Popular Spanish filmmaker Kike Maíllo is set to direct “A Perfect Enemy,” a psychological thriller based on Amelie Nothomb’s bestselling novel “The Enemy’s Cosmetique” with “Cold War” star Tomasz Kot and “The Good Liar” actress Athena Strates set to headline.
Pulsar Content, the newly launched Paris sales company, has boarded the project and is representing the film in international markets, kicking off with the Afm. UTA Independent Film Group is co-representing the U.S. rights with Pulsar Content.
Described by Pulsar as a thriller with “edge-of-the-seat crime twists,” the movie follows a successful architect, Jeremy Angust, who is approached by a chatty woman named Texel Textor (Athena Strates) at a Paris airport. Jeremy misses his flight because of Texel, who seems like an outcast desperate for attention. Although the meeting seems fortuitous, the nature of this encounter soon turns into something much more sinister and criminal. Kot is represented by UTA,...

Luc Besson’s beleaguered film production and distribution company EuropaCorp announced on Monday that it could axe 22 posts from its operations in France.
“EuropaCorp began a consultation process with staff representatives on 11th January to put in place a new structure in France,” the company said in a statement.
“If the plan were adopted, the workforce in France would number 57 personnel once it has been carried out,” it added.
The company said that such a workforce would correspond to its operational needs as it puts in place a strategy – announced end-November - to re-focus on its core activities of film production, TV series and international sales.
Under that strategy, EuropaCorp plans to produce two to three English-language features and up to two French-language films annually.

The script is co-written by Fernando Navarro (Anacleto: Agente secreto) and Rafael Cobos, who penned Marshland along with its director. Here's a synopsis: Toro is completing a two-year sentence in prison for a robbery where he seriously wounded a police officer, a...

The novel is set in the steamy coastal Alabama town of Sea Breeze, where an interconnected group of older teens hook up and break up. The protagonist is Cage York, who looked set for a free ride to college for baseball until a DUI.
His coach orders him to spend the summer baling hay, where he meets uptight, snarky brunette Eva Brooks, whose long-time beau Josh has just been killed along with four other soldiers near Baghdad.

The line between humans and robots has been walked by, among others, "Blade Runner" and "A.I." as well as this year's releases "Chappie" and "Ex Machina." The list gets even longer when we add films that tackle the "can a human be a computer?" question, like the excellent "Her" and the less excellent "Transcendence." Add to this genre "Eva," which takes place in an alternate reality where humans and robots live side by side. This alternate reality is also 2014, but the movie was made in 2011. This being 2015, the film has become the past's look at an alt-future that is also, now, the past. The film, from Spain, has been picked up by The Weinstein Company to run in selected theaters starting March 13. It stars Daniel Bruhl and Marta Etura and is directed by Kike Maillo. Check out the trailer below: Read More: Watch: Ryan Gosling's 'Lost River...

There's a lot of artificial intelligence hitting the big screen this year. Next week brings Neill Blomkamp's Chappie and in April we have Alex Garland's Ex Machina followed by The Avengers: Age of Ultron in May. Well, next month The Weinstein Company will bring another into the mix with Eva. This is the first time the film is coming to the United States, but it opened on screens overseas all the way back in 2011. Daniel Bruhl (Rush, A Most Wanted Man) stars in the film as a cybernetic engineer tasked with giving emotional intelligence to the first robot child. But he has to learn a bit from his brother's daughter Eva first. Watch! Here's the Us trailer for Kike Maíllo's Eva from The Weinstein Company: It's 2014. Humans live along with machines. A.I. at the movies is suddenly a hot topic with Neill Blomkamp's "Chappie" and Alex Garland's "Ex Machina" around the corner, and The Weinstein Company want to be part of the conversation. First released in 2011 internationally, the studio is now bringing "Eva" to theaters stateside and the first U.S. trailer has arrived. Directed by Kike Maíllo, the movie is set in an alternate, slightly more futuristic present day where the challenge for science doesn't seem to be creating artificial intelligence, but emotional intelligence. But as always, playing God has its consequences. Here's the official synopsis: The year 2014. Humans live along with machines. Alex, a renowned cybernetic engineer, returns to Santa Irene to carry out a very specific mission for the Robotic Faculty: the creation of a child robot. During his ten-year absence, life has moved on for his brother David and Lana, who got her life back together after his departure.

