A Pink and mouse game
'The Pink Panther' "Pinknic" (1967)
Opening thoughts: All the previous years' batches were on the whole very solid, with a very high number of good cartoons and mostly more than that. Only a few disappointed. 'Pinknic' is a very good start to the 1967 batch, which was also generally a solid year for the Pink Panther series, with plenty of things that make the series as good as it is at its best present and with little wrong. The little there is that is wrong didn't come over as massive issues. Not one of the best of the series, a long way from one of the worst as well.
Bad things: Beginning with what is not quite as good, if you are familiar with the Pink Panther cartoons though, there won't be much story-wise that will come across as surprising.
For my tastes too, the ending is a little rushed and not as funny as the rest.
Good things: On the other hand, there is so much that works. The gags are inventive and highly amusing, the lively pacing helps. The animation is clean and colourful with everything lovingly drawn, and some visual ideas like seeing the mouse through Pinky's sleeping eyelids are really clever. The music is still catchy and infectious, it's the sort of music you hear a lot but it never gets old, or at least to me it doesn't.
Pink is cool and fun as well as instantly likable, and I loved how the mouse was the sort of foil who couldn't have been more different in personality to how he looked. Their outsmarting of one another while somewhat predictable at times is still a lot of fun to watch.
Concluding thoughts: In conclusion, fun and inventive with the lead characters on great form.
8/10.
