Just as Mitch Hurwitz, Jim Vallely, and Dean Lorey begin writing the new 10-episode season of the once-cancelled-and-recently-internet-greenlit Fox television show Arrested Development (scheduled to air on Netflix sometime in 2013), Crackle greenlights another entrant into the Long-Form-Content-of-Television-Quality-but-Distributed-Online fray. Andrew Wallenstein at Variety reports the digital network, studio, and destination for television programs, movies, and a healthy amount of original web series just ordered six episodes of a half-hour anthology series dubbed The Unkown. Sons of Anarchy producer Chris Collins and the Co-Head of Fox Writers Studio Steve Tzirlin are on board to executive produce. The Unkown will be in the vein of The X-Files, Creepshow, and/or Twilight Zone and is scheduled scheduled to go into production in March for a 2012 release. That’s almost a full year after Eric Berger, Executive Vice President of Digital Networks at Sony Pictures Television, announced Crackle would make a pivot into long-form, but still male-leaning programming.

You can’t swing a cat these days without hitting a comedy series on Vimeo, Daily Motion, or YouTube. But if you’re looking for drama, you’ll mostly still find it on the boob tube.
In 2009, 50% of adults watched comedy online compared to 31% in 2007, according to a 2010 Pew Research report. Even mainstream stars are taking their act to the smaller screen, like former Friend Lisa Kudrow’s Web Therapy, the winner of this year’s Webby Award for Best Comedy: Long Form or Series. “For whatever reason, someone has put out to the web world that comedy is what works online,” Tina Cesa Ward, executive producer, writer and director of the widely-acclaimed web drama Anyone But Me [above, below], tells Fast Company.

Rumors had been circling of a retreat from web originals over at Sony’s 4-year-old online video network Crackle, as the usually heavy flow of short-form web series that would be its bread and butter over the past few years had dried to a trickle. Previous short-form (sub 10-min episode) web tentpoles like The Bannen Way, Angel of Death and Jailbait had found a business a morphing themselves into whatever medium was buying. But not enough to greenlight dozens of them this year. Then comes a bit of a bombshell yesterday afternoon in Variety, as Eric Berger, Executive VP of digital networks at Sony Pictures Television who oversees Crackle and other properties, announced the network was moving to a long-form strategy. It’s a pivot for the network, citing a shift in the marketplace and amongst its own audience who had grown fond of the site’s heavy helpings of...

Online destinations are vying for ad dollars this Upfront season, but they aren’t the only ones courting advertisers with web original programming. Bet today announced its new slate of shows for its 2011 Upfront presentation tonight in New York City. In addition to the Viacom-owned network’s staples - like the Hip Hop Awards and 106 and Park - Bet is adding a handful of web sereis to its roster, many of which were created, written by, and star individuals who Tubefilter readers will find familiar. The shows include: Lenox Avenue - A dramatic web series that tells the story of three male friends in their mid-twenties, who are good dressers and busy navigating the rough terrain of love, relationships and careers. Set in Harlem, this series is produced by Al Thompson’s (Johnny B. Homeless, The Royal Tenenbaums) ValDean Entertainment and features Thompson as Owen and Dorian Missick (Lucky Nember) as Sellars.

A half hour web show. It’s a simple premise. It makes sense. You don’t want to sit down after a long day at work and watch four minutes of something. You want to relax and engage in a passive entertainment experience that at most requires your active participation in scrolling to the next episode and hitting play once every 22 minutes. And the reason I say a 30-minute web show makes sense isn't simply intuition supported by hypothetical, anecdotal evidence. Hard facts show online video consumers seem to be ready for a half hour web show, too. Lunch time used to be web TV primetime, but in the past two years peak online video viewing hours have shifted from Noon - 3Pm to 8Pm - 11Pm. Viral videos and uber-short-form web series haven’t gone out of vogue, it’s more that a combination of technology, content quality, and...

The Bsc produces Better Sleep Guides and disseminates research linking sufficient sleep to improved physical performance, work productivity, and more, all in the pursuit of teaching you and me how to have pleasant dreams (and helping quality mattress makers sell their products). Do you wish you knew more about The Better Sleep Council? Suite 7 can help with that. A cocktail party so crazy you have to sign a waiver just to get in? I was intrigued. Intrigued enough to hop on the freeway a few miles up to a dark corner of North Hollywood to find the undisclosed home base of the web’s latest live-streaming reality show. Walking up to the three-story loft building it became clear this wasn’t going to be my run-of-the-mill Saturday night drinks at a friend’s place. Before entering the ControlTV loft, I’m hustled into a back room filled with producers and burly Pa types ushering me through a waiver and some ground rules. “Try to keep this PG-13,” said one of the younger producers on duty that night. “Just basically don’t drop the f-bomb too much.” She mentions the 30-second delay on the live stream they’ve set up just in case we get out of hand. And...

