The new starship class is called "Sombra," which is Spanish for shadow or shade. An appropriate allusion to the dark overtones of this episode.
We learn in this episode that Captain Pike's command code is 2-4-6-8-10.

Episode title is paraphrasing the popular saying coined by author J.R.R. Tolkien: "Not all who wander are lost". This phrase was part of a larger poem in his 1954 novel "The Fellowship of the Ring": "All that is gold does not glitter, Not all those who wander are lost; The old that is strong does not wither, Deep roots are not reached by the frost.From the ashes a fire shall be woken,
A light from the shadows shall spring;
Renewed shall be blade that was broken,
The crownless again shall be king." The novel was also made into several films, the most popular version by far being: The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001).
It is never explained how the Sombra class USS Peregrine differs from a Constitution class ship, such as the Enterprise, as the Sombra class is said to be made from the same components as a Constitution, arranged in the same configuration. The internal sets are all redressed from the series' standard Enterprise sets as well, making the two classes virtually identical.
