Saving us from Discovery
EntropyFashion19 May 2022
Now this is classic Star Trek complete with overly fast solutions but hey it's episode by episode and not an overreaching narrative. Both can be good but recent efforts have made us hungry for the old tried and true which is story and execution This is a no whisper no cry zone!

Who are we really?
bosporan19 May 2022
An episode focussed on Una with a fairly lightweight story, lots of introspection and too much monologue/narration. Still decent, but falls below the standards set in the first two instalments.

[7.4] Ghosts of Illyria
jimmyishere-3774819 May 2022
Star Trek classic infection episode. I kinda liked it but I feel I'm forcing myself to like. Perhaps I could be wrong.

Despite the flawless graphics and the good actors, writing is so lame; it just makes the plot a plain comedy show. The only thing that is missing from the show right now, are those recorded audience laughs and applaud. Beyond that I really liked Una. She's way better than Burnham the "whispering and crying leader".

If only they made it more serious, intense and realistic. It'd be great...

We have a cure for STD!

To seek out new life and new civilization, to boldly go where the 2 previous Kurtzman shows refuse to go. SNW is on the right track as meant to be for Gene Roddenberry's inspired creation. Book the 2 previous shows on the shelf to collect dust and branch off this creation.

Impressed with execution
bhk-2365719 May 2022
It was so good to finally see a mature take on some of the social commentary, instead of being on the nose and too emotional.

Number 1 showing calmness, rationale and even softer side by the end.

After discovery finally good to see that people act like people and not overact or overexpress sepcially on a startship.

Well written and executed, could feel the tension building and that too with only single shot fired.

Can't wait for more episodes.

....-Those jackets !!!
batmanforever-9324919 May 2022
This series is excellent and i really like those jackets which are reminding me about Star Trek Beyond, which was a pretty damn good movie ( even the ones who rejected the new era liked that movie ) and i like the connections with Scotty and the Dyson sphere episode and my only regret is they changed the aliens look ,because i would loved to see this series as being a direct sequel to Enterprise, but even so, Hemmer is a worthy succesor to Shran. I do hope this series will last more than five seasons because it is so good.

F@#%ING AWESOME EPISODE
Stone-Author19 May 2022
A number 1 episode! With lots of social commentary packed in without being in your face, the main question is, who are we really?

I absolutely love Rebecca Romijn and how she played out her secret.

Hemmer! Hemmer is awesome! He and number 1 play off one another brilliantly.

I'm invested in SNW. Far superior to the very poor show that is Discovery.

More please!

Trying really hard to like this

Warning: Spoilers
But it is so sadly predictable which ST newer was. The moment, like 2 minutes into the plot, you hear "ionization storm" and of course anyone watching ST thought "they wont be able to beam out".

However with ST, especially TNG, any time you thought you had the direction of plot figured, you were wrong. Which is why ST was so good.

So predictably they cant beam out, you think why not go with shuttles, they have the most advanced computers/personell , they should have know EXACTLY, to the second know, when the storm will hit, block transport and all the problems it will bring.

Just sooo lazy writing by non ST fan writers.

And then afterwards you have the majority of the ep of boring running around on the ship while on the ground THE MOMENT you see the "plasma creatures" you know for a fact they are the colonists cause since the BEGINNING of the episode the captain has been insinuating the colonists misteriously (year right) started disappearing when these creatures began appearing. Come on...At least try.

And on and on so many random coincidences and illyrian first officer or inclusion of some totally random story of child stuck in transporter buffer. I thought hes gonna say wife but I think 99% of viewers knew it is going to be something cheesy like that, some family member or spouse.

Little far fetched
info-354-54955920 May 2022
Liking the new star trek I'm really enjoying what they're doing with the crew and characters. But this episode was a little bit strange and I'm not going to add any spoilers here but there were a lot of things that really tested the borders of science and were moving more into the realm of fantasy than science fiction so I'm going to take my vote a little down for this one though I'm excited to see the next episode.

A good episode
tudorbedereag19 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
In this episode we learn a lot about Una and Illyrians.

The episode addresses many social issues such as discrimination and prejudice. It reminded me of the DS9 episodes "In pale moon light" (When Una deletes her personal diary like Sisko did) and "Doctor Bashir, I presume" (When Una's secret is revealed).

