Robert Firth played Alfie - a gay boxer who, along with his mother, ran the local watering hole. Firth chose to portray the gay character Alfie in a non-flamboyant way. For it's time, this was an unusual interpretation that was welcomed by the original pilot's director.
The original pilot for the series starred Robbie Benson, Lainie Kazan, Robert Firth, Toni Kalem and Alan Rosenberg. It was shot as a traditional situation comedy, in front of a live audience.