It's been a long day in Ballroom 20. I live-blogged "24." I live-blogged "Under the Dome" by accident. I live-blogged "Community." And I watched thousands of young women squeal over Dylan O'Brien. Now it's time to cap off Comic-Con Thursday with Showtime's "Penny Dreadful." While Eva Green is absent -- Too busy to kick off her 2015 Emmy campaign here? -- we have many of the "Penny Dreadful" men, including creator John Logan, Reeve "Dorian Gray" Carney, Harry "Frankenstein" Treadaway and Josh "Werewolf Guy" Harnett. Aisha Tyler is moderating. Click through and follow along... 5:58 p.m. "Penny Dreadful" has to follow after the terrific "Hannibal" panel, which was also missing a number of featured stars... Sepinwall live-blogged that one. Oh and we don't really have the "Penny Dreadful" men, because Timothy Dalton isn't here. 6:04 p.m. Great Season 1 sizzle reel. Although Hammer Films will always be associated with British horror, the studio did have stiff competition. Amicus specialised in the successful horror anthologies and Us counterparts American International Pictures established a permanent UK base in the mid sixties. Other smaller independents took their own bite from the cherry tree of horror with some success, the best known being Tigon Films.
Tigon has received some belated recognition in recent years. Andy Boot’s book on British horror Fragments of Fear devotes a chapter to the company while John Hamilton’s excellent book Beast in the Cellar covers the varied career of Tigon’s charismatic founder Tony Tenser.
Like Hammer’s Sir James Carreras, Tenser was one of the British Film Industry’s great entrepreneurs. Born in London to poor Lithuanian immigrants and a movie fan since childhood, he was an ambitious man with a natural talent for showmanship. Combining shrewd business...

Carine Roitfeld, super stylist, former editor of French Vogue and now a global director of Harper's Bazaar, has spent decades reinventing the way we wear clothes. Now the subject of a documentary, she talks to Eva Wiseman about becoming a grandmother, fashion politics and why she's sharing her trade secrets
Carine Roitfeld smells of matches and burned vanilla, like the end of a birthday party. She orders a coffee in the elegant café next door to her Paris apartment, and when I tell her how good she smells she leans forward and says: "That is the most wonderful thing I could hear today." She is working on her own perfume, she explains. This is a test scent – "Still too sweet, no?" – and as we talk it fades into the café air, sugaring the things she says.

With each passing year, Tiff is becoming more and more prominent on the film festival circuit, with more and more Oscar-primed films making their debut out in Canada. And with the initial line-up announced for the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival, the trend is definitely continuing.
Amongst the many, many films making their presence felt out in Toronto will be Steve McQueen’s highly anticipated 12 Years a Slave, which launched a powerful first trailer earlier in the month. The film sees Chiwetel Ejiofor lead a fantastic cast, with Michael Fassbender returning to work for his Hunger / Shame director, alongside the likes of Brad Pitt, Benedict Cumberbatch, Sarah Paulson, Paul Giamatti, and many more.
Opening the festival will be Bill Condon’s The Fifth Estate, which stars Benedict Cumberbatch as WikiLeaks founder, Julian Assange, alongside Daniel Brühl, Laura Linney, Anthony Mackie, and Stanley Tucci.

José Coronado, No Rest for the Wicked Pedro Almodóvar didn't have much luck at the Spanish Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' Goya Awards this evening in Madrid: Almodóvar's The Skin I Live In won a total of four Goyas, but none for its director/writer. Starring Antonio Banderas as a plastic surgeon, Elena Anaya as his captive woman, and Jan Cornet as the good-looking young man whom the doctor blames for the death of his daughter, the sex-bending mystery melodrama won Goyas for Best Actress (Anaya), Best New Actor (Cornet), Best Original Music (Alberto Iglesias, his tenth Goya win), and Best Makeup/Hair. Per Variety the film, "turns on a troubled teen who is kidnapped, shuttled to a house in the mountains, and forced to work as a slave. The only escape is through a dark forest where mysterious, savage creatures lurk." Film Factory will be handling international distribution and describes it as "A wide-audience film in the line of 'The Descent'" The film is expected to start shooting in September. Madrid -- Pedro Almodovar's The Skin I Live In led the pack Tuesday when Spain’s Film Academy announced nominations for the Xxvi Goya Awards, snatching nods in 16 of the 28 categories, followed by Enrique Urbizu's thriller No Rest for the Wicked with 14 and Kike Maillo's directorial debut Eva with 12. The 16 noms end a period of chilly relations between Almodovar and the Spanish academy, which he quit years ago citing irregularities in voting and repeated snubs. "Pedro will be delighted with the news of so many nominations," Skin producer and Pedro's brother Agustin Almodovar told the Spanish

