Quentin Tarantino's "Inglourious Basterds" took first place at the domestic box office this weekend by grossing around $38 million. This is the biggest Tarantino opening by far, beating "Kill Bill Vol 2," which bowed to $25 million back in 2004. At the worldwide box office, "Basterds" took in a total of $65 million, almost making back its $70 million budget. "District 9" finished in second place after falling just 49% in its second week to $18.9 million and a 10-day total of $73.5 million. The film cost only $30 million to produce. The weekend's other three wide openers bowed softly. Robert Rodriguez's PG-rated family fantasy "Shorts" brought in $6.6 million and ended up taking sixth place; Fox Searchlight's comedy "Post Grad" earned $2.8 million and took 10th place; Disney's sports documentary "X Games 3D: The Movie" -- slotted for one week only in 1,399 3-D venues -- brought in just $800,000. Quentin Tarantino's World War II actioner "Inglourious Basterds," a pivotal Weinstein Co. release starring Brad Pitt, debuted gloriously during the weekend with an estimated $37.6 million in chart-topping boxoffice.
"Basterds" is touted by some as a make-or-break film for the recently struggling indie, even though Universal is distributing the film internationally and will share evenly in any worldwide profit. Sony's sci-fi thriller "District 9" finished second after falling just 49% in its sophomore session to $18.9 million and a 10-day cume of $73.5 million.
The weekend's other three wide openers bowed softly. Robert Rodriguez's PG-rated family fantasy "Shorts" from Warner Bros. rung up $6.6 million for sixth place; Fox Searchlight's comedy "Post Grad" registered $2.8 million in 10th, and Disney's sports documentary "X Games 3D: The Movie" -- slotted for one week only in 1,399 extra-dimensional venues -- fetched just $800,000.

World War II action drama “Inglourious Basterds” strutted into the marketplace like a theatrical blue blood Friday, registering an estimated $14.3 million on just its first day in release.
The Weinstein Co.-distributed Brad Pitt starrer now seems a lock to gross more than $30 million through the weekend--much more if its first-day momentum holds.
“Basterds” was directed by Quentin Tarantino, who brings his typically gore-filled perspective to a story about a fictional band of Jewish-American soldiers fighting in Nazi-occupied France.
The “Basterds” release has drawn particularly close scrutiny due to conventional wisdom that the Weinsteins need the film to succeed in order to maintain a firm fiscal footing with their company. Execs insist any financial concerns have been exaggerated.
Sony’s scifi actioner “District 9” was the second-highest Friday grosser with $5.5 million, or 61% less than on the same day a week earlier. That gave the Peter Jackson-produced pic an eight-day cume of $60.1 million.
