Stunning Achievement
mtk0014 July 2021
On the heels of a brilliant penultimate episode, we got a breathtaking finale to one of tv's little known gems.

Ray deals with the emotional fallout of the previous episode in the way he feels is best, but he's made enough enemies along the way that things take an "inconvenient" turn. The result being that we end up being treated to an incredible, pulse-pounding action sequence that reinforces just how competent Ray is in this illicit line of work.

The show's closing moments leave us with a note of slight ambiguity, but knowing what we know about Ray, there's really only one potential outcome.

Scott Ryan handled the 3 seasons of this show with such a deft touch. This could've easily become a hyper-violent show that lost the plot along the way (looking at you Sons of Anarchy), but the emotional state of our protagonist is just too carefully considered by our star/creator to let that happen.

The humour and "slice of life" moments that sucked me into the show in season 1 continued to exist all the way to the end even as the tone got darker, and these moments are ultimately what make the show most memorable and different from the glut of other "anti-hero" dramas that pervade our premium cable/streaming offerings.

I'm fully in the bag for whatever Scott Ryan does next - hopefully FX realizes what they had with this show and give him a generous offer to continue working together.

I will be watching for whatever Scott Ryan touches next. The whole series was nothing short of a breathtaking run between slice-of-life, characters, quiet, suspension and violence. I absolutley loved. Sad to see the series go but happy that it ended on such a high note.

Bravo

Warning: Spoilers
Mr. Inbetween walks a tightrope. If they had done everything wrong, it would still be an entertaining "tough guy with skills" show. Instead, the cost of violence was never downplayed, the life of crime never glorified.

The final season opens with characters viewers do not know. A family is gathered around the pool in the backyard. Mothers play with the children, as the Patriarch holds forth with his sons about the approaching job. Soon, a foolish miscalculation leaves the father and his sons dead at the hands of Ray, Dave, and Gary. We never return to that backyard, yet the widows and fatherless children hover just off-screen. Violence has consequences.

As captivating as the action is, there is so much more going on. The casting of key women is one of the reasons the show is so successful. Chika Yasumura, as Ray's daughter, Brittany, is perfect in a role that demands nuance. She brings a quiet grace and normalcy to a girl growing up vaguely aware of her father's criminality.

Ally, played by Brooke Satchwell, shows Ray the life he could have had. In her final appearance, she is pregnant and contented. And, while only present in two episodes, Emily Barclay makes a powerful and lasting impression as Zoe, the shooting star. Barclay is so captivating that I kept imagining Zoe's final off screen minutes. The growing realization that the hospital was not the destination. The brief terror and sudden death. A grave unworthy to hold her.

Zoe's death forces Ray to the crossroads. A profound loss, yet only the latest and not the last. From Ally to his dog, Boof, to his brother Bruce, Ray's criminal world is marked by loss. The life of crime is never sugar-coated, the consequences never shrugged off. Ray allows himself a brief look at Zoe's picture, Scott Ryan once again conveying so much in his subtle, captivating performance.

The mercy Ray shows Freddy is returned in a close that brings the series full circle. "Run." Ray will survive the darkness and wilderness, most likely. What lies ahead is uncertain. Yet Ray has not lost all. Britany lives. Ray has a lot to live for. Is there hope for the magician of violence and survival? It is a testament to achievement of writer and actor Scott Ryan that viewers are fully invested in Ray. Ryan, along with a stellar cast and director, Nash Edgerton, has created an immensely successful series that lingers long after the final credits roll. Bravo.

Just One More

Wow, I just smashed through all three seasons of Mr Inbetween in three days flat. It's that good. I couldn't help myself.

It was like reading a brilliant book and saying to yourself, just one more chapter. You really have to see it to believe it.

The star. The acting. The writing. The director. The episodes. Everything and everyone incredible. 10/10.

Perfect Ending To A Perfect Series
adrianbarron14 July 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I fondly remember just before this show first aired and I was interested by what I had seen from the ads, despite the familiar sounding premise.

