The infamous boat party scene was re-created from real footage that exists of Jason Derek Brown. When they filmed it in Utah, it was freezing cold and the extras and actors had to suck ice cubes in between takes so that their breath wouldn't show up in the shots.
The film was shot primarily in Utah, in 22 days during the height of the pandemic.
Tom Pelphrey was cast off of the strength of his performance in Ozark. Director Matthew Gentile said in an interview with CriterionCast that he chose him because he had a physicality that reminded him of his favorite actor, Toshiro Mifune.
