The statement that a fetus absorbs radiation from the mother is partly accurate. The barriers created by the uterus and placenta help filter out low and moderate doses of alpha radiation, and low doses of beta radiation, however they do not filter gamma radiation. A fetus in the early stages of development (between 2-18 weeks) is extremely sensitive to the effects of ionizing radiation, if the mother's bloodstream becomes contaminated with high doses of ionizing alpha or beta radiation it can be too much for the womb's natural filters and radiation becomes absorbed from the mother's blood by the baby. Gamma radiation is the most commonly encountered type of ionizing radiation, it is also the deadliest type, and easily passes through a human body, doses that are too small to make the mother sick can be lethal to a fetus in the early stages of the first trimester; so when a baby is stillborn due to radiation exposure, but the mother did not get sick, it can give the appearance of the baby absorbing radiation from the mother, when in fact the baby was exposed to too much ionizing radiation in early development.