Mark Gantt is a mysterious man. Ok, actually if you're been paying even passing attention to web series over the past year then you're no doubt familiar with the story of him and partner Jesse Warren hustling together a spec trailer to a web series (The Bannen Way) they hadn't even shot yet and landing full season order and distribution from Sony Pictures Television. But there's still a mystery to this guy. And this weekend Streamy-winner Gantt plans to share some of his secrets to carving out his own path in the entertainment industry and not waiting for success to just come to him. His "Create Your Own Career" workshop is this Saturday, August 28th in Los Angeles from 9am - 6pm and looks to be targeted at people looking to craft a project for the internet. Crackle had talent of some of their upcoming web projects in attendance during the Sony's Television Critics Association (TCA) event, Tuesday, August 3rd at the Beverly Hilton and Tubefilter was there to get the inside scoop. Interviewees included Michael Panes (Easy To Assemble, Jonathan Dore, and Randy and Jason Sklar (Back on Topps, ["(Layers)"]). The shows they were there to talk about are Backwash and Held-Up, respectfully; two witty, off-the-cuff comedies that show that Crackle seems to be treading farther from the slick, production-value heavy dramas of their recent web past such as The Bannen Way and Urban Wolf. Both series have impressive casts including some comedy and improv as well as television and film veterans. Black Narcissus was originally released in 1947 and caused a sensation with its explosive story about a nun (Deborah Kerr), cloistered in a remote convent in the Himalayas, who must battle elements both external (the punishing weather) and internal (temptations of the flesh over duty to the spirit). Also features stellar turns by England’s greatest actresses at the time: Flora Robson, Kathleen Byron and a young Jean Simmons. One of the most dazzling films ever made, bolstered by Oscar-winning cinematography from Jack Cardiff. By now, if you follow even passively the world of web series, you know well who Mark Gantt and Jesse Warren are. They were the two aspiring creators that defied the odds, making just a trailer to pitch their action drama—The Bannen Way—to anyone who would fund it, ultimately landing a deal with Sony Pictures Television for release on its online network Crackle. To be sure, it was one heck of a slick looking trailer, and there’s something to be said about having Neal Bannen (Gantt) himself making the pitch. Today as the DVD of the complete first season of the Streamy-winning series, cut together as a 94-minute full-length feature movie, hits the shelves, the story has come full circle. Like most of the high-profile Crackle series, the web was a stop along the way of a project’s malleable journey through multiple platforms and content windows.

Web series + dark theater + popcorn. There is really nothing like a little screening of web series with a few hundred fellow online junkies in one of Hollywood's best theaters. Justin Timberlake is trying to give Neal Bannen (Mark Gantt) a run for his money as the web’s brooding sports car action hero. Of course with the apparent budget that Audi invested in its upcoming The Next Big Thing web series, it makes Sony’s The Bannen Way seem like a bargain. The 6-episode branded web series created by ad agency Heimat Berlin for Audi premieres online May 5, timed around the Us rollout of the new Audi A1. Pop singer turned actor Timberlake stars as a suit-toting corporate stooge thrown into a crime underworld through stunner Dania Ramirez. Commerical director Henrik Sundgren directed the joy ride, which can’t help but appear like an extended car commercial. There is a story that unfolds, and viewers will no doubt give this one a chance given the Timberlake connection, who’s SNL videos have endeared him YouTube’s fickle faithful. But...

Film schools have long served as launching pads for film and television careers, and now most major universities offer at least some sort of filmmaking courses, even for those not looking to jump into entertainment. A number of schools have begun looking academically at the impacts of new media on culture and the future of entertainment, but so far the more practical nuts and bolts of web series production and distribution have yet to make it onto into the university course lists. In Los Angeles, two new Web TV education programs have launched this month looking to fill that gap —and at a fraction of a film school tuition. NewMedialocity and Web TV Workshop both offer four-week intro courses for creative types looking to learn how to get an original web series project off the ground. Both take the approach of teaching through experienced guest teachers—those brave souls who...

On a windy, overcast Sunday afternoon the 2010 Streamy Awards took over the Orpheum Theater in downtown Los Angeles. Even though the FearNet webseries “Fear Clinic,” directed by Robert Hall and starring genre favorites Robert Englund, Kane Hodder, Danielle Harris, and Lisa Wilcox, stood alone to represent our favorite genre, that doesn’t mean there wasn’t a gaggle of horror-related goodies to indulge in while working the red carpet event before the show.

The nominees for the 2010 Streamys were announced today. The Streamys celebrate online television programming and this year they have a fantastic line up of nominees. Last year was the Streamys debut year and the winners included high profile shows such as Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog and the exceptional Battlestar Galactica web series The Face of the Enemy.
This year there is even more competition with some really interesting content now being released on the web rather than through more traditional media routes. Two of my favourites from this year’s nominee list are the excellent Interview Project which is presented by davidlynch.com and the slightly flawed but thoroughly enjoyable Angel of Death, created by Ed Brubaker and starring Zoe Bell, which also received a DVD release last year.
The awards ceremony takes place on April 11th 2010 and the full list of nominees is listed below with handy links...

Above is a behind the scenes segment from creators Mark Gantt and Jesse Warren along with producer Bailey Williams on creating the celebrated 'Bannen Style.' It wasn't easy marrying Warren's love of comics and video game action with Gantt's more romanticized "French cinema" tastes, but somehow they managed to craft what is really a sexually charged action comic. Today The Bannen Way rolled out with a wide release today of its first four episodes across a number of distribution outlets including Sony's online video network Crackle, on its gaming system through the PlayStation Store and through internet-enabled Sony Bravia TVs.