Although not entirely original, it was a good episode.

Ghosts of Illyria
Prismark1019 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
A bit of a switcheroo. What looked initially like a La'an Noonien-Singh heavy episode. It deals with genetically augmented humans.

It becomes an exploration of Number One, Una Chin-Riley background as a virus creates a medical emergency on the Enterprise.

Piker and Spock are trapped on a planet waiting for an ion storm to pass. So they are unable to do much regarding what is taking place on the starship.

Another old school episode to give it a Star Trek feel. I am of the opinion that Strange New Worlds needs to do something more complex rather than try to copy a show made over 50 years ago.

La'an's ancestry is recounted and the problems she encountered growing up. The biggest clue as to where the story was going to shift to is when Number One carried Dr M'Benga over her shoulder.

It did make me wonder just what kind of screening did Starfleet have. The reveal that Number One is an Illyrian.

Female
syncopatedrhythm20 May 2022
Ok show, million times better than Discovery or Picard. Still a little too female centric for me, seems to be a common thread in modern Trek. Well at least I know my tax dollars for building Ontario Place back in the 70s are paying off? Sorry non Toronto residents, opening scenes with the buildings on water and the geodesic dome.

Sadly disappointing and predictable
Déjà vu is not something you want to experience when you start watching an all new Star Trek series, especially one titled "Strange New Worlds". But that's exactly what I experienced while watching this episode of the series. I'm sure there have been at least two or maybe three episodes very similar to this one in previous Star Trek series.

Also, while I know it can take a while to develop characters and that's what initial episode concentrate on, so far I'm not liking any of them enough to care.

Perhaps when/if they start to encounter more interesting/challenging aliens then some interest and excitement may actually be brought to the show.

For now, The Orville is still far ahead of any recent Star Trek series. It's good to see that season 3 of The Orville will very soon be released. Go Seth!

WOW
dawsonc-5316120 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Now for me THAT is just real good STAR TREK.

Like one of the many Star Trek Deep Space Nine episodes where the writers really got into a subject and brought out the emotions, the implications on people and the effects of issues we face as in society, and explore it.

If the shows keeps up this caliber, even though it has changed so much of the "Look" of the Trek world I grew up with, this might become my favorite of all the series.

Nah, I'm too old to change that, but this was excellent!

A good episode
sacaldwell20 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The only reasons I gave it an 8 is because I was able to figure out what happened to the Illyrians before Pike and Spock, and the "chimaera" blanketing explanation between Number One and La'an was (IMO) maybe not well thought out. But the use of light as a disease vector was imaginative as was Dr. M'Benga's solution to keep his daughter from dying, which opens another plotline yet to be resolved in a single episode. Lots of reveals in this episode, and I like knowing more about Number One. She seemed to have a rather guarded nature, now we know why.

For a long time I've understood that the best science fiction is indeed a commentary of the social situation in which it was written, and because of that they resonate with the reader/viewer long after their first origination. I want to see where the characters of SNW go next.

I want to just say to the writers, what a good job you all are doing. I've enjoyed each 3 episodes. I know STSNW will inspire generations for space exploration, but to see each one as one.

So simple stories with so much depth
daxtipipi25 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This series is a proof that there is no need of the pretentiousness or complexity of Discovery or Picard for beautiful stories with a deep meaning. On the contrary, those series have become just a mess.

Strange new Worlds is a totally different situation. They begin with a simple story and in every episode they make you think about several important things about humanity and society. Philosophy through entertainment. Just like the original Star Trek and TNG series.

Not my cup of tea.
Andromeda448219 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I didn't particularly enjoy this episode as well as the previous 2 but that's because I didn't follow it too well. The story had me lost in the some places.

However others have enjoyed it. Which gives me confidence that we have a good show right here.

And for what it's worth I sit through these episodes and feel as satisfied as I would with a typical DS9 or TNG. It's by far not up to their best standards but it's definitely Star Trek.

The disease was a bit weird. And the whole story was a bit weird. I liked the realisation Spock made of the lost colony, a cool bit of lore.

The Doctors secret is uncharacteristically not Star Fleet (or star trek). Why wouldn't the chief just run by his plan to save his daughter? Seems weird to keep that a secret. I really love the story behind it and the characters motivation for it. But yeah a bit weird.

