William S. Burroughs: A Man Within provides a rare and intimate look at one of the most influential artists of our time. Burroughs was called the “godfather of the beat generation.” His controversial and daring works in reference to drug use and queer experience were among the first of their kind. This documentary features interviews with his closest friends and colleagues: Patti Smith, Allen Ginsburg and Norman Mailer, among others. The film shows how Burroughs’ influence can be felt throughout many artistic genres; he inspired countless musicians, visual artists and filmmakers like David Bowie, Iggy Pop, Sonic Youth, U2, Andy Warhol, Blondie, Nirvana, Gus Van Sant, and John Waters. Norman Mailer has said of Burroughs: “[He is] the only American writer who may conceivably be possessed by genius.”
Personal tragedy and struggle served as inspiration for much of Burroughs’ work, most notably that he accidentally shot his wife in the head...

Yony Leyser - Interview
Watching a documentary on William S. Burroughs is kind of like opening your mind up like a flower waiting for a bumblebee to come and pollenate it. You know that in order to carry on, you need to have someone assist you in continuing down the path of evolving as a species. Burroughs was that bee. He was slight, unassuming, but wielded such a power as to be completely and totally dangerous.
I hadn’t ever come into contact with his work until having this documentary, crafted together by director Yony Leyser, put in front of me to see exactly what kind man he was. Forget about what the media has built up around the perceived mystique of the man,...

Last week at the May Fair Hotel in central London I sat down with documentary filmmaker Yony Leyser to discuss his excellent new feature William S. Burroughs: A Man Within.
My own opinion of the American writer isn’t a comfortable one and Leyer’s movie didn’t change my mind on Burrough’s work or his character, but it did offer a fresh glimpse of the man and his extremely complex personality. Indeed, the film’s subtitle – A Man Within – highlights the drive of the documentary.
It is well made film on an often lurid and strange individual. I had to share my interview time with a journalist from The Independent, and it would have been great to chat with Leyser more in depth about Burroughs and his movie. Alas, it was not to be.
As my friend, the writer Ben Loory told me, Burroughs is a writer who...

Killer, drug fiend, gun lover, revolutionary writer. William S. Burroughs (1914 – 1997) remains one of the most notorious and influential artists of the 20th century, certainly in Us literature.
Musicians flocked around him as acolytes and his book, Naked Lunch, was dragged through the courts on obscenity charges. Burroughs was the forerunner of the Beat generation and led the creative charge, inspiring others to follow suit.
But what about real man; the man within, as the movie’s subtitle promises to expose? When the mask of the artist has been lifted what do we see?
Yony Leyser’s feature length documentary might be littered with people talking bollocks giving it a ‘film memorial’ type effect, but we do get glimpses of Burrough’s regrets, sadness and fleeting moments of profound insights via home video footage, interviews and readings of his work.
Burroughs is the definition of the outsider artist. He was married...

If there is ever a literary figure that has needed a documentary, it’s one William S. Burroughs, the author of such films as Naked Lunch, which later joined the Criterion Collection as an adaptation directed by David Cronenberg.
Well, thanks to Oscilloscope Laboratories, we will get a chance to see the man’s life on the big screen.
According to indieWire, the distributor has picked up the North American rights to release Yony Leyser’s documentary, William S. Burroughs: A Man Within, which premiered at this year’s Slamdance Film Festival.
The film will hit theaters this fall, which will be followed by a DVD release, along with a broadcast television release on PBS’ Independent Lens series in late 2010/early 2011. It features interviews ranging from John Waters to Iggy Pop, with the likes of Gus Van Sandt, Patti Smith, and the aforementioned Cronenberg, and is narrated by Peter Weller.

Oscilloscope Laboratories, the film company run by Beastie Boy Adam Yauch, has picked up William S. Burroughs: A Man Within, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The documentary on the late Beat author is now set for a theatrical release this fall. Judging by the trailer, which you can check out below, this movie looks pretty cool. You’ve got everyone from John Waters to David Cronenberg raving about Burroughs’ influence — or, in Iggy Pop’s case, babbling some wordless but heartfelt gibberish in an attempt to do the same. (Maybe that’s just how Iggy talks these days, who knows.

Some of the best actors, filmmakers and writers of the century assemble in William S. Burroughs: A Man Within, the first (and only) posthumous documentary about this legendary figure. an upcoming feature-length independent documentary on the writer directed by Chicago Director Yony Leyser.