I remember being immediately hooked by the first episode, and that grip was kept on me all the way through.

This final episode is nothing short of breathtaking, and a testament to what a monstrous combo Scott Ryan and Nash Edgerton make. I can't remember the last time I saw a writer and director team up that just felt so natural. Ryan's performance can't got without notice either. How the man has never acted professionally before this or The Magician is mind blowing. His performance is as natural as it gets.

I was worried this final season, or at least the final episode, would falter in comparison to the previous two, as many great shows have fallen victim to that. Alas, that is not the case.

This final season was definitely the best made one, and the last episode contained every element of the show that made it one of my all time favorites, and managed to keep it all in a tight, concise 30 minutes without ever feeling forced or like they were trying too much. The show got so much across in so little time by not saying very much at all.

I was on the edge of my seat during the final minutes, pacing through my head at what was gonna happen. Whether the show would cheapen the ending, or if it would go out on a high note.

Luckily it was the latter.

That final shot encapsulates the character of Ray perfectly, and says so much. One of the best out of any finale and one of the best shows ever made.

One of THE most perfect finales of all time
Danoxmas17 July 2021
Delivered the chill folksy scenes, some incredible action, and at the very last second floored the gas in ways I never knew "Mr Inbetween" was capable of. Glad it's going out on top but it's sad to see such an amazing one of a kind show leave us while there's so many other programs that will go on and win awards and get more of an audience. Whatever, I feel so fortunate I discovered this and followed it up to the end. Scott Ryan delivered not only one of the best performances I've ever seen but one of the best written seasons of television I've ever seen, can't wait to see what this dude does next.

Sorry to see you go!

Excellent finale of an excellent series. I'm going to watch everything Scott Ryan does after this. Even if it's not as fantastic. He's set the bar high, that's for sure.

AND I'm absolutely going to see what dimmies are.

Incredible way to finish an amazing series
ConfusedCamelot14 July 2021
It's great to finally be emotionally invested in a TV series, and for it to have an appropriate ending.

The way this final episode completely summarised all of Ray's relationships, who he can trust, what his values are etc. In a 30 minute episode was truly breathtaking.

As a proud Aussie, I hope more than anything this show gains the notoriety it deserves, as this series truly proves Australia can produce quality TV series and movies.

Thank you so much Scott, Nash and the entire cast for this terrific journey. I hope you both continue to produce quality such as this.

Fantastic end to a fantastic series
npcollins-6875114 July 2021
This is a great send off to, in my opinion, one of the most underrated shows on television right now. Top notch writing, great storytelling, good twists, and a final scene that will make you crack a smile no matter what.

Kudos to Scott Ryan, and I can't wait to see what he comes up with next.

It's Why He's the Magician
gensbill15 July 2021
The character of "Ray" was introduced in the movie, The Magician, by writer and eponymous star Scott Ryan.

I stumbled on the series when season one came to FX. My only hope is that the title of this episode, I'm Not Leaving is a hidden message for the future because it is one of the best shows to ever be on TV.

If not, I will be checking for Ryan's next project, hoping for another series or a film -- The Magician was good as well.

The.director, Noah Edgerton (of the Edgertons) is also great as are all the main characters.

If this is it, I'm going to miss Ray and Brittany and the rest.

Are the Aussie creators mad to end this show?
andrew-tang15 July 2021
Is it true this show is ending? One of the best shows I've watched on TV recently. And they're ending it at Season 3?

Worst episode in entire series
jckaay2 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Not only this episode, but last few episodes in season 3 were done in such a hurry, like creators were told you have to end this series asap and that is what they did. Which is a shame, since the show was pretty good up until this point. I mean I expected Freddy will turn his back on Ray way back when they had falling out. But NOW?? And in just one episode?? Also Zoe character was good idea and all, but actors had zero chemistry, and the girl who played Zoe was ok but she had something annoying inside herself...something was just missing.

