Indian streamer SonyLIV has unveiled the cast and a first look for its magnum opus series “Freedom at Midnight.”
Based on the 1975 non-fiction book by Larry Collins and Dominique Lapierre, the political drama delves into India’s independence movement, weaving together untold tales and critical moments from the era when the country’s then British colonial rulers partitioned the country into India and Pakistan.

India’s Sandeep Singh will direct “The Pride of Bharat – Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj,” a biopic of revered 17th century Indian ruler Shivaji Bhonsle.

Ritesh Sidhwani and Farhan Akhtar’s Indian studio Excel Entertainment has boarded Danish Renzu’s film “Songs of Paradise” as a producer.
“Songs of Paradise” tells the story of the first female singer at Radio Kashmir, a radio station in the valley of Kashmir, a paradise on earth marred by conflict. The film is inspired by the music and songs of Raj Begum (1927-2016). It explores Begum’s journey of becoming a singer at a time when women had limited rights. It highlights the people who opened doors for female artists in the valley and helped them break barriers and stereotypes.
Saba Azad (“Rocket Boys”) plays the lead role. The cast also includes Soni Razdan (“Pippa”), Zain Khan Durrani (“Mukhbir: The Story of a Spy”), Taaruk Raina (“Mismatched”), Sheebha Chaddha (“The Trial”), Shishir Sharma (“Kazi”) and Lillette Dubey (“Made in Heaven”).
Producers include Sidhwani, Akhtar, Shafat Qazi, Renzu and Kassim Jagmagia.

A galaxy of 42 emerging creative talents from across the U.S., U.K. and India have been unveiled as the 2023 BAFTA Breakthrough cohort.
The selected talents have worked on some of the most lauded projects over the last several months including “The Last of Us,” “1923,” “Blue Jean,” “Rye Lane,” “Rocket Boys” and “Joyland.”
Breakthrough is BAFTA’s flagship new talent initiative in partnership with Netflix, drawn from creatives working in film, games and television. Awarded to those in the midst of, or on the cusp of their breakthrough moment, the year-long initiative includes one-to-one meetings and career guidance, full voting membership, access to BAFTA events and screenings, as well as networking events, both in the U.K. and internationally.
This year’s cohort comprises creatives spanning craft specialisms from hair and make up, production, editing and games design, to performance, directing and cinematography and is from diverse ethnic backgrounds and abilities.

The 54th International Film Festival of India (Iffi), Goa, concluded on Tuesday with Hollywood veteran Michael Douglas accepting the Satyajit Ray lifetime achievement award for excellence in cinema.

“It’s a tremendous honor to receive this award, a career life achievement. The project is backed by some of the biggest names in Bollywood, including the “Dangal” director Nitesh Tiwari and “Break Point” filmmaker Ashwini Iyer Tiwari’s Earthsky Pictures, Ronnie Screwvala’s RSVP, Siddharth Roy Kapur’s Roy Kapur Films and Star Studios.
The film is about today’s youth and their dilemmas, the thrills, risks, and romance of embarking on a new life path and chasing one’s dreams, and aims to capture the zeitgeist and entrepreneurial spirit of young India. The film will follow newly-wed immigrant Fauzia, whose mother-in-law Ruxana keeps her captive. She finds out that everything she had been told about her husband Ali was a lie and loses hope until a French tutor, Laurie, is hired to teach her the basics.
