With the next generation of video games, things are more aligned with the open-world genre than a linear narrative. The upcoming Tomb Raider and Resident Evil games could share the same fate. Popular titles like Call of Duty took the liberty to experiment by stepping outside their traditional approach. It turns out fans are comfortable with the linear storyline unless they are playing Warzone.
Capcom’s franchise switched their gameplay from third-person perspective (Tpp) to first-person perspective (Fpp) in 2017 with Resident Evil 7, which was the first full-length game to use their in-house engine. None of the Tr games has done anything like that, nor has it explored open-world concepts before. However, Rise of the Tomb Raider could be considered a symbiosis between an open-world and linear narrative.
Tomb Raider Being Open-World Doesn’t Sit Well with Fans
Lara from Tomb Raider was originally going to be a character named Fletcher.

Following various cuts and divestments, troubled videogame firm Embracer Group is splitting into three separate companies.
In the latest shakeup at Embracer, the embattled Swedish holding company is to split into three separate entities. All three will be listed on the Swedish stock market, but none will carry the old Embracer name – and tellingly, none will be headed up by its CEO, Lars Wingefors.
The first of the three, called Middle-earth Enterprises & Friends, will be a “creative powerhouse of Aaa game development,” according to Embracer’s announcement, and will be the entity that holds the valuable rights to Tomb Raider and The Lord Of The Rings.
The second company, Coffee Stain & Friends, will focus on indie and mid-budget games for PC and mobile; the third, Asmodee, will concentrate on publishing tabletop games.
It’s a drastic-sounding move, and a sign of just how difficult the past year has been for the once industry-dominating firm.

The company that owns IP rights to the Lord of the Rings franchise is dividing its business.
Embracer Group has unveiled plans to split into three operations: games publisher Asmodee Group, indie gaming label Coffee Stain & Friends and Middle-earth Enterprises & Friends, which will house the Lord of the Rings and Tomb Raider rights.
Each company will be publicly listed on the Nasdaq Stockholm exchange, but Middle-earth Enterprises & Friends will remain within the current listed Embracer Group, which will be renamed. Embracer has also entered into a €900M ($959M) financing agreement with Asmodee, which will partly go on repaying debts.
Embracer’s largest shareholder, CEO Lars Wingefors, is planning on a “new long-term ownership structure” and will remain “a long-term, active, committed and supportive owner of all three entities.” Shareholders representing more than 50% of the capital and votes are supporting the plan.

Given their close-knit relationship as global entertainment industries, gaming and the movies have long had a symbiotic connection. Movie tie-in games, for instance, have been a popular feature in gaming for decades, with numerous short-form releases over the years attempting to distil linear, cinematic storylines into interactive ones — albeit with varying success.
A Brief History of Gaming and the Movies
Of course, it’s not been uncommon over the years for studios to churn out poor quality movie-tie in titles that barely represent the characters and narratives we’ve fallen for on the big screen. However, there have been some outright successes and unexpected releases in alternative gaming genres.
In addition to being video game franchises, movies have even inspired online casino games and plenty of other activities throughout the iGaming sector. IP such as King Kong, Jurassic Park and even The Lord of The Rings have all been transformed...

Actor Walton Goggins was given the responsibility of portraying The Ghoul and boy did he do a fantastic job!

When you first see The Ghoul in “Fallout,” the most pronounced feature of Walton Goggins’ character is what’s missing. Just under the brim of his weathered cowboy hat and just above his wrinkled upper lip — you know, where his nose should be — there isn’t one. You can see the narrow nostril-dividing tissue, but there are no nostrils to divide. Instead, there’s just an A-shaped hole in his face. A cavity. An absence. So even though it’s obvious the handsome charmer from “Justified” is there, buried under a pound of latex, Prime Video viewers may not realize the physical demands of a role visibly defined by what’s been removed.
“I can’t see so well. I mean, I could see, but your periphery is gone,” Goggins said in an interview with IndieWire. “I’ve got these things over my teeth, so it’s hard to talk.

