Track by Track is our recurring feature series in which artists guide readers through each song on a release. Today, Raffaella gets into her brand new EP, Live, Raff, Love (Act II).
Indie pop songwriter and Consequence CoSign Raffaella has released a brand new EP, Live, Raff, Love (Act II), a follow up to 2022’s Act I EP. Bigger and darker, the second act functions as the shadow to the first act’s light, creating a dialogue between each other. If Act I was a revolution, Act II is a revelation.
Each song on Live, Raff, Love (Act II) acts as a companion piece to its respective counterpart on the previous EP, and each song pairing has its own overarching theme. Some touch on more abstract ideas like love and adulthood, while others get more complex and detailed, such as learning to speak up for oneself in spite of expectations to be the ideal woman.

Bob the Builder is ready for his big screen debut.
The construction worker with a can-do attitude will be the subject of a new animated feature film from Mattel Films. Jennifer Lopez is producing “Bob the Builder,” while “In the Heights” star Anthony Ramos will voice the title character.
A twist on the long-running children’s series, “Bob the Builder” follows Roberto (aka Bob) who travels to Puerto Rico for a major construction job. According to the official logline, audiences will see Bob as he “takes on issues affecting the island and digs deeper into what it means to build. Bob’s journey will celebrate the vibrant and colorful textures of the Caribbean Latin nations and their people.” Felipe Vargas (the upcoming “Rosario”) is attached to write the screenplay; a director has not been announced.

Greta Gerwig's "Barbie" became a bona fide hit this year. After it premiered this July, the film grossed over $1.4 billion worldwide, which, according to Box Office Mojo, makes it the highest-grossing movie of the year so far, beating films like "The Super Mario Bros. Movie," "Oppenheimer," and "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3." Since it's pulled in passionate audiences worldwide, it's no wonder Mattel is eager to make even more movies inspired by its popular toy brands. Its upcoming film slate is being dubbed the "Mattel Universe." While the success of "Barbie" has certainly helped push the company to begin development on these films, the Mattel Universe has actually been years in the making. Let us explain.

On the heels of the over-billion-dollar box office success of Barbie, Robbie Brenner has been upped to the president of Mattel Films.

As Barbie continues its global domination, grossing over $1 billion at the box office after only its third week of release, the appropriate parties continue victory laps around their respective Malibu Dream Homes.
Last week, in between fielding questions about Hollywood’s dual strikes, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav and other Wbd execs invoked the Barbie name several times during the company’s second-quarter earnings report, noting that the movie will be a boon to third-quarter.
During Mattel’s quarterly earnings report at the end of July, CEO Ynon Kreiz called Barbie a “milestone” in the toymaker’s history. “The biggest shift in our strategy and in our DNA was to realize that people who buy our product are not just consumers, they are fans,” said Kreiz.

Hollywood studios are reportedly already in the midst of a “stampede” to make ‘Barbie’-style toy movies. New films based on the hit American Girl and miniature Polly Pocket dolls –both made by Barbie manufacturer Mattel – are said to have been given the green light. The Mail on Sunday also reported ‘Emily in Paris’ actress Lily Collins, 34, is set to star in the first Polly Pocket movie. It said the film is being written and directed by ‘Girls’ creator Lena Dunham, 37, and a source told the publication it will “be about a young girl and a pocket-sized woman who form a friendship”. The plans come after ‘Barbie’ has taken nearly $545million and counting at the global box office. A source said: “‘Barbie’ has set a fire under Hollywood. There is a stampede to cash in on other dolls.” The insider added negotiations for the films are going on despite the...

Kohn’s Corner is a weekly column about the challenges and opportunities of sustaining American film culture.
After years of blockbuster production driven by prefabricated superhero fandom, the summer of Barbenheimer is an unexpected delight. “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” show the potential for festival-anointed auteurs to worm their way into popular culture with smart and innovative projects. With “Barbie” already crossing half a billion dollars at the global box office and “Oppenheimer” at a formidable $300 million, the joint success of these very different movies seems to be telling Hollywood… something.
The most obvious takeaway from Barbenheimer: Audiences want originality and invention, not endless sequels and variations on what came before. Ok, let’s assume most studio bosses grasp this fundamental point. There’s more to it that. These films speak to a broader set of values and opportunities for studios to consider as they develop more movies that fickle audiences will consider worth their time.

With Barbie blowing up the box office bigger than Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, the world-famous Mattel toy company is ready to push the button on launching a Mattel Cinematic Universe. Barbie’s success is a golden ticket for Mattel. The Greta-Gerwig-directed comedy, powered by feminism and the color pink, gives Mattel the confidence it needs to bring 14 of its iconic toy properties to the silver screen. While some may roll their eyes at the thought of a Magic 8 Ball or Polly Pocket movie, remember that Barbie is radically different than anything we could have anticipated. If Mattel applies that level of care and risk with its other properties, moviegoers could be in for something unique and entertaining.
While Gerwig says she’s putting Barbie back in the box to focus on other prospects, Mattel is open to making sequels for the blonde bombshell and her eclectic group of friends.

After the success of July's "Barbie" movie, Mattel has its eyes on adapting some of its other beloved toys into films. There's the "Barney" movie starring Daniel Kaluuya, and now we have more details on a "Polly Pocket" film starring Lily Collins and written and directed by Lena Dunham.
Mattel producer Robbie Brenner, who's in charge of the company's film plan, confirmed to Variety in an article published July 26 that there is a "Polly Pocket" script, and it's "great."
"It's been an amazing collaboration," Brenner said. "Lena is so collaborative and rolls up her sleeves and really likes to roll around in notes and listen. She's incredible. Lily is so smart and so specific and so productorial. It's just been an incredible collaboration, so we are thrilled about it. Hopefully, we'll be making that at some point in the future." Updated with more Barbie comments from earnings call: Mattel CEO Ynon Kreiz didn’t exactly confirm a Barbie movie sequel but indicated it’s coming – no surprise – along with TV and other brand extensions for the never-been-more-iconic doll.
“We haven’t announced anything, and it’s probably a bit early to talk about sequels, but obviously, with the success of the film…that would invite more opportunities,” he said on a conference call after the toymaker’s quarterly earnings. “We operate in an industry where everyone is looking for these moments, for these brands, for these cultural events. And they happen, but they don’t happen that often. [So] we expect the brand to continue to grow, we expect to have more opportunities in content — and this in not just film, this is television and other areas.”

It’s a story about girlhood idols clad in their iconic looks, living in a faraway land. There’s a handsome guy, but the ladies realize he’s sort of beside the point. One woman ponders: Isn’t there more to life? A godmother figure explains that our protagonist must fix things in her old world before a new happily ever after, one that looks far different than what she thought she wanted.

Skeletor has triumphed over the forces of Eternia, as TheWrap has confirmed that Netflix has scuttled its iteration of the long-developing “Masters of the Universe” movie.
Mattel will be searching for a new producing/distribution partner for a big-budget adaptation of the 1980s action figure property, with at least $30 million in development costs already spent since 2007 in prior attempts to make a new movie. This latest version had Kyle Allen — still officially attached — starring as He-Man with Adam and Aaron Nee (“The Lost City”) set to direct.
The project has been bouncing around Hollywood for over 15 years, with Warner Bros. and Sony, as well as filmmakers like Jon M. Chu and McG temporarily involved. This recent attempt was shelved due to concerns over the budget, which reportedly ran over $200 million and was shut down even after the filmmakers allegedly brought the costs below $180 million.
