The cult sitcom Friends ran on television from 1994 to 2004, leaving a void that spin-offs and imitations have inevitably had to fill – and they continue to appear from time to time, with varying degrees of success.
The series Happy Endings, built on the same formula as Friends, started rather modestly on ABC and did not receive positive reviews at first, but, as often happens, it gradually gained momentum – some people began to compare it to Friends, and it was not in favor of the latter. All the more painful was its cancellation in 2013 after only three seasons.
What is Happy Endings About?
The pilot plays out the runaway bride drama: Dave and Alex are standing at the altar, preparing to say their last vows before entering into a legal marriage. Suddenly some crazy guy on roller skates bursts into the church, screaming that he has objections: Alex is the love of his life.

When she’s not earning laughs as the flighty but metamorphosing Summer Dutkowsky, the self-proclaimed “hot one” of Girls5eva, the real Busy Philipps — beloved actor, internet personality, and podcaster — has spent the past seven years building a reputation as the brutally honest one.

As television and film continue to synthesize into a gray streaming sludge known as “content,” TV still has one unique trait going for it. The noble episode.
Television has been an episodic medium ever since it was first invented as an excuse to sell commercial time. Episodes are TV’s secret weapon. Though they exist as a part of a whole, TV episodes are unmistakably their own thing. Each episode of television comes complete with a unique script, a fresh guest cast, and even its own name. Now, however, an insidious new trend has jeopardized TV episodes’ distinctive status. Shows feel increasingly emboldened to leave their episodes title-less.
You’ve undoubtedly seen them as you’ve scrolled through your streaming subscriptions. Whether they run with “Part 1, Part 2, etc.,” “Chapter 1, Chapter 2, etc.,” or even just “Episode 1, Episode 2, etc.,” many series are forgoing their sacred duty to give their episodes titles.
This is frustrating on several fronts.

After just two seasons, the Courteney Cox-starring horror series “Shining Vale” has been given the axe by Starz, and that’s not even the worst news about the show this afternoon.
Variety reports, “The Season 2 finale of the horror comedy, produced by Warner Bros. TV, aired on December 1. Not only will the show be cut by the network, the first two seasons will be removed from the streaming service at the end of the year.”
“Shining Vale” Season 2 premiered on the Starz streaming service on October 13, 2023, and Variety notes that the show didn’t find enough of an audience to justify a third season.
The bigger issue here, however, is the news that both seasons of “Shining Vale” will be removed from the Starz streaming service. The series has to date not received a single physical media release, so this could be another case of a streaming project being...

Writer Jen D’Angelo got her start working on episodes of shows Workaholics, Cougar Town, and Young Rock, and now she’s on a streak of successfully getting her feature scripts brought to the screen. She wrote the long-awaited sequel Hocus Pocus 2, the time travel slasher Totally Killer, and the newly released comedy Quiz Lady – and next on her to-do list is Hocus Pocus 3. D’Angelo has previously teased that the new sequel could bring Hannah Waddingham back as her Hocus Pocus 2 character The Witch Mother, and during an interview with Collider she also gave a hint as to what could bring the Sanderson Sisters back into action, seeking revenge against Salem.
D’Angelo said, “I have my theories about what we could see (in Hocus Pocus 3), and what things mean and where we could take these characters. It’s interesting to be like, ‘Now we have even...

This past weekend, the tragic news came down that the popular "Friends" star Matthew Perry passed away at the age of 54. Most well-known for playing Chandler Bing, the fan-favorite character many considered to be the beating heart of the classic sitcom, the actor's career spanned several decades and included appearances on dozens and dozens of various movies and shows. As the world continues to mourn the loss of such an icon, countless fans have come forward to memorialize his life, legacy, and screen presence outside of the go-to example of "Friends." Although he would never find another starring role quite like the one he enjoyed on the show that made his name and turned him into one of the most famous popular figures around the globe, Perry went on to make an undeniable impact wherever his journey took him until the end.

In the wake of Matthew Perry's recent tragic passing at the age of 54, it's worth remembering that Perry was very much the heart of "Friends" throughout all 10 seasons. He had a specific brand of delivery and a unique role in the group. He wasn't as over-the-top as other sitcom staples, but he was the one who made the show what it was, raising it above the other sitcoms of its time. As /Film senior editor Jacob Hall noted, "Ross and Rachel got the headlines. But Chandler was the soul of 'Friends.'"
He didn't just help put the show on the map, but also helped keep it going strong long after most sitcoms would've run out of steam. Chandler's relationship with Courteney Cox's Monica, which came seemingly out of nowhere in the Season 4 finale, quickly escalated to become one of the show's central storylines. Part of why...

