo ceiling far earlier.

Exclusive: In an unusual move, but one that speaks to fluidity in the distribution landscape and increasing demand for foreign-language series, LA-based film firm The Exchange is launching world sales (excluding Iran) at the upcoming Cannes virtual market on hit Iranian TV series The Frog.
The series follows Ramin, a man dissatisfied with a life of low-paying petty crime in Tehran, who determines with friends to rob an enormously wealthy former classmate. However, the theft goes fatally awry and Ramin finds himself entangled in a dangerous web of deceit involving the police, local gangsters, and greedy family members.
It’s rare for TV series to be launched at film markets. But the very concept of a market has been fraying in recent years, especially in the Covid era. Sales increasingly take place across the year and traditional film companies are increasingly working in TV.
