J.J. Abrams' "Star Trek" reboot shook up the classic characters it depicts, and one of the biggest changes was turning Spock (Zachary Quinto) and Nyota Uhura (Zoe Saldana) into lovers. In the first movie, this is a bit of a bait and switch; there's some early sexual tension between Uhura and Kirk (Chris Pine), and she's even the first of the future Enterprise crew he meets when they flirt at a bar. Nyota, though, only has eyes for the Vulcan (like plenty of Trekkie fangirls) and the relationship endures in the two sequels, "Into Darkness" and "Beyond."
Now, this isn't a totally unprecedented pairing. There are a few suggestive moments between Spock (Leonard Nimoy) and Uhura (Nichelle Nichols) in early episodes of "Star Trek: The Original Series." In "The Man Trap," Uhura tries to strike up a conversation with Spock, and in "Charlie X," she sings while Spock plays his lute.

Daft Punk have unveiled the 10th anniversary reissue of their final album, Random Access Memories. Featuring nine previously-unreleased tracks — totaling 35 minutes of new music — the release offers a unique glimpse into the French duo’s creative process, and pays homage to the celebrated, 2x album that marked the end of their run.
The duo also unveiled a video for the new track “Infinity Repeating (2013 Demo),” featuring Julian Casablancas + The Voidz, which they note will be their final music video. Watch it below.
“Infinity Repeating (2013 Demo)” was recorded during the initial sessions for Random Access Memories at Conway Recording Studios in Los Angeles and Electric Lady Studios in New York. Built around a literal loop, the song (and its animated video) allude to the confluence of humanity and technology, a theme present throughout the album. “It’s lovely and bizarre, like a human,” Casablancas said in a statement. “And, like a human,...

This article contains The Power spoilers.
When a season one finale is done correctly, it can seem much more like a beginning than an end. Such is the case with The Power on Prime Video, which feels like it’s just getting its principal characters into the starting gate for the race they’re truly preparing to run now that they’ve come into their own. While Margot’s life in American politics may necessitate a subtler approach than what Tatiana is capable of in Moldova, and although the now unified Roxy and Eve may have a challenge reconciling the complementary aspects of their approach, really no possibility is off the table for season 2.
The key to understanding the message behind The Power lies in accepting that the awakening abilities in young women will not necessarily solve the world’s problems; they will simply give people newly risen to positions...

Nearly a decade ago, Chris Pratt’s Peter Quill traipsed along to Redbone across an alien world, and relative to all the previous MCU entries, there was something initially fresh about the encounter until the shine wore off, and other blockbuster fare picked up all the wrong lessons. Subsequent outings have retread the blend of screwball antics, pew pew lasers, and a retro soundtrack to bring us Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. It’s a Marvel entry surprisingly free of any ties to broader property outside of the first two volumes, but mired in the same bag of tricks with a bit more slime on it.
After a brief but alarming cold open depicting Rocket Raccoon’s surgical transformation from cute trash panda to wisecracking tech wiz, Vol. 3 brings us up to date with our ne’er do well heroes, finding Quill lovelorn over a version of Gamora who doesn’t remember him.

Nothing's a surefire bet in Hollywood until it is. Few took "Star Wars" seriously until it forever changed the movie landscape in 1977, ushering in our modern blockbuster era. Many were just as skeptical of the very concept of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, right up until "The Avengers" became the highest-grossing non-James Cameron movie ever at the time of its release in 2012. But when it did, you can bet your bottom dollar studios did everything in their power to replicate that success as quickly as possible -- and you can be just as well-assured that the outcome was often more regrettable than not.

Before she makes her move to Hollywood and the craptacular machine that are Hollywood cut outs like MI4 & Sherlock Holmes 2, dragon tattooed girl Noomi Rapace has a few European titles in the works and the first to hit the international front is Svinalängorna (Beyond).
Directed by actress turned director Pernilla August and based on a best settling novel by Susanna Alakoski, Rapace leads the pack of great Finnish actors including Ville Virtanen (Sauna (review)) and Outi Mäenpää, as Leena, a woman who, on the morning of Christmas eve receives a phone call from the hospital of her childhood hometown explaining that her mother is dying, a call that brings up her dark childhood and leads her to seeing her mother for the first time in her adult life.

Venice Critic's Week have released their seven film (plus two) slate and have managed to lasso Swedish actress Pernilla August's highly anticipated directorial debut Svinalängorna, or what I'll now be calling by the simpler title of Beyond. A mostly European group of seven, the section is modeled much in the same way as Cannes Critic's Week: promising works from first-time filmmakers. The opening film, Carlo Mazzacurati's Notte Italiana is actually a 1987 flick that must be a silver year anniversary kind of presentation and the closing film comes from the Philippines in Gutierrez Mangansakan II's Limbunan. Last year the most "noteworthy" title from the sidebar was an out of competition showing of Erik Gandini's Videocracy which would receive a preem in Toronto, but this year I'd say more than one title has a chance at crossing over to Tiff. Here is a quick listing of the titles,...

To go with the announcement that Darren Aronofsky’s Black Swan is opening the Venice Film Festival, we have the announcement of the films that will be making a splash at Critics’ Week.
This year’s line-up is heavy on European releases, all of which are world premieres including Alix Delaporte’s Angèle et Tony about a recently released convict and her relationship with a fisherman, Massimo Coppola’s Hai Paura Del Buio, Eitan Tzur’s noir Hitparzut X (Naomi, Syllas Tzoumerkas’ Hora proelefsis (Homeland), Vlado Skafar's Oča (Dad), a drama about a father and his son and Pernilla August’s Svinalängorna (Beyond) which stars the newest of international stars Noomi Rapace.
Perhaps the most interesting of the films on the line-up is also the only one which is not European, Marcelino Islas Hernández’s Martha, about an older woman who loses her job to a computer.
