A bunch of mice with Pink Panther
The Pink Panther to me is one of animation's most iconic characters. DePatie-Freleng Enterprises' output was very hit and miss, or at least post-1970 it was, especially the later theatrical series. With hits such as Pink Panther and the Ant and the Aardvark, and duds such as Crazylegs Crane. For me, The Pink Panther on the whole was the studio's best theatrical series, though The Inspector and Ant and the Aardvark ones come close. It did become very variable from the mid-70s onwards, but the 60s-early 70s output contained some of the studio's best work.
'Pink a Boo' is the twenty first Pink Panther cartoon and is another very good cartoon. A few previous cartoons did disappoint, namely 'Shocking Pink' and 'Reel Pink', but there were also some truly great ones including 'The Pink Phink'. 'Pink a Boo' is not one of the best Pink Panther cartoon and is a slight let down after another one of the series' best 'Smile Pretty Say Pink', but it is still very good none the less and was actually very close to great because of its many good things being so good.
It isn't flawless. There is very little wrong other than times when the story is on the simplistic side.
Also felt that a couple of the gags in the middle are a little dull.
However, the animation though is very pretty and drawn with simply charming detail. The music is jazzy and compliments the goings-on very well, and the theme tune is still positively infectious even after hearing for goodness knows how many times. The gags are very amusing if not exactly hilarious, the beginning and end are great and the middle is mostly too but with a couple of bits that don't work quite as well.
The action is basically Pink and the mice trying to outsmart one another, so if you are familiar with the Pink Panther format you'll find nothing new here, however it's done in a way that you honestly don't mind that. Pink is very likable and charismatic as he always is, and the mice are very cute and funny while quite persistent later on.
Overall, a very good cartoon from the series but not one of the best. 8/10.
