Susan Sarandon stars in The Meddler, from director Lorene Scafaria. Here's our review...
Susan Sarandon is front and centre in The Meddler as Marnie Minervini, a widow who lavishes affection and generosity upon those around her. The title is the simplest we’ve yet had from writer-director Lorene Scafaria, who also gave us Seeking A Friend For The End Of The World and Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist, but it’s a little reductive too.
Since her husband Joe left her with more money than she could ever hope to spend on herself, Marnie has doted on her screenwriting daughter Lori (Rose Byrne), even moving from New York to Los Angeles to be around her. Lori has just gone through a bad break-up and is more exasperated than comforted by her mother’s attentions and decides to throw herself into working on a TV pilot to enforce...

Mariah Carey chose to honor Prince's memory not with a cover, but with an emotional and heartfelt rendition of one of her most popular songs. Carey took a moment during her show in Paris on Thursday night to reflect on the late singer's death, noting that the iconic performer would have wanted fans and friends to celebrate his life rather than make "everything bleak." "We were waiting to come and see you guys for so long and I really wanted to do this show," Carey told the sold-out crowd at Accor Hotels Arena. "I didn't know if I was...

Though The Railway Man didn’t go over so well with critics, Nicole Kidman and Colin Firth are intent on continuing their creative partnership. The pair are currently set to star in period drama Genius, but before that, they’ll be seen on screen together in the thriller Before I Go To Sleep, which we now have our first look at thanks to two photos and a sales poster.
Based on S.J. Watson’s bestselling novel of the same name, the Rowan Joffe-directed film will follow Kidman as a woman who “wakes up each morning with no memory, with her husband (Firth) telling her that she’s suffered a trauma and needs to stay at home. There is an abundance of big questions and thought-worthy theories proposed in Wally Pfister’s directorial debut. An exceptional director of photography for many of Christopher Nolan’s films, Pfister guides the wayward science fiction film Transcendence in a few different directions, unfortunately leading it into a position of narrative confusion that it can’t escape from.

The 2013 Tribeca Film Festival has come to an end, and it's time for Part 1 of our wrap-up of the horror films we took in this year with a look at V/H/S/2, Frankenstein's Army, Big Bad Wolves, and a trio of short films.
Once again I stalked the streets of New York City seeking a little red door in the middle of normal looking homes that would take me to the Tribeca Film Festival press lounge. Within were my partner in low-level future crimes, Heather Buckley, free coffee, and for some reason Magnum Ice Cream Bars. Yes, Tribeca. Make the journos fatter. That will certainly help us walk across town from one film to another. Genius. Pass in hand, I attempted to hit as many of the horror offerings on this year’s schedule as possible, and here's round one of my conclusions (in most instances you'll find links...

This weekend, "Evil Dead," makes its splashy debut nationwide. The new version, by first-time director Fede Alvarez, was produced by original "Evil Dead" confederates Sam Raimi, Bruce Campbell, and Rob Tapert, and once again concerns a group of young people holed up in a cabin in the woods, who unknowingly unleash a terrifying evil. Of course, the question is, has the original been updated sufficiently for contemporary audiences? And for a movie widely advertised as "The Most Terrifying Film You Will Ever Experience," just how intense is it? Read on, for the ten things you should know before seeing the brand-new "Evil Dead!" 1. It's Violent The first thing that anyone should know about this new version of "Evil Dead" is how truly, outrageously violent it its. When we saw the first image of Daniel Day-Lewis in his Abraham Lincoln makeup, we thought it was pretty impressive. Considering this is a two-time Academy Award winner in Lincoln, a film from director Steven Spielberg, we know this is one to see. That it is based in part on Doris Kearns Goodwin’s wondferul book Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln is all the more reason we’re more excited about this than we were with Abe the Vampire Slayer.
According to DreamWorks, which releases the film on November 9, the movie is a “revealing drama that focuses on the 16th President’s tumultuous final months in office. In a nation divided by war and the strong winds of change, Lincoln pursues a course of action designed to end the war, unite the country and abolish slavery. Monty Python’s 1979 film Life of Brian was a masterpiece of surreal and satirical comedy, and always places high when the various Best British Film of All Time polls are announced.
On release its controversial subject matter inevitably ruffled a great many ecclesiastical feathers and was banned in some places in the UK, a ban rumoured to have been upheld in Swansea until 1997.
The documentary The Secret Life of Brian charts the film’s development (from Eric Idle’s glb response to the question of what the Pythons were working on next – he quipped: Jesus Christ – Lust for Glory!) to the famous showdown on the BBC debate programme Friday Night, Saturday Morning. There Pythons John Cleese and Michael Palin were berated by the highly regarded broadcaster Malcolm Muggeridge and the Bishop of Southwark, the Right Reverend Mervyn Stockwood, for their film which they considered as blasphemous.

Filming began in March on the two long-awaited movies after the project narrowly avoided being moved out of New Zealand, with Lord of the Rings director Jackson at the helm again. I’m not sure what to think about the History Channel deciding not to air their Kennedy family miniseries, saying the fictionalized account doesn’t fit with their brand. In the age of no music on MTV, live action on Cartoon Network, and Sarah Palin on The Learning Channel, I don’t know what to make of a network with a sense of identity.

Most of us stop thinking about work as we enter the holiday season, but Hollywood actors and actresses are lining up their jobs for the new year. Mad Men's Christina Hendricks and G4's Olivia Munn will join Kelsey Grammer and Pierce Brosnan in the comedy I Don't Know How She Does It, which stars Sarah Jessica Parker as a woman juggling her work on Wall Street with a family life. Parker herself is also joining the huge ensemble for Garry Marshall's romantic comedy New Year's Eve while Halle Berry is in negotiations for a role too. 30 Rock award winner Alec Baldwin is the latest actor circling a spot in the Broadway adaptation Rock of Ages. Australian (but famous in England) comedian and musician Tim Minchin has written what I’m going to consider the most romantic and finest love song to a blow-up doll ever written. It’s called “Inflatable You,” and is not only the catchiest damn song we’ve heard in weeks, it is also written with a giant quill made up of Genius Rhymes. Sure, he sort of looks like a ginger Russell Brand, but for whatever reason – perhaps sheer talent – comes off as a million times more likable. Language is Sfw, but barely. Now seems as good a time as any to remind all of you about my Real Doll twin, Nika, from a few years back. As quoted in my post from 2008: Meet Nika, My Real Doll Twin. (A side-by-side of Nika compared to me at work today, mouth agape and all… forgive me, I left my whore’s lipstain at home.
