More fun with the Pink Panther, 'Noah's Ark' style
The Pink Panther to me is one of animation's most iconic characters. DePatie-Freleng Enterprises' output was very hit and miss, or at least post-1970 it was, especially the later theatrical series. With hits such as Pink Panther and the Ant and the Aardvark, and duds such as Crazylegs Crane. For me, The Pink Panther on the whole was the studio's best theatrical series, though The Inspector and Ant and the Aardvark ones come close. It did become very variable from the mid-70s onwards, but the 60s-early 70s output contained some of the studio's best work.
'Sink Pink' is a Pink Panther take on the classic 'Noah's Ark' story and is a case of having enough elements of the classic story while also having the usual style of humour and same tone as seen in the previous Pink Panther cartoons. 'Sink Pink' does a very nice job with its take on the story and is very good as a cartoon. It is not one of the best of the series and is a slight disappointment after two great previous cartoons, but any fan of the character and of the series shouldn't have too much of a problem enjoying it.
It's not flawless. While stereotyping is not always a problem, it can be if it's unsubtle, exaggerated and unneeded. 'Sink Pink' with the hunter and Texan for me does fit into that category. It isn't problematic enough to make the rest of Sink Pink any less enjoyable.
Everything else is fine. The story is told in a hugely entertaining, energetic yet also gently slinky way. The gags are funny and delivered at a good pace. 'Sink Pink' also marks one of few times where Pink speaks, his lines fit his fun, cool persona and didn't feel out of place at all. There is definitely a Looney Tunes feel to the humour, almost like a homage, and it worked.
Animation is simple, but colourful and never too rough or simplistic. The music is still very catchy and memorable, the way it sticks in your head is in an infectious in alternative to annoying way. Pinky always has been a strong character, and he is still the same cool and likable character that we know him for.
Overall, very good and fun, Pink Panther fans will not be disappointed. 8/10.
