This is a new script based upon an unused Star Trek (1966) script by Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry.

The boy asks Spock what the speed of the Federation's subspace radio network is, to which Spock replies "roughly 52,000 times the speed of light". The boy comments that was super slow and why they needed to use booster relays to keep the signal from degrading. Over the next 100 years the Federation would make vast improvements in both subspace radio technology as well as warp drive. So much so that a new warp factor scale is devised in the early 24th century, on this scale the average maximum speed of Starfleet ships in the mid 23rd century is warp factor 6 (warp 8 on the old scale), which is roughly 390 times the speed of light. By the middle of the 24th century the average maximum speed of most Starfleet ships is warp factor 9 (warp 13 on the old scale), which is 1,516 times the speed of light. Mid 24th century subspace radio relays sent signals at a speed of 199,516 times the speed of light, equal to warp factor 9.9999. Warp drive gets advanced even more by the late 24th century with the launch of the Intrepid-class with a maximum velocity of warp factor 9.975, roughly 6,000 times the speed of light, and the Sovereign-class could even reach speeds of warp 9.99 for a very short period, roughly 7,900 times the speed of light, over six times the velocity of warp factor 9 and over 20 times the maximum velocity of the original Enterprise's warp 6.
