Amber Sealey’s Out of My Mind had a Sundance Film Festival audience feeling all the feels Friday as the Disney+ title had its world premiere at the Library Center Theatre.
The film casts first-time performer Phoebe-Ray Taylor as Melody Brooks, a sixth grader navigating school as a nonverbal wheelchair user with cerebral palsy. With the help of assistive technology and her devoted allies, Melody shows that what she has to say is more important than how she says it in a fight to be put in a mainstream classroom.
Taylor stars alongside Luke Kirby, Rosemarie DeWitt, Judith Light, Michael Chernus, Courtney Taylor and others. Jennifer Aniston, who offers her voiceover talents through narration, took to Instagram Stories to praise the film on the occasion of its world premiere. (Aniston was not present in Park City but her history with Sundance dates back to The Good Girl and Friends with Money.

Elijah Wood may be having a bit of a moment with "Yellowjackets," but it's far from his only headline-grabbing role. Wood has been steadily working on our screens since the late 1980s, with a varied career that includes acting in TV and movies, doing voice work, producing and writing, and more.
While Wood definitely has become a permanent fixture in pop culture thanks to his role in "The Lord of the Rings," his career is much more eclectic and varied than just the blockbusters. He's the kind of actor who seems to delight in taking unusual and creative projects, with roles ranging from outright comedy and family-friendly hits to thrillers, dark dramas, and everything in between. Let's take a look back at some of his big-screen highlights over the years.

In January of 2022, /Film published a list, ranking feature films about notorious serial killer Ted Bundy. On that list, compiled by author Bee Scott, were 10 films and TV specials about Bundy, revealing a deep and abiding fascination with the sociopath and his crimes. The TV miniseries "The Deliberate Stranger," starring Mark Harmon, depicted Bundy as a charming "face in the crowd" kind of character. Matthew Bright's 2002 feature "Ted Bundy" leaned in a more lascivious direction, depicting the man as a classic "crazed, sex-starved lunatic" archetype.
The most recent Ted Bundy film was Amber Sealy's "No Man of God," a film about Bundy after his arrest and imprisonment. From 1985 up until his execution in 1989, Ted Bundy was visited regularly by an FBI profiler named Bill Hagmaier, who was tasked with something that was novel at the time: figuring out what makes a serial killer tick. When she makes a sudden and miraculous recovery, her attempts to have her clone decommissioned fail and lead to a court-mandated duel to the death.
Aaron Paul and Beulah Koale also star in the film produced by Stearns, XYZ and Resolute Films and Entertainment.

Alison Braver, a former Team U.S.A. Yes, that headline sounds like the plot of a surprisingly mundane dream you once had and, yes, it's completely true. Allison Baver, former Olympic speed skater and the founder of Allison Baver Entertainment (shocker), fraudulently applied for $10 million of Covid relief funds and funneled some of those funds into Elijah Wood's production company for his 2021 film "No Man of God." As the 2006 off-kilter romantic comedy starring Will Ferrell "Stranger Than Fiction" once posited, sometimes the truth is stranger than fiction. And in this particular case, not only is it stranger, it also boils...

If your household isn’t wall-to-wall Elf for the entirety of this month, then a) that must be nice and quiet. Can I come and stay? and b) you must be on the look-out for some alternative film options. Find them below in our handy guide to what’s premiering daily on Sky Cinema in the UK in December. Yes, there’s Christmas fare, including something about an animated cow, Mel Gibson playing a gun-toting Santa Claus, and two Sky Original festive films Last Train to Christmas and A Christmas Number One, but there’s much more besides.
Our highlights include monster mash-up Godzilla vs. Kong, Lin-Manuel Miranda musical In the Heights, excellent Thomas Vinterberg drinking drama Another Round (Mads Mikkelsen’s closing scene is worth the price of admission alone), and The Suicide Squad, which needs no introduction round these parts. There’s also the Peter Rabbit sequel for...

Exclusive: Amber Sealey has signed on to direct McFarland Entertainment’s Nod If You Understand, on the heels of the Tribeca-premiering No Man of God, which told the true story of Ted Bundy’s final days.
The thriller heading into production next year will tell the true story of the relationship between heroic Nwa stewardess Tina Mucklow, the mysterious hijacker known as Db Cooper, and the only unsolved case of air piracy in the history of commercial aviation.
When Cooper boards Nwa Flight 305 with a bomb on Thanksgiving Eve, 1971, Mucklow must cleverly negotiate his demands and the conflicting objectives of the FBI and airline, to save 42 lives. After extorting $200,000 in ransom and demanding the crew return him to the stormy skies with a series of very specific and life-threatening flying instructions, Cooper does the unthinkable, parachuting out of the aircraft with the money. Serial killers, both real and fictitious, have long been a source of fascination with the public, and of course by extension filmmakers, who often seek to plumb these depths for the sake of dark entertainment. In 1980, Ted Bundy was sentenced to death by electrocution. In the years that followed, he agreed to disclose the details of his crimes, but only to one man. During the early days of the agency’s criminal profiling unit, FBI analyst Bill Hagmaier met with the incarcerated Ted Bundy in the hopes of understanding the psychology of the serial killer and providing closure for the victim’s families. As Hagmaier delves into Bundy’s dark and twisted mind, a strange and complicated relationship develops that neither man expected. Based on actual transcripts of interviews between FBI analyst Bill Hagmaier and the incarcerated Ted Bundy, No Man of God is “nothing short of riveting. It is a must-see” (Reel News Daily). Today, Amber Sealey's thriller No Man of God...

