Yesterday we rocked you with an Expendables promo trailer that included the awesome badass that is Dolph Lundgren. Just last week, as part of our Fantastic Fest coverage, Brian Salisbury raved about Dolph in his Universal Soldier: A New Beginning review. We've interviewed the man, we've applauded his early work and we've interviewed him some more. It is safe to say that without Dolph Lundgren, we probably wouldn't know what to do with ourselves. Luckily, he exists. And he's got a new movie in the works, Command Performance. And to help get the word out about this new flick, in which Dolph plays a drummer who beats some ass to save a hot chick, we've offered to host an exclusive clip. But that's not all. In addition to the clip, Dolph was kind enough to give us a little custom intro, just for the readers of Film School Rejects. Check it out below. Yep »

Tim League, owner of the Alamo Drafthouse and co-founder of Fantastic Fest, is a giant child. I don't mean that as a disparagement; quite the contrary. What I love about Tim is that he has never lost a wild, unrestrained passion for film and for anything that could be considered "badass". He has no concept of pretension or egotism. This is the guy who takes all the filmmakers visiting for Fantastic Fest to a freaking shooting range! I never tire of the image of Tokyo Gore Police director Yoshihiro Nishimura brandishing a shotgun with little to no idea how to use it. Welcome to America buddy. And who else but Tim would think it a good idea to use a flame-thrower to sear meat in a packed movie theater? Come on! While many others ran the gamut from severe disappointment to utter rage at the announcement that Universal Soldier: A New Beginning would be the final Fantastic »

Dolph Lundgren with the Alamo Drafthouse's Lyrae Anderson
Dolph Lundgren isn't the first name that springs to mind when you think "chemical engineer," is it? You might be surprised to know that the guy who has made a career out of playing muscular bad dudes in movies has a masters in that field from the University of Sydney, and he was also a Fulbright scholar to MIT. However, he dropped out after two weeks to pursue acting full time, and that's left us with his performances in everything from Rocky IV to The Punisher to Universal Soldier.
He'll also be going toe to toe with Sylvester Stallone once more in The Expendables, but we found him returning to his Universal Soldier roots at Fantastic Fest in Austin with a sneak peek at Universal Soldier: A New Beginning. Read on beyond the break for the full interview, including an homage to »

Fantastic Fest came to a close on Day Eight, and it was most definitely with a bang, and not a whimper. In fact, the final Secret Screening provided bangs both onscreen and off, and then the evening ended with a vampire-themed closing party. They even supplied sangria in blood bags, so it looked like you were chugging some b-negative instead of a fruity wine beverage. The staff were dressed up with scars, blood, and fangs, and attendees showed up in costume as well. Highlights included The Count from Sesame Street and a bevy of female bloodsuckers.
But, Day Eight also meant movies, and plenty of ‘em. There were screenings all day, including a sneak peek at the vampire flick Daybreakers from Lionsgate. Even after the festival had ended and people were partying, non-festival attenders lined up for a midnight screening of Paranormal Activity. Heat lightning lit up the sky around Austin, »

It's over. I can't believe it's over. Chaos Reigned. I was ready for it to be over; eight days of films and fun, nearly nonstop, it can't go on forever, and the party has to end. But it ended on several high notes.
I had a brief interview with the Spierig brothers, who brought Daybreakers in for the Closing Night film, although it's not getting released until January. Despite my forgetting my notebook and being dead-tired, the highlight was their response to my saying "How can you forget someone who pulls a gun out of their ass?!" Having seen Undead, and loving it, it's hard to forget Mungo McKay.
I ended up walking out of Dirty Mind, not because the film is bad, but because I was tired, and not in the mood for white-on-light subtitles. Bad subtitles is a pet peeve of mine, especially having seen amazing ones in »

Action star Dolph Lundgren talks about his new film on DVD, The Expendables and other future films
Before 1985, Dolph Lundgren was a name only known in martial arts circles from the numerous titles he won in karate. After his film debut in the James Bond film A View to a Kill, that same year Lundgren took audiences by storm with his powerful performance as Ivan Drago in Rocky IV, which catapulted his career. Lundgren still has a thirst for action, as you can see in his latest film, Direct Contact, which hits the shelves on DVD and Blu-ray on June 2. I had the chance to speak with Lundgren over the phone, and here's what he had to say about his new film, and much more.
So can you talk about how the film first came to you, and I was curious if Danny Lerner and Les Weldon wrote this part for you specifically? »

Dolph Lundgren discusses The Expendables
I just got off the phone with actor Dolph Lundgren, where we discussed his latest film on DVD, Direct Contact, which comes to DVD and Blu-ray on June 2, but we also talked about his role in the new Sylvester Stallone film, The Expendables. Here's what Lundgren had to say about the upcoming film.
Can you talk a little bit about The Expendables that you have coming out? Have you wrapped on that?
Dolph Lundgren: No, we're about halfway through. Most of my stuff is still left. I've done a couple of scenes and it's a pleasure working with Stallone again. He's a very experienced guy. You know, I direct myself, so I appreciate his advice because I can pass it on. Few people have more experience than him, a lead in a big action movie. I mean, how many big movies has he done in his career? »

Since it has become apparent that all of you need updates on everything that happens in the lives of Jean-Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren -- two of Hollywood's greatest B-movie action stars -- we are happy to share with you a few photos from the set of their upcoming collaboration, Universal Soldiers: The Next Generation. The folks over at Quiet Earth have an entire gallery of images, including a few shots of various set pieces used in the filming of the direct-to-dvd threequel, but the one above is easily the most important. For more pics from the set of the John Hyams directed actioner, click over to Quiet Earth. You may also want to check out the video below, courtesy of MySpace, which shows some of the action being filmed -- go ahead, count the bodies on the ground. There's a lot. And I don't think any of us are going to complain about that. Look »

With all the excitement surrounding The Expendables, it's easy to lose sight of the other old school action movie team-up coming down the pike; Universal Soldier 3 featuring Jean-Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren. The first photo of the two stars together has been released, and it strikes exactly the right balance of rugged machismo and unbridled homoeroticism that we've come to expect from the duo. The one sour note in this touching reunion is the proposed title for the film; Universal Soldiers: The Next Generation. Are they pulling a Ghostbusters and introducing a fresh-faced batch of 'lil Universal Soldiers to the mix? Unless we're promised a full-on Van Damme/Lundgren make-out session to make up for it, I'll wait for Command Performance to get my Lundgren fill. How does Universal Soldier 3 rank in your most anticipated action movies? »

I know what you’re thinking: “Hah, that’s funny, he made up the title of the movie.” Nope, I’m not. That’s actually the title that the latest “Universal Soldier” movie is going by. “Universal Soldier 3: The Next Generation”. And they didn’t just get a couple of roid ragers for the role, either; they actually went out and got the original Universal Soldiers themselves, Jean Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren. The film is currently shooting in some Godforsaken bombed out Eastern European country under the auspices of John Hyams, a TV director who has shot episodes of Blind Justice and NYPD Blue. Full synopsis for the movie, images, and a behind-the-scenes video from the boys at Quiet Earth, who I thought only covered post-apocalyptic movies, but they seem to have expanded into sequels of ’80s movies as well. Hey, you gotta grow, right? A crazed Chechen nationalist, »