The cast of Friends used collective bargaining to level out their salaries. As an ensemble cast, they wanted to be treated as equals as their wages grew from $22K per episode to $1M. Each cast member of Friends earned around $90 million in base salary alone from the show before the addition of any backend bonuses and ongoing royalties from syndication, racking each actor up an impressive net worth. For 10 seasons, the Friends cast was considered the gold standard of sitcom television, but where do they stand financially today? Here is the net worth of the Friends cast ranked from richest to poorest.

It has been 25 years since Keri Russell graced the small screen in the iconic role of Felicity Porter.
Felicity, the J.J. Abrams and Matt Reeves-produced college drama, was a critical darling of The WB, becoming a phenomenon well before "the big chop" controversy and often topping the list of young adult classics to this very day.
The series amassed 84 episodes over four seasons, and it was nominated for 38 awards, including a Golden Globe Best Actress nod for Keri Russell.
The series remains impactful, even two and a half decades later. And it's primarily due to the allure of the cast, many of whom are still going strong in their careers all these years later.

Game shows have been a staple of the world's television-viewing diet since the medium's infancy. "Spelling Bee" first hit the British telly in 1938, while "Truth or Consequences" made a one-off debut on New York City's Wnbt in 1941. Our fascination with smarty pants contestants flaunting their vast trivia knowledge brought us the high-stakes duo of NBC's "Twenty-One" and CBS' "The 64,000 Question," which led to the 1950s quiz show scandals.
Over a half-century later, we're still hooked on programs like "Jeopardy," "Wheel of Fortune" and "The Price Is Right." Some of these shows require contestants to be genuinely well-read; others ask people to be semi-knowledgeable about retail value and physically capable of spinning a big wheel. Regardless of the skill (or utter lack thereof) involved, there is something undeniably thrilling about watching a regular working stiff go on live television and win a decent chunk of change. Depending on the show,...

When developing her on-screen friendship with co-star Christa Miller, “Shrinking” star Jessica Williams said she positioned it as if they were hanging out “like a ‘Real Housewife of Pasadena.’”
In other words, she approached the relationship between her character, Gaby, and and Miller’s character, Liz, through the lens of her fascination with reality TV and obsession with the “Real Housewives” franchise. In this episode of Variety‘s Awards Circuit Podcast, Williams and Miller share how that TV friendship has developed into a real-life, off-screen one as well.
In separate interviews, Williams and Miller discussed the dynamic of their characters’ evolving personalities and what they hope for the second season. Listen below!

Busy Philipps was pulling up her Spanx in a private dining room in Midtown, New York, when we met on an October afternoon. “Are we in a Goodfellas movie?” she asked, using an expletive and laughing as she took in the ostentatiously luxe cherry-wood-walled space. “What is about to happen?”
She was about halfway through a frenetic day of publicity, having knocked out an appearance on Good Morning America to promote her candid new memoir, This Will Only Hurt a Little.
The book is a freewheeling tour through Philipps’ career, relationships and on-and-off-again stardom. Though she began writing it before the #MeToo movement took off last year, it has already generated some related headlines. One old story resurrected was her account of James Franco being rough with her on the set of Freaks and Geeks.
The book’s release is just part of what was the biggest month (October) of Philipps’s career so far.

The delightfully quirky NBC sitcom "Community" ran for five seasons on NBC from 2009-2014, with a sixth season on Yahoo! Screen in 2015. In a group of community college misfits like failed lawyer Jeff (Joel McHale), misguided activist Britta (Gillian Jacobs), overachiever Annie (Alison Brie), group mom Shirley (Yvette Nicole Brown), former football star Troy (Donald Glover), and obnoxious millionaire Pierce (Chevy Chase), film student with social anxiety Abed (Danny Pudi) stood out as the most lovable. My opinion, sure, but I know I'm not alone in this.
I do want to note that I don't mean to diagnose Abed at all. I am not qualified, and he is a fictional character. Still, for those of us (including myself) who aren't neurotypical, there was something so relatable about Abed. Some of us saw ourselves or our friends and family in the way he didn't always make eye contact, or the hyperfocus...

