Eight years after the film “Hidden Figures” brought the work of three Black women NASA mathematicians to mass audiences, National Geographic will debut a documentary film “The Space Race: The Untold Story of the First Black Astronauts.” Featuring interviews with former test pilot Ed Dwight, NASA astronauts Victor Glover, Leland Melvin and more, “The Space Race” reveals the boundary-defying work of these men who dreamed of reaching the stars as Americans struggled for equality at home on solid ground. The film chronicles over 50 years of this history, up to 2020 and the news about George Floyd’s murder reaching the International Space Station.
The new film documents the discrimination these men faced in achieving their goals. In a trailer for the movie, NASA astronaut and former administrator Charlie Bolden remembers how amazed he was at America’s space program, but “growing up in the Jim Crow South, you knew what you...

Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz's fierce, real-life chemistry fueled their roles as the bickering but loving couple on their trailblazing sitcom "I Love Lucy." No matter how aggravating Lucy's goofy schemes became, at the end of the day Ricky always forgave her and couldn't help but be charmed by her wild antics. But behind the scenes, Lucy and Desi's actual marriage was far from the cookie-cutter image they presented in their beloved television series.
There was a tension between Lucy and Desi that would impact the "I Love Lucy" production even from the very start. Amy Poehler's fantastic documentary "Lucy and Desi," assembles private audio tapes recorded by the couple with home movies and photographs, giving a unique insight into their own personal thoughts and feelings — especially regarding the fractured state of their marriage and how working on "I Love Lucy" exacerbated many of their pre-existing conflicts. "It's...

Audacy’s Cadence13 Studios today announced a partnership with Emmy and Golden Globe Award-winning writer, actress, producer and director Amy Poehler’s Paper Kite Productions – the production company behind hit shows including Russian Doll, Broad City and Harlem – for a 30-episode comedy franchise featuring stories that parody and pay homage to popular themes in the podcast space.
The franchise will be broken out into three seasons of 10 episodes. Each will focus on a central character and distinct theme; however, characters will make crossover appearances across stories and seasons.
The first installment in the partnership, Say More with Dr? Sheila, is slated to launch later this year. The 10-episode season stars Poehler as Dr? Sheila, a fictional therapist with questionable methods and credentials counseling a new couple every week. Chaos in February is a feeling generally relegated to relentless weather, Valentine’s Day nerves, and the typically intense Oscar circuit. But this year’s winter awards run has proven critical for a couple of TV shows, as they aim to solidify their chosen genre placement amid debate over where they really belong. Surprise, surprise: Saturday night’s PGA Award winners made a major impact, as “The Bear” and “The White Lotus” snagged key wins in the categories of Comedy and Drama, respectively
Yes, “The Bear” is a comedy series — at least, that’s how it’s been designated throughout the winter awards cycle and where it’s destined to run this summer at the 2023 Emmys. On Saturday, the Producers Guild of America gathered at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles to hand out the 2023 PGA Awards.
While the ceremony honors the achievements of producers across media, meaning awards were given out to series like “The White Lotus” and “The Bear,” the documentary “Navalny,” and animated feature “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio,” its theatrical film award, which was won by “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” is the one all eyes were on.
The Darryl F. In the room to accept were executive producers Jonathan Wang, Daniel Kwan, and Daniel Scheinert (the latter two also wrote and directed the hit multiversal dramedy from A24). The 34th Producers Guild of America Awards took place on Saturday, February 25 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. The biggest award of the night, the Darryl F. While Amy Poehler might be one of the most prolific comedians on TV, she hasn’t embraced all comedic mediums. The former Saturday Night Live star lives perpetually in YouTube clips of her best work on the variety show, and starred in a number of movies including Sisters, Baby Mama, Mean Girls, and as a voice actor in Inside Out.
For all her success as the perpetually sunny Leslie Knope on Parks and Recreation, and now running her own production company, Poehler hasn’t cracked the code in adding social media quips to her repertoire. And while some might assume she’s simply not interested, that’s not quite the truth. In fact, Poehler is a big fan of some of the platforms — she’s just not sure she’s going to move beyond lurking and admiring what other content creators are already doing.

