Unraveling History
Hitchcoc2 May 2022
This episode takes us into the white house and shows us the First Ladies butting heads with the established, male-dominated world. Each must face expectations based on the way things have always been done. Eleanor is treated as an insignificant burden, being put down for wanting to be more than a presidential prop. Betty Ford is thrust into the white house shortly after the Nixon resignation with no chance to ease her way in. She is almost seen as a comic figure but gets some good advice. We know now that her tenure was never a bed of roses. It will be interesting to see what happens when her husband pardons his disgraced predecessor. The Obamas seem just too recent although it is nice to get in inside picture of them.

Good storytelling

Warning: Spoilers
I hope this is accurate as I love all the actors involved. The Roosevelt era is great and who doesn't love Gillian and Kiefer. The Ford era is brilliant with Michelle and Aaron providing great performance, especially dealing with her drinking. I am hoping the Obama era grows on me. I think Viola is a great actress but maybe an unknown actor like Barrack might have been more realistic. Her facial expressions which I know Michelle had don't work well on Viola's face as it seems forced.

Overall superb costumes, sets and acting. Thanks.

Great approach

The stories in our headlines, and history books, from this unique view. My only quibble is why Viola Davis felt it necessary to deliver her lines with ridiculously pursed lips. I found it extremely difficult to concentrate on her text.

Excellent and great episode of three strong will powered first ladies.

"Voices Carry" episode 2 of season one of "Showtime's" anthology "The First Lady" was one deep and entertaining episode a must watch for any historical or political buff as the scenes bring back memories. The episode(was well written and had super acting chemistry) once again does flashback and goes ahead in time to look at the three different generations of first ladies. We see Eleanor concerned about the common out of work person, and she speaks up and wants to have a say in husband Franklin's commission on the great depression. With Nixon now resigned and Jerry the first man, Betty(the elegant Michelle Pfeiffer) becomes first lady and shows her will power by attending a state dinner. Now in 2007 Michelle(the wonderful Viola Davis) steps up and becomes brash speaking on behave of her future president hubby and this style later lands both in the White House as first lady and first man. Michelle is no push over as she stands up in meetings and still cares for her girls. Overall excellent showcase episode of three strong ladies this series is a must watch for any political or historical buff.