It is a miracle that Dan Harmon's groundbreaking sitcom "Community" lasted more than a half-season on NBC. The series about seven misfits who form a study group at the fictional Greendale Community College was aggressively dense in its world-building and proudly esoteric in its references. How esoteric? In only its second season, the show turned what was set up as a "Pulp Fiction" homage into an invigoratingly cerebral riff on "My Dinner with Andre" provoked by a character's extra work on Bill Lawrence and Kevin Biegel's "Cougar Town." Not so shockingly, "Community" ranked a dire 138 in the Nielsen ratings that year.
Harmon and a crack staff of writers that included Megan Ganz, Dino Stamatopoulos, Liz Cackowski, Chris McKenna, and Andy Bobrow shredded the outside of the envelope of what was acceptable on a network sitcom. It made "Seinfeld" look like "Full House." Critics and a cult following kept...

There are many types of performances that leave an impression on their actors, but a particularly wacky one stood out for "Community" star Danny Pudi, who played pop culture-obsessed Abed Nadir. Doing a Reddit Ask Me Anything back in 2011, the actor was asked about his favorite scenes in the series. At that point, the series was still only in its second season, and he would still have plenty of ridiculous scenes to experience. But there was one that rose above the rest, from a very Abed-centric episode.
In season 2, episode 19, "Critical Film Studies," Abed asks his friend and fellow study group member Jeff (Joel McHale) out to a fancy dinner, while Jeff is trying to surprise Abed for his birthday by throwing him a "Pulp Fiction"-themed party. Abed explains to Jeff that he's trying to live a life more removed from pop culture references and that he's trying to grow up,...

Bill Lawrence has lost count of how many episodes of television he’s made at this point. There were 145 episodes of Spin City, he tallies, and another 182 of Scrubs. Before he co-created Ted Lasso (34 episodes) or Shrinking (10 and counting), he made one season of Clone High, three seasons of Undateable and six seasons of Cougar Town, with several other series mixed in. “So, it’s got to be close to a thousand by now,” he reasons.
The real marker of career longevity, however, is the fact that the prolific showrunner can be watching a sitcom now and if any one of his three children are to hit pause after a joke setup, Lawrence can, nine times out of 10, deliver the punchline. “It’s like my magic trick for my kids,” he says. “They’re like, ‘Oh, well, you’ve read this script,’ and I’ll be like, ‘I definitely didn...

This article contains spoilers for the Shrinking season 1 finale.
Though an honest and unflinching story about grief, season 1 of Apple TV+ comedy Shrinking was also cheerful ray of sunshine.
That’s in keeping with the M.O. of its creators Jason Segel, Bill Lawrence, and Brett Goldstein. Segel is a beloved Muppet-enchanted movie star while Lawrence and Goldstein are fresh off of producing Ted Lasso, another Apple TV+ comedy so relentlessly optimistic that it makes Mr. Rogers look like Mr. Squidward. Shrinking is an important entrant into the increasingly packed space of “Good Vibes” television.
That’s why it’s particularly surprising that the very last scene of the Shrinking season 1 finale features a moment that could darken the tone considerably of the already-announced season 2. Allow us to explain.

There's never been a better time to be a fan of television. Streaming platforms have forced network television to step up their game, and the continued competition between said streamers has inspired some of the most creative approaches to both serialized and episodic entertainment. For a time, it used to be that prestige TV was reserved for the creator-driven tragic dramas of the 2000s and 2010s like "The Sopranos," "The Wire," "Lost," "Mad Men," "Breaking Bad," and "Deadwood." But now, prestige TV can encompass everything from the heartwarming adventures of "Only Murders in the Building" to the unflinching realness of "P-Valley."
It's an exciting evolution because the label of "prestige" is no longer solely relegated to shows about complicated men. Sometimes, like in the case of an edgy teen show like "Euphoria" or a cannibalism mystery thriller like "Yellowjackets," even high school girls can be at the center of must-watch TV.

Freaks and Geeks barely lasted one season. But the majority of the Freaks and Geeks cast was a close-knit crew that worked hard. Maybe it was their naivete or youth, but the ensemble cast was really something special to watch.
Jason Segel said the cast constantly worked on their lines. They found ways to improve their characters, even during their time off.
How ‘Freaks and Geeks’ went from a canceled show to a cult following
Freaks and Geeks was a teen dramedy that first aired in 1999. The show followed a pair of siblings as they navigated the social scene of their high school back in the early 1980s.