After two years of virtual festivals, Sundance is overdue for a comeback. The Park City event is set to return to Park City on January 19 and continue through January 29. While films will still be available to online ticket holders starting January 24, the main emphasis will be the in-person experience that put Sundance on the map in the first place.
While the pandemic disrupted the film industry in 2020, Sundance managed to take place that year just before the shutdowns, launching future Best Picture winner “Coda” into an unpredictable landscape. Now, the market and culture of moviegoing remains in flux, and Sundance is poised to return to the scene just in time to launch a wide array of movies into that ever-changing climate.

Going into Sunday’s Emmys, HBO and Netflix were tied with 23 wins apiece after two nights of the Creative Arts awards. The gap between the two rivals only widened during the Primetime ceremony as the premium cable network collected an assortment of statuettes for programs including Succession, The White Lotus and stalwart Last Week Tonight as it again led the pack of winners by outlet.
Bolstered by HBO’s strong showing, Warner Bros. Discovery led all the major media conglomerates with a total of 40 wins. That tally, calculated by The Hollywood Reporter after the TV Academy declined to break out those statistics for the first time this year, was no surprise given that a combined HBO and HBO Max collected a whopping 140 total nominations, with HBO proper clocking in at 108 — enough to edge the 105 mentions that Netflix collected. The Emmys often award the same shows over and over again, and, well, they did that again tonight by giving Best Comedy Series to last year’s winner “Ted Lasso” and Best Drama Series to the winner two years ago, “Succession.” But it wasn’t a sweep of the Comedy and Drama categories at the 74th Prime Emmy Awards by those two shows by any means.
In fact, the Emmys spread the wealth quite a bit: in the Comedy categories, “Ted Lasso” indeed won four Emmys: for Lead Actor Jason Sudeikis, Supporting Actor Brett Goldstein, and Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series, as well as the top prize. But “Abbott Elementary” also won two major prizes: Sheryl Lee Ralph for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series, and for Best Writing for a Comedy Series.

The ceremony, which aims to celebrate television’s biggest names and shows, will be hosted by “SNL” star Kenan Thompson. Gomez, who notably did not get a nomination for her performance in “Only Murders in the Building,” will still see a chance at holding an Emmy statuette thanks to the show’s 17 awards nods, including for outstanding comedy series.
Kerry Washington, Ariana DeBose, Will Arnett, Vanessa Bayer, Angela Bassett, Jimmy Kimmel, Seth Meyers and Molly Shannon will also present.

So, what do the 4th Primetime Emmy Awards, which took place Feb. 18, 1952, have in common with the 2022 edition?
Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz.
The stars of the No. 1 TV series, CBS’ “I Love Lucy,” were the hosts of the Emmy ceremony, which was telecast in Los Angeles on Kcea, now known as Kabc. And it was the first time that the Emmys embraced national television networks. Previously, nominations and awards were bestowed on projects that were produced or aired in Los Angeles.
This year, Amy Poehler’s valentine of a film, “Lucy and Desi,” not only received strong reviews but six Emmy nominations including Best Documentary or Nonfiction Special and directing for Poehler. The Amazon Prime doc won two: writer Mark Monroe and composer David Schwartz.
Traveling back to the 1952, the ceremony took places at venerable nightclub, the Cocoanut Grove. It must have been a short show because only seven awards were handed out.

The music of “The White Lotus,” “Severance,” “Stranger Things” and “Schmigadoon!” won Creative Arts Emmys Sunday night in a mixture of predicted wins and upsets.
The big winner was Chilean-born, Montreal-based composer Cristobal Tapia de Veer who walked off with a pair of statues for his music for HBO’s “The White Lotus,” for main title theme music and for music composition for a limited or anthology series, movie or special.
His primal drumbeats, wordless voices and wooden flutes set a tropical vibe for the Hawaiian resort and its offbeat visitors. And although it was entered in the “limited series” category, “The White Lotus” is slated to return for a second season.
Theodore Shapiro won his first Emmy for “Severance,” in the category of music composition for a series. This marks the first major industry award for the widely respected composer, who has never been nominated for the Oscar (despite...