Last week, three studios made major announcements that suggest Premium VOD income isn’t enough to prioritize it over other platforms; this week, the VOD charts suggests a drop in the momentum toward home viewing options. This may be temporary, with “Candyman” (Universal/$19.99) scheduled for release September 16, but Disney will present the rest of its 2021 movie slate as initial theatrical exclusives. Universal placed “Halloween Kills” day-and-date on Peacock October 15, and Paramount announced that it would replace chairman and and CEO Jim Gianopulos with the more Paramount+-friendly Brian Robbins, currently head of Nickelodeon.
Warner Bros. provides same-day HBO Max access for its theatrical releases, but James Wan’s “Malignant,” a $40 million-budgeted horror film, mustered only 735,000 viewings (per Samba TV’s estimate). Clint Eastwood’s “Cry Macho” this weekend and next month’s “Dune” should do much better. Disney’s “Free Guy,” just announced for September 28 PVOD, should also find high interest.

Elijah Wood has an elaborate dance to perform in Amber Sealey's "No Man of God." The actor and producer plays FBI agent Bill Hagmaier, who goes toe-to-toe with serial killer Ted Bundy (Luke Kirby) before his execution. The two engage in long conversations without revealing all their cards to each other. A lot is spoken and unspoken by the two men on the opposite sides of the law. The same applies to Wood and Kirby.
"No Man of God," which is now on VOD, is another film produced by Wood. For the last 11 years, Wood's production company...

On a Labor Day weekend when “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” exploded to a record $90 million initial four- day gross, Disney also expanded Premium VOD platforms for its $100 million-plus box office “Jungle Cruise” ($29.99). As with other PVOD titles, it’s making a strong debut on multiple charts after an initial Disney+ home exclusive.
“Jungle Cruise” leads at Vudu, which favors higher-priced titles with its revenue tally. Among transactional charts, iTunes has it as #3, with GooglePlay placing it at #5. “The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard” (Lionsgate/$5.99) repeats at #1 at both iTunes and Google, and at #5 is the highest non-pvod films at Vudu. All of this reinforces that Disney can maximize returns from multiple outlets even as films still do well in theaters.

Elijah Wood, best known for his turn as Frodo in Peter Jackson‘s “Lord of the Rings” trilogy, has been working as an actor now for nearly 20 years, and his work has grown increasingly eclectic over the past decade. From his performances in shows such as the bizarrely funny “Wilfred”, horror films like “Maniac” and voice work for the charmingly offbeat animated series “Over the Garden Wall,” he’s had no shortage of interesting career turns.

Written by Kit Lesser and directed by Amber Sealey (No Light and No Land Anywhere), No Man of God takes the horrifying true crime case of Ted Bundy and contorts the lens in order to look at Bundy’s relationship with FBI analyst and profiler Bill Hagenmaier during his final years as a death row inmate.
It’s an intriguing concept and one I was very excited to sit down and watch. Elijah Wood (The Lord of the Rings Trilogy) plays Hagenmaier and Bundy is played by Luke Kirby, whom I personally know from his run in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel as Lenny Bruce. The majority of this movie is a character play between two men, a conversation, a back and forth. Seeing Kirby and Wood act their socks off is a joyous thing,...

Female directors had a better chance of having their documentaries screened at film festivals than their narrative features, according to a new study.
Women accounted for 42% of directors, writers, producers, executive producers, editors and cinematographers on documentaries that were featured in Sundance, SXSW, AFI, New York Film Festival and other annual celebrations of moviemaking. In contrast, they comprised 35% of those working on narrative features at those same festivals. The report, which was undertaken by San Diego State University’s Center for the Study of Women in Television and Film, examined 7,452 credits on 582 films that screened at 20 high-profile film festivals in the U.S. The report captured a year in which female filmmakers, like Sian Heder (“Coda”), Amber Sealey (“No Man of God”), Mariem Pérez Riera (“Rita Moreno: Just a Girl Who Decided to Go For It”) and Rebecca Hall (“Passing”), scored some of the biggest deals and best reviews of the film festival season.

“Respect” (United Artists/$19.99) was released on the big screen on August 13 to high praise for Jennifer Hudson’s portrayal of Aretha Franklin but a disappointing gross of $17 million in its first two weeks of play in over 3,200 theaters. That meant the film got an unusually quick transition to home platforms on August 27. Early results show the film could return a higher amount to the distributor that way than via its theater play.

