Decent, though doesn't see Pink Panther at his best
The Pink Panther to me is one of animation's most iconic characters. DePatie-Freleng Enterprises' output was very hit and miss, or at least post-1970 it was, especially the later theatrical series. With hits such as Pink Panther and the Ant and the Aardvark, and duds such as Crazylegs Crane. For me, The Pink Panther on the whole was the studio's best theatrical series, though The Inspector and Ant and the Aardvark ones come close. It did become very variable from the mid-70s onwards, but the 60s-early 70s output contained some of the studio's best work.
'An Ounce of Pink's' premise was a nice one, a cartoon character in a battle against an inanimate object is always fun to watch in animation and a classic premise for many studios (i.e. Disney). 'An Ounce of Pink' generally does a nice job with it, but also could have done more. As a cartoon, it is decent but also uneven, not one of the best Pink Panther cartoons while also not one of the worst. Probably not one of the first cartoons to watch if you don't like seeing Pink mistreated.
Of course there is much to like. Pink is still a cool and easy-to-like character, and the machine is very funny as is its dialogue. The animation is simple but quite elegant in that regard and not simplistic, there is enough detail in the backgrounds and the colour have a sense of life. The music is still deliciously catchy, the theme tune is iconic and no matter how many times you never hear it it never annoys.
The voice acting for the machine is stellar, while the story is crisply paced and our attention never wanders.
However, 'An Ounce of Pink' could have been better. The ending felt too rushed and abrupt, almost incomplete feeling. While enough of the gags are funny, the cartoon does have too much mean spirited humour and it was not always easy seeing Pink so cruelly treated.
Did think too that the canned laughter track was very over used and distracting, to the extent that it got very annoying
In summary decent if not great. 7/10.
