Another Pink Panther classic
'The Pink Panther' "Rock a Bye Pinky" (1966)
Opening thoughts: 1966 was a very solid year for the Pink Panther series. Almost all the cartoons from that year are good and more, with the only disappointment being 'Pink Plunk Pink' and that was still worthwhile. Of the previous 1966 Pink Panther cartoons, 'Smile Pretty Say Pink' and 'Genie with the Light Pink Fur'. 'Rock a Bye Pinky' is a wonderful way to end that year's output for the series and is wonderful in its own right. Not only one of the best early Pink Panther cartoons, but one of the classics overall.
Good things: 'Rock a Bye Pinky' succeeds in every way. In hindsight it is not entirely imaginative, but you don't notice at all because of the excellent way it's executed in that it actually feels more original than it is and it plays to Pink's character strengths. The animation is very charming to look at, with elegant colouring and simple but carefully drawn drawing.
Music is catchy and energetic, always appropriate for the action, and the theme tune is still fun to listen to no matter how many times it's heard.
The gags are clever, well-set-up and rounded off and most importantly are funny. I still love Pinky's coolness, charm and effortless likability, he is also still fun to watch as always. The dog is a great character and in my view one of Pinky's best partners.
Concluding thoughts: Overall, a classic from the Pink Panther series.
10/10.
