Wes Bentley has worked hand in hand with Jennifer Lawrence and watched her grow as an actress. Both of them starred together in The Hunger Games franchise and have since seen the way their careers have skyrocketed. Bentley’s acting career found its footing thanks to American Beauty, while Lawrence’s big break came with Winter’s Bone. Since then starring as Jamie Dutton in Yellowstone. the actor has done a lot in his career to account for many milestones.

Bentley believes that both the actors had something in common. However, as time went by, the trait they once shared was lost to one. He since has also stated his dismay about the same, regretting having to go awry from a path he once sought refuge in.

Actors have to learn to do all kinds of interesting things in order to play various roles, from accents to dance moves to various skills and hobbies. Jennifer Lawrence learned how to skin and gut a squirrel for her role in the 2010 Kentucky holler noir "Winter's Bone," for example, and the actors in James Cameron's "Avatar: The Way of Water" had to learn how to hold their breath for an extended length of time. For Denis Villeneuve's "Dune: Part One" and "Dune: Part Two," star Timothée Chalamet theoretically had to learn quite a bit, because there are many aspects of life on the desert planet Arrakis that just don't have direct Earth counterparts. It's not like he can just magically understand what it's like to be surrounded by the psychic power-giving spice, for example, but he certainly has to pretend. As his character Paul Atreides, who is destined to become the Muad'dib,...

Jennifer Lawrence became a household name through her iconic portrayal of Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games series. However, her portfolio is way beyond that role, featuring numerous iconic projects like Winter’s Bone, Silver Linings Playbook, American Hustle, and Joy. While her work garnered several acclaim and accolades, she also earned a Razzie nomination for worst actress for her performance in Mother!

Big changes could be coming to the Sundance Film Festival, an incubator of (mostly) American independent film for decades, and the launchpad for Oscar-winning movies like “Coda,” “Manchester By The Sea,” “Whiplash,” “Winter’s Bone,” “The Usual Suspects” and many more. (The number of movies to debut at Sundance that were Oscar-nominated in some category or another is too long to list.) Long associated with the upscale ski resort of Park City, Utah, it looks like the annual event may be thinking of moving elsewhere.
The primary reason cited is that the event is simply “too big” for the small community.
The festival has opened itself up for bidding from hosts, eyeing 2027 as a potential new start date. As per Deadline, other locations can put forth their proposals now through May 1, and a second round will continue through late June. The evaluation will be based in part on “sustainability and inclusivity.

Jennifer Lawrence has had a prolific career over the years and has shown her versatility as an actress starting from her first few projects. She made her breakthrough role playing Ree in Winter’s Bone. Lawrence went on to star in various acclaimed projects including American Hustle, Silver Linings Playbook, The Hunger Games and the X-Men franchise, and Joy.
Jennifer Lawrence became the 2nd youngest Best Actress Oscar nominee for her role in Winter’s Bone
Her most divisive and controversial film was her 2017 film Mother!, directed by Darren Aronofsky. The film was inspired by the Bible and had the actors playing various characters and elements mentioned in it, and Lawrence was the one who had to do most of the heavy lifting. One scene proved to be too much for the actress, and she decided that she would never return to that character ever again.

One of the funniest moments at the recent Academy Awards ceremony occurred when Best Supporting Actress nominee Emily Blunt (“Oppenheimer”) and Best Supporting Actor nominee Ryan Gosling (“Barbie”) appeared together to pay a special tribute to the talented stunt performers who are so often overlooked for their indelible contributions to the motion picture industry. Blunt and Gosling traded barbs over their “Barbenheimer” feud — the result of their films competing against each other at the box office as well as the entire awards season. If their chemistry suggested anything, it’s that moviegoers are in for a real treat when their upcoming film “The Fall Guy” drops into theaters in May.
While Blunt and Gosling bluntly made light of their dispute, they weren’t the only Oscar presenters with scores to settle. There were several other big Hollywood stars who reunited on the stage alongside one of their past Oscar rivals,...

It’s to be expected that Jennifer Lawrence would don Dior at the 2024 Oscars — but the French fashion house’s longtime ambassador stepped out in a surprise pop of polka dots at tonight’s ceremony.
For her return to the Academy Awards red carpet, the No Hard Feelings star wore a strapless black-and-white off-shoulder gown from Christian Dior Haute Couture’s Spring 2024 collection. (She last attended the Oscars in 2018.) The playful dotted print — a pattern rarely seen at Hollywood’s biggest night — was accentuated by matching wrap.

The look was accessorized with a necklace and tennis bracelet, both crafted of created diamonds, set in 18-karat white gold, from Swarovski’s Galaxy collection. Both pieces made their debut at the 2024 Oscars.