Elijah Wood knows a thing or two about big movie franchises. The actor has enjoyed a lengthy, illustrious career but will likely forever be known for portraying lead hobbit Frodo Baggins in Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy.
So, as you might imagine, when Wood stopped by Entertainment Tonight to discuss his latest film, Ted Bundy story No Man of God, the saga of Middle-Earth came up. What’s more interesting, however, is that Wood was also up for discussing other big franchises he is interested in, including Star Wars, in which he has already provided his voice to the character of Jace Rucklin in Star Wars Resistance.
“I think that’s just inherently fun,” Wood said. “I haven’t had a chance to play in a giant sandbox in a while…Star Wars gets precedent because I’m a huge Star Wars fan. So more of that,...

There’s a moment in No Man Of God when Ted Bundy, the infamous serial killer who raped, mutilated and murdered 30 or more women and girls, is talking to a journalist, putting the blame for his crimes on Detective Comics, claiming that they led him into temptation. He has his hair slicked back, that toothy grin, eyes alternately flashing with wit or big and serious, that face the papers called handsome. He knows how to play to camera, but watching him from behind it is a young woman, and Amber Sealey’s camera drifts away from Bundy’s face to hers. This woman knows what he is. She sees through his bullshit as almost every woman always has – and yet, to date, very few have contributed to the telling of this story.

If there’s one thing that the world isn’t short of, it’s films about Ted Bundy. This one, however, is different. Everywhere that I have spent time with other critics of late, people have been talking about it excitedly: No Man Of God, one of the standout films of the year in any genre. Getting the UK première is quite a coup for Frightfest.
Despite the abundance of films and TV programmes out there, there’s still very little from a female perspective, and male directors persistently seem focused on the idea that there is a great mystery behind the infamous serial killer’s actions. This film, by contrast, seems less interested in him than in the obsession that other people have with him, and that’s what I put to director Amber Sealey when we met a few days before Frightfest.

Together, the lockdown drama from Bleecker Street, opens on 250 screens this weekend in a specialty market treading water and with little visibility on box office amid daily Covid headlines.
The trend continues of specialty films going wider faster and narrowing the window from theatrical to VOD in a nod to the chunk of its audience, mainly older, that feels more comfortable watching at home. The market is looking to a stream of fall product ahead of awards season, hoping the virus is more contained by then. Some good news offset the march of the Delta Variant this week as the Fda granted full approval to the Pfizer vaccine – shots in arms being key to an accelerated theatrical revival.

Real evil will always be a tantalizing go-to for storytellers, and in the case of notorious serial killer Ted Bundy, it’s meant at least nine at-bats across film and television for handsome, ambitious actors (from ‘80s-era heartthrob Mark Harmon to post-Disney Zac Efron) to twist looks, charisma and pathology into a portrait of chill, guy-next-door monstrosity.
Could Luke Kirby’s turn, as the death-row Bundy, be the best yet? Even if director Amber Sealey’s crisp, compelling indie docudrama “No Man of God” is the second Bundy film this year alone, not counting documentaries? Pardon the competitive shading to that question, but in the Hannibal Lecter era, screen madmen have mostly been muscle-flexing attempts at nerve-jangling one-upmanship, so it’s a comparison most films welcome.
And Bundy, convicted of murdering three women but certainly guilty of killing, raping and kidnapping countless more, has become a true-crime cottage industry, to...
Could Luke Kirby’s turn, as the death-row Bundy, be the best yet? Even if director Amber Sealey’s crisp, compelling indie docudrama “No Man of God” is the second Bundy film this year alone, not counting documentaries? Folks, I’m not sure if you’ve noticed, but Elijah Wood is making some of the best work he’s made in years, whether it’s behind the camera or in front. Why do we need more Ted Bundy movies?! We've seen enough, too many of them recently (including No Man of God as well). Chad Michael Murray stars in this as Bundy, along with Lin Shaye, Jake Hays, Marietta Melrose, and Holland Roden. The film focuses on the extensive FBI manhunt to find and apprehend "America's most infamous serial killer," around the time he was down in Florida killing more people. Scary stuff, as always. But this doesn't look it has much to offer that we haven't already seen. Official trailer (+ poster) for Daniel Farrands' Ted Bundy: American Boogeyman, from YouTube: A specter roams the highways of a gritty and decadent ...

It’s full-scream ahead once more for London’s go-to horror festival, with Arrow Video FrightFest jumping right back into the swing of things with a huge helping of new genre treats set to screen in Leicester Square this August bank holiday. From slasher staples to voodoo gangsters, and Nicolas Cage strapped into a self-destructing leather suit, it’s another ballsy line-up from the team that have been delivering buckets of the nasty stuff for over twenty years now.
Kicking off on the Thursday night with Neill Blomkamp’s hugely anticipated tech-horror Demonic (his first feature 2015’s Chappie), and bowing out on Monday in relentlessly bloody fashion with Taiwanese outbreak actioner The Sadness, it’s set to be another heavy-duty weekend for genre fans.