The Emmys sure looked a lot like the Grammys on Saturday night. The Beatles, Adele, Lizzo and the Super Bowl halftime show were some of the biggest winners at night one of the Creative Arts Emmys, where music took center stage.
Ironically, the Grammy Awards itself didn’t win a major award, but music specials were big winners in key categories including outstanding documentary or nonfiction series, which “The Beatles: Get Back” won. It’s been a while since John, Paul, George and Ringo were thanked at an awards show as much as they were on Saturday night, but the Disney+ series won five Emmys overall — the most of the night, tied with CBS’ “Adele: One Night Only.”
“Adele” was named variety special (pre-recorded). Other big music winners included “Pepsi Super Bowl Lvi Halftime Show Starring Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Mary J. Blige, Eminem, Kendrick Lamar and 50 Cent” with three wins,...

Emmy voters were moved by music, handing out five awards apiece to “The Beatles: Get Back” and “Adele: One Night Only” at Saturday’s portion of the two-night Creative Arts Emmys.
The music of “The Pepsi Super Bowl Halftime Show” was also a big winner, with three awards, including Music Direction for Adam Blackstone.
In the reality TV world, “Love on the Spectrum U.S.,” the Netflix series that follows people on the autism spectrum as they navigate the world of dating and relationships, snagged three Emmys, including ones for casting, picture editing and unstructured reality program. And, RuPaul Charles won his seventh Emmy — in a row — for hosting “RuPaul’s Drag Race.”

For the third year in a row—and fourth in the last five—White Horse Pictures finds itself in the middle of the Emmy horse race.
In 2020, the White Horse production The Apollo, about the legendary performing arts venue in Harlem, earned Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Special. Last year, White Horse’s The Bee Gees: How Can You Mend a Broken Heart was nominated for six Emmys, winning one. This year it’s back in contention with Lucy and Desi, Amy Poehler’s documentary about Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, which is nominated for half a dozen Emmys—more than any other documentary.

Even though nominations for the 74th annual Emmy Awards were announced a month ago, an exclusive list of individuals have reason to celebrate all over again. A whopping 27 performers, writers, and directors now have two or more bids in 2022 for their work in front of and behind the camera.
Extending his advantage at the top of this impressive list, Bill Hader has received six nominations this year. He returns to the Comedy Actor category for “Barry,” earned bids for Comedy Writing and Comedy Directing for the HBO series for episodes “starting now” and “710N,” respectively, and now adds a nomination in the Comedy Series category as an executive producer. When the process of gathering materials for “Lucy and Desi” started, producer Jeanne Elfant Festa remembers was not prepared for the discovery that Lucy Arnaz Luckinbill would find. “I was in her pantry. I was literally stretching and I looked up and I saw a lockbox. I said ‘Lucy, what is that?’” she tells Gold Derby during our Meet the Experts: TV Documentary panel (watch the exclusive video interview above). Arnaz discovered that the surprise of the lockbox contained several of Lucy’s tapes that included recordings from after Lucy and Desi were divorced as well as Desi, Vivian Vance and the kids reenacting their favorite scenes from “I Love Lucy” with Lucy directing them. “It was just so beautiful because it also instilled the relationship that we all wanted to cling to, which is the throughline of the film. They maintained that respect and love for each other until...

A version of this story about the Beatles first appeared in the Down to the Wire: Comedy issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
They formed in the late 1950s, changed the world in 1964 and broke up in 1970. Two of them died, one in 1980 and one in 2001. And now, almost 60 years after the release of “Love Me Do,” can the Beatles really be the hottest thing in the nonfiction categories at this year’s Emmys?
Well, yeah, they can. Peter Jackson’s three-part, nearly eight-hour series “The Beatles: Get Back” rocked its way to five nominations, including Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Series and Outstanding Directing for a Documentary/Nonfiction Program. That includes the first-ever nomination for Beatle Ringo Starr, an executive producer on the series, and the third nom for his fellow Beatle and fellow producer Paul McCartney, whose first two noms came for the specials “McCartney in St. Petersburg” in...