Jennifer Lawrence is known for being a very free-spirited personality. She has an incredible sense of humor which has helped her become an iconic figure in media outside of her career as an actress. Back at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival, Celine Song’s debut feature, “Past Lives,” premiered to rave reviews and early speculation about its awards chances. That turned out to be prescient. One year later, “Past Lives” is a 2024 Oscars Best Picture nominee, while Song is a nominee for Best Original Screenplay. So with the 2024 Sundance Film Festival at its end, what better time than now to speculate about what next year’s “Past Lives” will be? Whether anything on 2024’s Sundance roster can scale those heights is up for debate, but plenty of promising titles could compete for acting and screenplay prizes. The documentary lineup was robust this year, which makes sense: Six of the last 10 Best Documentary Feature Film winners got their start at Sundance.

The Sundance Film Festival is regarded as one of the most prestigious independent film festivals, where filmmakers have been premiering their movies and documentaries since 1984.
The festival was founded in 1978 by Sterling Van Wagenen, the head of Robert Redford’s company Wildwood, and John Earle of the Utah Film Commission under the name Utah/US Film Festival to attract more filmmakers to Utah.
Redford founded the Sundance Institute in 1981 to foster independence, risk-taking, and new voices in American film. That year, 10 emerging filmmakers were invited to the Sundance Resort in the mountains of Utah, where they worked with leading writers, directors and actors to develop their original independent projects.
By 1984, the festival had established itself and was officially renamed the Sundance Film Festival after Redford’s character in his 1969 film Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. That year, the Grand Jury Prize in Dramatics was awarded to Old Enough, an...

Since helming the Academy Award-nominated “Winter’s Bone” in 2010, Debra Granik has enjoyed shifting between a further dabble into feature-length filmmaking (“Leave No Trace”) in addition to documentary work (“Stray Dog”), which, when coupled with her eclectic decades-strong filmography clearly showcases an overabundance of ability and flair for skillfully adapting to any subject that comes her way. Another comfortable entry on her resume exists in “Conbody Vs Everybody, “a six-part docu-series with a concept unlike anything she’s tackled prior while continuing to demonstrate her knack for creating something compelling while also supremely relevant to this day and age.

For the first time in the 96 years of the Academy Awards, three of the 10 films that received Best Picture nominations were directed by women. Greta Gerwig's "Barbie" (the blockbuster sensation of 2023), Celine Song's "Past Lives" (my personal choice for the best film of the entire year), and Justine Triet's "Anatomy of a Fall" (the most complex movie of the year) all received Best Picture nominations, and all three are incredibly well-deserved.
As Variety points out, 591 movies had been nominated for Oscars before this year's nominees were announced. In that 95-year span, it's been exceptionally rare for women to have directed two movies nominated for Best Picture:
Only four years have included two films directed by women among the best picture nominees: Lone Scherfig's ["An Education"] and Kathryn Bigelow's "The Hurt Locker" (2009), Lisa Cholodenko's "The Kids Are All Right" and Debra Granik's "Winter's Bone" (2010), Chloé Zhao...

Three female directors saw their movies nab Best Picture nominations Tuesday morning, the first time that’s occurred in Oscar’s 96-year history: Celine Song with Past Lives, Great Gerwig with Barbie and Justine Triet with Anatomy of a Fall.
For a fifth consecutive year, at least one of the Best Picture nominees was directed by a woman.
In the directing category, Triet becomes the ninth woman to be nominated in the category. She is the only female filmmaker this year, joined by Martin Scorsese (Killers of the Flower Moon), Christopher Nolan (Oppenheimer), Yorgos Lanthimos (Poor Things) and Jonathan Glazer (The Zone of Interest).
Previously, only four years counted two Best Picture noms from female filmmakers: 2009 for Lone Scherfig’s An Education and Kathryn Bigelow’s The Hurt Locker, 2010 for Lisa Cholodenko’s The Kids Are All Right and Debra Granik’s Winter’s Bone, 2020 with Chloé Zhao’s Nomadland and...

Women filmmakers hit a milestone with this year’s 2024 Oscar nominations.
For the first time in history, three of the 10 movies nominated for best picture — Justine Triet’s “Anatomy of a Fall,” Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” and Celine Song’s “Past Lives” — were directed by a female auteur, the most recognized in the Academy Awards’ 96-year history.
The other best picture nominees are: “American Fiction,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Maestro,” “Oppehneimer,” “The Holdovers,” “Poor Things,” and “The Zone of Interest.”