Each year the Sitges Film Festival commercial spot is almost as eagerly awaited by the general public as its lineup, and Rafa Antón, creative director of the China agency and the man responsible for its campaigns over the last ten years, has presented this year’s commercial, entitled "Alter Ego". In addition, the preliminary lineup for the Festival has been revealed, but it's not complete by any means. More will be announced throughout the month.
Antón presented the commercial at the Velodrome, property of the brand, along with Festival director Angel Sala and one of Sitges 2011’s partners Moritz Beer.

Emile Hirsch worshipping at Venice's red carpet
This is my last report from Venice which I'm writing from Athens. During my last two festival days I caught five films ranging from great surprises to total mediocrities.
Quando La Notte
This little Italian romantic drama about a troubled young mother and a mountaineer would have benefited immensely by trimming 15 minutes from its running time. The last reel or so of the film is totally unnecessary and unfortunately shows of Cristina Comencini’s weaknesses as both screenwriter and director. The two stars, Filippo Timi and Claudia Pandolfi give very good performances, but they weren't enough to save the film from the Italian critics who just massacred it. Interesting subject matter, mediocre film.
The Exchange
The Israeli film within the Competition section started off nicely. Eran Kolirin's follow up to the much praised The Band's Visit watches an everyman watching his life...

Last autumn we posted a promotional teaser for Kike Maíllo's great looking Eva which featured a robotic girl being taught at a table along with some future technology which looked pretty spectacular. The film started shooting in December with Inglorious Basterds star Daniel Bruehl in the lead role of Álex, a cybernetics engineer who is asked to work on a very special project: creating a robot child.
This shiny teaser for the film gives us a first look at Bruehl in action, putting together what I can only assume is the cybernetic equivalent of the soul and then we see the robot wake up as Eva, Álex’s young niece, looks on in awe.
Though the teaser does little more than show a short clip, the film promises a “story of return, re-encounters and loss.” I’m getting a bit of an A.I.: Artificial Intelligence vibe, mostly because of...

Spain Film Scene: Local Alex de la Iglesia's ("The Oxford Murders", "Day of the Beast") latest film "Balada Triste de Trompeta" finished principal photography this month (see pic of director above). This co-production with France's production company La fabrique 2, tells the story of two heavily scarred clowns, Javier and Sergio, that bloodily compete for the love of Natalia, the trapezist. Set in 1973, during the last days of the dictatorship of Franco, the director himself describes the film as a "grotesque tragedy of comedic horror." The film stars T.V comedian Carlos Areces, fresh from the success of its first film "Spanish Movie" and Antonio de la Torre, the critically acclaimed actor of Daniel Sánchez Arévalo's "Gordos", also starring are Sancho Gracia, Santiago Segura and Terele Pávez, all veterans from de la Iglesia's previous films. The film is set to be released at the end of 2010. After his hit debut "1 franco,...

We were asked just two days ago to remove the embeds of the promo teaser from our article. The promo showed a robotic girl being taught at a kitchen table, along with some great future tech which included a robotic cat and looked utterly stunning. Now, word comes via Variety that Daniel Bruehl (Inglorious Basterds) will be headlining with the script written by Sergi Belbel, Maillo, Marti Roca and Aintza Serra. This will be Kike's first feature length film, and it has a big budget for a Spanish film: 6million Euros. Production will start in December in Switzerland with sales being repped by Wild Bunch.
Synopsis:
A meller with futuristic overtones, "Eva" sees a shy young genius (Bruehl) employed by his former university to design robot software. Action unfolds in a mountainous region, which could be the Pyrenees, given that characters speak in Catalan and Spanish.

Very little is known about this film, in fact, I still think it's in development and I'm not sure if the footage we have was a short film or some type of promo reel, but regardless, it's a coming of age robot tale with some pretty slick looking tech and we have 3 minutes of footage after the break to give you a taste! And yes, it's going to be a feature. If any of our Spanish speaking readers could translate we'd greatly appreciate it!
Update: Special thanks to reader qtarantino who made a video with English subtitles, it's embedded after the break.
