Sobering Drama

Warning: Spoilers
The movie is sobering but it is good. The auntie, jenny, really does care about Billy when it seems most staff don't, they see just another beat up kid. It's sobering because Jenny was terminated and slapped with a restraining order all for being the only one really trying to help Billy. In addition, the mother Rachel was a sociopath - she beat Billy, she feels she can discipline her child any way she sees fit and she killed Billy's dog! I personally didn't care for the ending.

Billy was released into the care of his new auntie Ruth an older woman and the guardian was Ellen the social worker at the hospital. Jenny had Billy at her house she said to babysit often, the ending never said she adopted him or not. I'm not sure it's implied. It would have been nice to know if Rachel went to jail and got the mental health treatment she desperately needed and also, if Billy found a new permanent home. To me that's crucial to know since the movie is called The Right Mom.

Finally, I felt some parts of the movie was unrealistic. I used to work in the hospital and a law firm in the US and that's not how child abuse cases are handled. I don't even know how the stepdad was a suspect because he had just got home whereas Rachel had been home all night with Billy. Also, social services would have taken him immediately, filed for an emergency petition due to the abuse, no matter who did it until they can investigate further. In the movie defense, maybe it was set in another country with different child abuse laws.
