Very good apart from the laughter track
'The Pink Panther' "Psychedelic Pink" (1969)
Opening thoughts: 'Psychedelic Pink' is the thirty ninth Pink Panther cartoon and is another very good cartoon. A few previous cartoons did disappoint, namely 'Shocking Pink' and 'Reel Pink', but there were also some truly great ones including 'The Pink Phink'. 'Psychedelic Pink' is not one of the best Pink Panther cartoon and is a slight let down after another one of the series' best 'Pinkadilly Circus' (while being a big improvement over the first 1968 cartoon 'Sky Blue Pink'), but it is still very good none the less and was actually very close to great because of its many good things being so good.
Bad things: The only real annoyance is the laughter track, which is not just distracting but unnecessary.
Good things: Animation though is just wonderful, the images seen are fascinating and psychedelic personified and the colours are some of the most striking of any Pink Panther cartoon. It's drawn beautifully as well as you'd expect. The music is jazzy and upbeat, also very easy to remember and well matched with Pink's antics. The theme tune was a classic and still is now.
Furthermore, the gags are very clever, are imaginatively timed and are more importantly funny. The ending rounds things off nicely, and the story is a classic Pink vs. The little white guy story and done with much humour, energy and heart. Pink is a character full of charisma and natural comic timing and is likable and cool.
Both of those can all be seen in a cartoon that plays to his strengths. The little white guy is a great supporting character, he's funny too and often in his outings with Pink is one we feel sympathy for. The two work with and against one another wonderfully.
Closing thoughts: All in all, apart from the laughter track, Psychedelic Pink is a very good entry in the Pink Panther cartoon series.
8/10.
