Somehow Cavett got Brando to appear, no doubt offering him an opportunity to discuss the cause of improving the life of Native-Americans: the Indians. What might have been an opportunity to explore a serious topic was lost as Cavett shills for ratings by asking the softball questions that Brando abhors. Indeed, Brando does a quick analysis of Cavett's acting skills as host of a talk show. When allowed, Brando delivers soft punches that have the impact of body blows. Thank you Decades TV for showing this episode. It's sad to watch this and realize how the usefulness of TV has been co-opted more and more into the drivel machine depicted in the movie Network.

The Dick Cavett Show (1973)
Episode Date: June 12, 1973
This episode of The Dick Cavett Show had several guests but the biggest was of course Marlon Brando. The great actor appeared on the program after a six hour phone call with Cavett but it's clear that the actor wasn't here to talk about his movies. Instead he wants to discuss the rights of Indians and the supporting guests that come out towards the end of the show discuss various changes they'd like to see happen.
This episode was recorded well after Brando refused his 1972 Oscar for THE GODFATHER and that subject is discussed with the actor talking about if he regretted doing what he did. That's pretty much all he wants to talk about in regards to the film and even glosses over questions about LAST TANGO IN Paris, which was in theaters at the time. He and Cavett go back and forth about what acting is but it's clear that the host isn't wanting to upset Brando or say anything offensive.
For the most part this is a pretty entertaining episode thanks to how bizarre it is. Brando was never a fan of interviews and that's clear here. Sure, it would have been great if he answered the questions about the two films but that's not really Brando, is it? The actor is pretty much himself, his on the show to discuss one thing and he wants to keep it on target. Still, the interview is quite entertaining.