Put your pencils down, and pass your ballots to the front. The nominations voting period for the 96th Academy Awards is now closed. The latest influences on the race came from the Critics Choice Awards and the Golden Globes, where Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” topped both groups. However, Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” and Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Poor Things” has shown considerable strength, and films such as Alexander Payne’s “The Holdovers” and Justine Triet’s “Anatomy of a Fall” are picking up momentum.
Variety spoke with dozens of voters from all of the Academy’s branches, asking what films and performances were resonating with members and their acquaintances.
Here are eight things I’ve learned from discussions with AMPAS members.
AMPAS could see a record-breaking showing in best picture for female directors.

For four decades, Sundance has maintained a reputation as one of the most important film festivals in America for independent filmmakers from around the globe. To commemorate its 40th anniversary in 2024 and the enormity (and reciprocity) of that cultural footprint, festival leadership set a series of restoration screenings to highlight many of the most memorable films programmed throughout its history.
“When you look at the way the independent film movement has evolved and changed over the years, from the maturation of an industry and the opportunities that artists have found, to the way that an audience has been built around the work, you see a festival that has evolved alongside it,” says John Nein, senior programmer and director of strategic initiatives.

The fourth installment of HBO’s True Detective series is poised to be the spookiest yet. Set in the remote town of Ennis, Alaska, Night Country follows former partners Liz Danvers and Evangeline Navarro as they investigate the disappearance of eight researchers from a remote facility. The pair have a tense past, not only with each other, but with others in their small town.
True Detective: Night Country marks Jodie Foster’s first television appearance since the ’70s – not counting her handful of voiceover and narration guest roles in the ’90s and early ’00s – though certainly not her first time starring in a thriller. Foster is joined by a number of other talented actors, including Kali Reis, Fiona Shaw, and Christopher Eccleston.
Here’s everyone you need to know in True Detective: Night Country, and where you’ve seen them before.

Jennifer Lawrence was willing to go to great lengths to prepare for her role in Winter’s Bone. But she initially acquired the part for doing something in the auditions that most actors weren’t willing to.

Lawrence was willing to do whatever it took to be cast in the feature Winter’s Bone. The 2010 drama saw the Oscar winner playing an Ozark teenager looking after her younger siblings. The movie was directed by Debra Granik, who felt Lawrence stood out immediately compared to the other actors. Granik noted that many of the actors Lawrence competed with wore makeup for the coveted role.
“I think a lot of those young women showed up in skimpy outfits because they were taught that that is what gets noticed in Hollywood,” Granik once told the Ocean County Register.

It's pretty common for actors to be asked to change some part of themselves in order to better fit a role, ranging in severity from wearing prosthetics to cutting hair, and sometimes they're asked to modify themselves a little more drastically. When it came to being cast in "The Hunger Games," producers wanted rising young actor Jennifer Lawrence to change herself in order to look more like their idea of Katniss Everdeen, the movie's hero. She refused, and she had some pretty sound reasons for doing so.
In an interview with SciFiNow from 2013, Lawrence explained that there was one request that was just too much for her to agree to, and that's saying something considering she completely changed her body structure training in archery for these very films. Lawrence is known for really giving her all to roles, learning to skin a squirrel for "Winter's Bone" and training in ballet for "Red Sparrow,...

January 2024 will mark the eighth anniversary of Jennifer Lawrence’s second Best Comedy/Musical Actress Golden Globe victory for “Joy,” which, having followed her previous lead and supporting triumphs for “Silver Linings Playbook” (2013) and “American Hustle” (2014), made the 25-year-old the youngest three-time film acting honoree in the organization’s history. That particular hot streak ended there, but she may be set for a comeback at the upcoming 81st Golden Globe Awards if enough voters favor her work in the raunchy summer flick “No Hard Feelings.” If she does end up adding another trophy to her vast collection, she will set several new precedents and tie her category’s record for most wins.
At this point, the only two women who have clinched three Best Comedy/Musical Actress Golden Globes are Rosalind Russell and Julie Andrews, who respectively reached the milestone in 1963 (“Gypsy”) and 1983 (“Victor/Victoria”). Russell had previously been lauded for...

Italian writer-director Emma Dante’s “Misericordia” has won the top prize at the Black Nights Film Festival in Tallinn, Estonia. Adapted from her own play, her third feature tells the story of a young man (Simone Zambelli) with learning difficulties, cared for by a group of sex workers on an island, protecting him from the cruelty of his abusive father. It’s a raw portrait of a marginalized group of people, mixing natural beauty of the locations with the grime of everyday existence.
Zambelli also took the award for best actor, for his role as the man-child at the center of the drama. The best actress prize was shared by Lubna Azabal, who plays a teacher in Jawad Rhalib’s “Amal,” and Kim Higelin, who stars in the controversial French drama “Consent,” directed by Vanessa Filho, as a teenager having an affair with a manipulative and exploitative 50-year-old writer.