After the slow first season, the show started to be awesome, and then ending was not so good. I would have given the show 10, but I'll give it a 9, very low 9.

And this episode deserves a 0 but giving it a 1.

Not really keeping up to date with series endings
mrtspun14 July 2021
So, it's mostly the feeling in that final episode, this could be it...

And it is, at least for this peek into The Magician's world and I'm really looking forward to many more!

The Tarantino nods from the first season were still present, which made me smile (looking for the best tool, hammer? Nah. Cleaver? Cute. But what's THAT!?), the ending had my neighbours wondering why I'm laughing like a maniac..

It's been exceptional, everyone involved made something very special and unique, these past years!

I was always looking forward to the next part and it brightened my evenings!

I believe there's much more to tell and I hope there will be!

Absolutely outstanding! What a perfect ending. We smashed the entire three seasons in three nights. Wish it didn't end as just the best thing we've seen in so long. Well done.

Absolutely amazing
dcb-ronin15 July 2021
I'm mostly lurking and consuming reviews, bad, good, and in-between (;-))) to get a good indication of a movie or series.

But this show is amazing. What a masterpiece. Scott is the man and as another reviewer said, I'm going to watch everything this man produces.

This last episode captured it all and that end, the music, absolute perfection.

Scott Ryan, I've read that after this show you'll be taking a break and you completely deserve it after years of battling to get this off the ground.

But I'm going to be a bit selfish and hope you return soon for your next project. I'll preorder whatever you produce if I have to.

Unexpected Find!!
tlfletch14 July 2021
From the time I watched the 1st episode I have been hooked on this show. To then find out Mr Inbetween came from a 2005 movie Scott Ryan put together called "The Magician". I didn't want the show to end but glad he left the outcome open for interpretation.

Breaking Bad , Sopranos, Mr Inbetween - it's that good
andrewshuttler-8608615 July 2021
No spoilers here, I've written a review on this show before but just wanted to add my voice to the series end. A fitting finale to one of the great unseen shows, it really is as good as the aforementioned shows. It's such a shame there won't be a fourth season but if this really is the last we see of Ray Shoesmith it's a satisfying conclusion.

Addictive
Denno197219 September 2022
This was recommended to Me by a good mate, and although I trusted them I didn't ask for details bit after reading the blurb and seeing we had 30 minute episodes I wasn't sure. Then, I started to watch it and i was blown away. I hate to say it (as the execution is highly original) but the premise is a little bit sopranos (hit man has a home life with an ex wife, daughter, girlfriend, mates and all the rest of it) but the actual show is very aussie but with enough freshness to make it work. It is superbly written and acted. Its funny, tense, action packed, sad and the acting is superb. Overall, its a must watch. I'll be passing onthe favour and recommend this.l to anyone that will listen. Superb.

Proper Champ
danwest-1716316 July 2021
Being from the UK always find good Aussie drama very satisfying, this was so good I'd compare it breaking bad and at only 26 min an episode without all the fluff. I only stumbled across it after seeing a trailer from watching Dave on FX and thought 3 seasons why have I never seen or heard of this before. Well it's now my duty to spread the word and probably have to distribute USB sticks to enable the hilarious and at times tearfully sad and most importantly business like life of an atypical inner city enforcer...

From the writing to the acting its just gripping from start to finish. I just loved everything about it .As for Scott Ryan WOW what a talent he is . I can't wait to see what he does next .

Excellent series
jmw1110856 September 2022
Great series, good acting, good character development, good action, excellent balance.

Why did they end it? They could have gone on to do so much more with this series. I'm hoping the brains behind the series develops another similar series like this but also add in longer and more indepth story arcs. They have enough talent to do a "Breaking Bad" type series, or, they could continue this series with Ryan moving to another location and going to work for the Aussie Feds as an undercover agent. There are several different options for this calibre of talent.

Scott Ryan is an excellent actor and I hope to see more of him.