The portrayal of women in games has been a controversial topic of discussion for quite some time. However, it becomes confusing when an upcoming installment in Xbox’s Fable franchise has been criticized for making its female lead unattractive, and it’s unclear what developers have to do to satisfy every gamer.
Stellar Blade and Fable Are Facing the Opposite Problems
Stellar Blade has been criticized for its portrayal of the female lead character.
It only took a gameplay showcase and a demo for Stellar Blade to receive negative attention since most gamers seem to be talking about how the lead character looks rather than what her abilities would be. Shift Up’s PS5 exclusive was set to somewhat follow the footsteps of Bayonetta,...

At this year’s SXSW, a small corner of Austin was transformed into the world of Filly from the upcoming Prime Video show Fallout, adapted from the popular video game franchise by Bethesda Studios. At the activation, we met some of the cast and crew behind the show and asked them everyone’s burning questions about the highly anticipated series.
One of the exciting things about Fallout compared to other video game adaptations is that it presents a new story with entirely new characters. This will allow the show to give something new to viewers, whether or not they are familiar with the games.
Actor Aaron Moten, who plays Maximus, a squire of the Brotherhood of Steel, said about the show’s approach: “I think it’s exciting because whether you’re the greatest fan of the amazing video game series or you’re new to it, I think we...

Fictional secret agent James Bond has gotten into his fair share of scrapes and close calls, but broadly speaking, the high-profile actors who have played him on screen have been pretty safe stepping into the character's expensive shoes. The Bond films have become famous for their jaw-dropping and boundary-pushing stunts, but those moments are the result of teams of people who design and choreograph everything to be as safe as possible for both the stars and their stunt doubles. The James Bond franchise is one of the most lucrative and longest-running film series of all time, but in its very first movie, we nearly lost its first lead actor in a gruesome death that would have robbed movie lovers of some legendary performances and ripped away the franchise's potential before it even got started.
In 1962's "Dr. No," Sean Connery's Bond notices he's being tailed by three assassins while driving up a mountain road.

It’s not often that you think about the theory that there might be someone who looks exactly like you somewhere in another part of the world and none of you know that either one exists since the Doppleganger theory is very rarely witnessed by anybody.

I remember watching heist movies as a kid and thinking to myself, Why would anyone risk their life for gold? Why can’t people just work? But then I grew up and began to understand how this capitalist world works. I’d rather that this does not become another one of my commentaries on human greed. However, I can’t help but wonder: if I had the resources to do so, would I go on a mind-boggling, life-threatening hunt for treasure through the ruins of the Mayan or Aztec civilizations? I have played the Tomb Raider and Uncharted games, but would I do it for a fortune?
While the possibility is quite tempting to think about, I am quite lazy and will never move beyond the stage where I get off my couch and start planning. There are folks like us who like making money the way society wants us to,...

The ‘very male-gazed orientation’ of the 1980s version of Red Sonja will be a thing of the past in the remake, says Matilda Lutz.
Fantasy adventure Red Sonja emerged in 1985, three years after 1982’s Conan The Barbarian and around the time of the unexpectedly daft Conan The Destroyer. Red Sonja, directed by Destroyer’s Richard Fleischer, cashed in on that series’ popularity and also featured its star, Arnold Schwarzenegger, alongside 80s icon Brigitte Nielsen who starred as the titular female warrior.
There has been talk of a reboot of the movie for years, but it seems to be a project that has taken forever to bring to the screen – and we’re not just talking about the hold-ups caused by strikes and pandemics. For well over a decade, various attempts have been made to get the film up and running, with creative talent such as Robert Rodriguez, Rose McGowan, Simon West,...

A reboot of Red Sonja spent nearly fifteen years in development hell before going into production in 2022 with director M.J. Bassett (Solomon Kane) at the helm. Before Bassett signed on, the project had passed through the hands of directors Robert Rodriguez, Simon West, Bryan Singer, and Joey Soloway, with Hannah John-Kamen, Rose McGowan, and Amber Heard being considered for the lead role. Matilda Lutz ended up starring in the film, and while we still don’t know when we’ll get to see her version of the title character in action, she did talk about the making of the film (and the metal bikini she had to wear in it) during an interview with Collider.
Lutz said she had a great experience working on Red Sonja, getting the chance to do stunts and horseback riding, to work with Bassett. She added, “What I think is different from what we know...