Like, pioneer the technology, standardise it? Maybe even have that be the story? Not this weird disease that lodely revels this somewhat paramount fact in such a trivial way at the end.

Overall it wasn't bad and it was light years better than the other shows (The Adventures of Space Jesus and Star Trek: Pension Plan).

I really like the engineer. I like the doctor. Number one is a strong character. Pike and Spock are also great.

Allegory of a Pandemic
slak96u19 May 2022
Some filler, good filling though. The pace is nice and steady, the content is at times predictable, but executed well, and the writing is as good as any Sci Fi series I've seen. Production is still top notch, I feel like if it was going to fall off at some point it would have been this episode. The plot of this episode is a "classic" one that nearly all of us that follow ST should be accustomed to and it was done well, though a bit of a dues ex machina to sum up the episodes conflict. Felt like a bit of an easy out, but still a solid episode. Still really enjoying the series, it shows so much promise.

My big issue... the male leads are vapid. Every compelling storyline up to this point has been focused on the female crew. The males are there to redshirt, screw up, or become incapacitated and wait for one of the many females to figure it out and save the day... The symbolism is not lost on me, I get it, role reversal from past ST and Sci-Fi series. Yet, still... three hours down and it's getting a bit old. I just don't understand why it has to be one extreme over the other, many series are able to pull of some semblance of balance.

Quality Dropped on This One & Preachy
ttmdoc26 May 2022
Enjoy this show a lot, but this episode? Writing was stilted, scenes we set up in odd ways, once I wasn't even sure who characters were talking to. Acting was off too, except for Anson Mount & Ethan Peck ( who continues to be excellent). I also found this one overly preachy. Star Trek has always taught us about the beauty of acceptance and the evil of bigotry, but did so through the stories, not by characters telling us how awful we ( used?) to be. It got tedious and boring. Tell us a good yarn with a moral question at its core, and teach through examples. But get off the pulpits please.

Love this show!
jonastevens21 May 2022
This show has found the secret to Star Trek success in my opinion. 1. Stop trying to make Star Trek hip and cool 2. A different adventure each week.

Also, the actor playing Pike is perfect. Dare I say the next Kirk?

No its not TNG or TOS but that time has passed. People need to accept that and enjoy. This show is great.

Coming Out
pjgs2006 June 2022
Warning: Spoilers
A really good episode. About what we hide, why we hide it, and the connection that can come when we stop hiding. I liked it. Some kinda creepy bits too, the light beings were a bit unsettling clawing their way into where Spock and Pike were.

Reminded me of Doctor Who's "42," an episode where a living sun infects crew members of a ship.

AS USUAL, THE WEEKLY PROBLEM IS RESOLVED WITH LUCK, COINCIDENCE, AND MAGIC...
jeersNcheers24 May 2022
...rather than with technology, science, hard work, and intelligence. I did think the Illyrians were interesting and imaginative, but like the last episode, the characters (here, Spock and Pike, last week, it was Spock and some woman), sat around and waited and looked around and conversed, and wasted most of the episode doing Nothing. At. All!

Because of Trek
SteffW20 May 2022
Because of Star Trek, as a tween coming of age at a time of civil strife and my country at war, I had a place in my imagination to shelter and Think Differently about the future. TOS gave Steve Jobs and many of his generation an ideal to aspire to and an idea to make happen.

Because of Trek, as I try to adjust to the Strange New World of this century, I made the Discovery of an artist with a talent for laughing at the absurd with a straight face. Expecting to laugh at her performance I cried instead as Tig Notaro had the courage to recreate her last moments with her beloved mother. I had no idea how badly I needed to imagine the closure that Covid had denied me with my own mom. Like saying goodbye to favorite, gracefully aging characters from previous Generations, it was one of many good cries because of Trek.

I hope many will see our present day through the eyes of the "GHOSTS OF ILLYRIA." Moments after my watching this episode congressmen and women streamed online to take a stand on the steps of our nation's Capital. Quoting "e pluribus unum" -out of many one- they denounced any citizen and every medium or political party that seeks in the name superiority or right-of-greivance to dominate or harm another.

We may never evolve to accept ourselves and each other as we are- not male nor female, LGBT nor straight, not one race (or species) nor another. But because of Trek we can still imagine it and so perhaps invent our way to that future.
