- Seeking answers, the U.S.S. Discovery ventures into a subspace rift created by the Dark Matter Anomaly. Meanwhile, Book faces a strange visitor from his past.
- Book is increasingly impatient to figure out the origins of the DMA, but Burnham wants to follow process and orders go step by step in her investigations. Zora is increasingly self-aware.
Discovery enters a subspace rift created by the DMA to investigate it, finding a void that they are unable to navigate out of. The Discovery is looking for any clues that might point to the origin of the DMA. Inside the rift, the ship gets no data, no scans, no visuals, no sounds. A DOT robot leaves the ship to investigate and disintegrates. The DOT was eaten. Adira says that there is something out there and it has an edge, which the Discovery cannot see.
Whatever is out there is also getting closer. It will get to the ship in 33 minutes, at which point the Discovery will also disintegrate. Saru says that they are not getting any data to complete their scientific mission and the ship is in danger. Burnham aborts the mission and orders that the ship is taken out of the rift. But the ship has lost all navigation and cannot ascertain the right direction to travel in.
Book and Stamets attempt to jump the ship out of the rift. Book offers to navigate, while Stamets focuses on collecting all the data. Book is hit by an energy surge of some kind. Stamets tells Burnham that even the Mycelial network inside the rift is being eaten by the same entity that destroyed DOT, and which is why the ship cannot make the jump using the network. Book begins having hallucinations of his deceased father whose birthday it is. Books's father tells him to hunt for the origins of the DMA rather than sitting on the Discovery.
The ship's advanced computer, Zora, attempts to carry out her usual duties while helping to find a way out of the rift and unusually finds herself becoming overwhelmed with internal ship data. Gray offers to help Zora clear her processes by playing a game together. Gary has been playing this game to assimilate into his new body. After doing this, Zora is able to detect micro-variances on the external sensors which can be used to lead them out of the void. Zora is feeling guilt due to the loss of life on board the Discovery when she fails to detect the entity coming close to the ship and eating into the hull. Zora also feels that Burnham is losing faith in her.
Stamets starts to analyze the remnants of the energy surge inside Book's brain. Stamets realizes that the hallucinations have been caused by interaction with particles from the barrier at the edge of the galaxy. The particles found in Book's brain can only be found at the galactic barrier. This means that the DMA bought these particles with it from outside the galaxy. The DMA would have deposited more particles at the point it punched into the void. The void would have the greatest concentration of particles at the point where the DMA punched in and that's the point from which the Discover can escape. Adira figures out that the particles resonate at a frequency of 218 Kilohertz which is identical to Sonar. Burnham sends an audio pulse into the void and follows the direction of the echo ping to chart a way out of the void.
But the ship will lose shields before it exits the void. Just outside the void, the ship will hit the plasma barrier and without shields the temperature within the ship will rise beyond safe levels. To protect the crew from the effect that moving through the void will have, Burnham transports them all into the "pattern buffer" (where matter is converted into energy for transportation) and flies the ship with Zora. Zora shows sign of fear and distress, which are real human emotions, during the escape. As the ship flies through the plasma barrier, the temperature inside the ship exceeds the safety parameters of the EV suit Burnham is wearing and she passes out. She orders Zora to revive the crew from the pattern buffer when it is safe to do so.
Burnham wakes up in sickbay to learn that they successfully exited the rift. The ship goes to space dock for extensive repairs.