Last year, we wrote about the pleasure of finally seeing character actor Dale Dickey - so memorable in roles in films including Hell And High Water and Winter’s Bone - finally get her teeth into a lead character, with Max Walker-Silverman’s gentle drama A Love Song. Now she’s back in a very different role, in Karl R Hearne’s The G, as foul-mouthed, no-nonsense gran Ann, who has vengeance on her mind after a corrupt legal guardian (Bruce Ramsay) steals her property and targets her loved ones. Spirited away to a care home, she begins to take matters into her own hands as her granddaughter Emma (Romaine Denis) also sets about trying to liberate her gran - who she calls “The G” - leading to a taut and enjoyably complex thriller.

November is the month of thankfulness, so why not be thankful for some great independent cinema?
As the end of the year approaches, new films arrive in theaters at a rapid pace with big blockbusters, seasonal holiday films, and major Oscar contenders all vying for those juicy November and December slots. This month alone, some highly anticipated films include “American Fiction,” “Dream Scenario,” “Leave the World Behind,” “May December,” “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes,” “Napoleon,” and the Disney Film “Wish.” On streaming, new movies skew towards the seasonal holiday variet with mountains of Christmas rom-coms coming to Netflix for you to enjoy and/or dread. It’s a lean month for new original content on HBO/Max. November will see the return of two scripted series in Julia and Rap Sh!t, both of which are debuting their respective second seasons, but this month’s fresh highlight is likely to be Bookie, a new comedy series from the partnership of The Big Bang Theory creator Chuck Lorre, and Nick Bakay. The show tracks an LA bookie called Danny (Sebastian Maniscalco), whose business is in peril as California movies to legalize sports gambling.
Elsewhere in November, there quite a few interesting documentaries to keep an eye on, and two that jump out as “must watch”. The first is Albert Brooks: Defending My Life, which chronicles the aging comedian’s life and career. The second is the previously-released Little Richard: I Am Everything, which tries to peel back the whitewashed canon of Richard Penniman in a true...

Celine Song’s “Past Lives,” Ira Sachs’ “Passages,” Tina Satter’s “Reality,” Kelly Reichardt’s “Showing Up” and A.V. Rockwell’s “A Thousand and One” have been nominated as best feature of 2023 for the 33rd annual Gotham Awards, which announced its nominations on Tuesday morning in New York City.
In a year in which the Gothams eliminated its longstanding budget cap and allowed films of any budget to enter the race, its nominating committees went small with a thoroughly indie lineup of nominees. Still, bigger films slipped into the Outstanding Supporting Performance category with nominations for Ryan Gosling in “Barbie” and Penelope Cruz in “Ferrari.”
In the Best International Feature category, the nominees are “All of Us Strangers,” “Anatomy of a Fall,” “Poor Things,” “Totem” and “The Zone of Interest.” The nominated documentaries are “20 Days in Mariupol,” “Against the Tide,” “Apolonia, Apolonia,” “Four Daughters” and “Our Body.”

Thomasin McKenzie has a doozy of a day, the kind she’ll never forget in the first trailer for “Eileen.” Set during a grim 1964 Massachusetts winter, the William Oldroyd-directed noir concerns a young and impressionable secretary who becomes understandably enraptured by a new counselor (Anne Hathaway) at the prison where she works. The trailer doesn’t spell out what diabolical doings will be done, but the implication is Hathaway goes full femme fatale.
Alongside its two top-billed stars, “Eileen” features Shea Whigham, Siobhan Fallon Hogan and Owen Teague (who will soon headline “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” alongside Freya Allen).
Based on Ottessa Moshfegh’s novel of the same name and produced by Fifth Season, “Eileen” debuted to positive reviews at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. Neon picked up the picture and plans to give it a year end awards season push. Audiences can expect a...

Elvis isn’t dead. In fact, he’s very much alive and well after Baz Luhrmann‘s “Elvis” starring Austin Butler and, now, Sofia Coppola‘s “Priscilla,” featuring Jacob Elordi as The King.
However, as you can guess by the latter movie’s title, Coppola’s focus isn’t on Elvis but rather on the singer’s wife Priscilla, whom he was married to from 1967 until 1973. Coppola’s slow, purposeful drama puts the young Priscilla front and center and explores her complex relationship with Elvis — a relationship fraught with passion, power, power imbalance, and, frankly, abuse. The film from A24 lives and dies by its female lead and, thankfully, Cailee Spaeny soars in a breakout role as the titular Priscilla. And critics agree.
Marlow Stern (Rolling Stone) noted: “Spaeny, who is 25 but makes for a convincing teenager, is an absolute marvel, nailing Priscilla’s complicated mélange of emotions — the wide-eyed wonderment and youthful desire,...