Angelina Jolie wanted to remain healthy for her family Angelina Jolie | Axelle/Bauer-Griffin/FilmMagic
Jolie was well known for being a bit of a daredevil. The action star felt it was important to perform her own stunts in feature films. But as the years went on, Jolie eventually found herself becoming a mother. Afterwards, the actor didn’t get the same thrills doing action scenes that she used to.
“I did have a moment where I thought about my life. I had the babies about a year before filming and then I took 12 months off. This action scene was part of my big return. I was hanging off that ledge thinking, ‘What am I doing up here?...

The Brit crime comedy “Down Terrace” was a hit with critics back in 2009. Made on a shoestring budget and shot over a little more than a week, it was lapped up for giving a uniquely dark and hilarious twist to the standard gangster flick while adding splashes of U.K. kitchen-sink social realism into the mix. The film also set up its director Ben Wheatley — making his feature debut after years working on TV, commercials and shorts — for cinematic greatness.
Fifteen years on and Wheatley has more than staked out his territory as one of the U.K.’s most exciting — and unexpected — filmmakers. After landing “cult director” status thanks to his “Down Terrace” follow-ups — the gritty psychological horror “Kill List,” murderous black comedy “Sightseers” and trippy period feature “A Field in England” — he then upped the stakes (and A-list stars) with J.G. Ballard adaptation “High Rise” (starring Tom Hiddleston...

“Lord of the Rings” owner Embracer revealed its Q3 results were boosted by licensing revenue from the Tolkien IP despite being lower than expected overall.
Embracer, a Swedish gaming conglomerate who snapped up the rights to “Lord of the Rings” two years ago, has undergone a severe restructuring program over the past year, which has seen the company shut down or dispose of dozens of games studios and titles and lay off hundreds of staff, resulting in aftershocks that have reverberated throughout the games industry.
Its latest report, published Thursday, the company revealed it had cut 8% of its global workforce. That number likely does not include those working on a freelance basis.
Despite this, Wingefors admitted the company is unlikely to reach its target of lowering its net debt to Sek 8 billion ($761 million) by March 31. He warned that Embracer still has “a few larger structured divestment processes ongoing that could strengthen our balance sheet.

Video game consoles are a hell of a thing when you think about it. It’s one big gamble where we hope that we can keep throwing money at it and we’ll constantly be rewarded with more fun and enjoyment. If you bought a Switch during its first year and you’re still playing it now, then congratulations; you and Nintendo succeeded. On the other hand, you might have a Wii-u sitting around, collecting dust. Sorry about that.
While there are plenty of console and handheld success stories in the industry, there are those companies who put a bunch of resources together, shoved it out the door, and then winced as it suddenly collided with reality. Consoles that failed for one reason or twenty others and only exist as nostalgia mixed with schadenfreude.

In the spring of 2022, Embracer Group was a games industry colossus, with its market valuation sitting at almost $10bn. By this point, the Swedish company owned some of the biggest properties and studios around, having recently purchased the rights to the likes of Tomb Raider, Deus Ex and Thief from Japan’s Square Enix, as well as several studios involved in making them, including Crystal Dynamics and Eidos Montreal.
The firm also had a wealth of other major names crowded under its banner, including rights to The Lord Of The Rings, comic book publisher Dark Horse Media, Gearbox Software, creators of the Borderlands series, and Asmodee, a publisher of card and tabletop games.

Black Widow's track record in the Marvel Cinematic Universe hasn't always been flawless. The highs ("Captain America: The Winter Soldier") were certainly high, but the lows ("Avengers: Age of Ultron") were just as low. Still, the operative otherwise known as Natasha Romanoff was always the McU's secret weapon. She practically ran away with every film she appeared in, and for a large part of the franchise's initial run, she was one of the few female characters making a consistent impact. But as Johansson continued to turn in solid supporting performances, it was hard to ignore the fact that she'd yet to get a chance to stand on her own.
By the time Marvel finally delivered a solo Black Widow project, it felt like way too little, too late. "Black Widow" found itself somewhere in the middle of the franchise's 15-year output: it did its title character justice, in a way,...
