Screen Daily reports that IFC has picked up the distribution rights for The Horde, the French zombie film by writer/directors Yannick Dahan and Benjamin Rocher.

Earlier this year, IFC brought Norwegian Nazi zombie movie Dead Snow to the U.S., which could mean good things for The Horde's quality.

No release date has been mentioned so far. So, instead, here's the synopsis:

North of Paris. In order to avenge the murder of one of their own by a group of ruthless gangsters, four corrupt cops go on a rampage in a condemned building serving as the mobster’s hideout. Now trapped, the officers are about to be executed when the unimaginable occurs: hordes of bloodthirsty, cannibalistic creatures invade the building, savagely attacking everyone. Unexpected alliances are made when their lives are threatened by the unthinkable.

The 10 Greatest Zombie Movies Ever Made

29 October 2009 10:49 AM, PDT | MovieRetriever | See recent MovieRetriever news »

Oct 29, 2009

Is there anyone out there that doesn’t enjoy a good zombie movie? The recent success of Zombieland, the popularity of the cinema of the undead suggests that there isn’t. Zombie Cinema is a genre that owes its beginning to the seminal Night of the Living Dead in the late 1960s. But, it’s also one that has shown remarkable growth over the last few years as renewed interest in the genre has produced films like 28 Days Later, Dead Snow, Pontypool, and even remakes of some of the genres more enduring ...Read more at MovieRetriever.com »

Review: Dead Snow

8 October 2009 3:39 PM, PDT | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

Adam Mast reviews the Nazi-zombie flick!

Nazis are villainous enough, but - as the gleefully gory Dead Snow so chillingly illustrates - Nazi zombies are the personification of pure evil.

As Dead Snow opens, a group of Norwegian twenty-somethings are making their way to an isolated weekend retreat. Their plans? To ski, party, and get haked. The plans are cut short however, when murderous Nazi zombies show up and spoil the party.

Dead Snow certainly has a familiar set up. With it's intentionally obvious first act and self referential humor, this film knows exactly what it wants to be; a blood drenched slice of playful zombie horror. Once the Nazi zombies make their appearance, Dead Snow really comes alive in a relentless, lively bit of gory fun that evoked big time cheers from the audience I screened it with.

There are several memorable moments to speak of in Dead Snow »

Trailer: The Revenant

The film played with Dead Snow in a double feature at the 2009 After Dark Film Festival and received the Silver Award for best independent feature film. The film also had a preliminary screening at the Xanadu Sci Fi, Horror and Fantasy Convention in Las Vegas where it won "Best Feature Film" at the closing awards ceremony. In May, 2009, The Revenant was screened at the Zompire Undead Film Festival in Portland, Oregon, where it won the "Jury Award for Best Feature and Best Director", plus the "Audience Award for Best of Festival." The Revenant is a story about an ancient pestilence recurring to infect modern society. Officer First Class Bart Gregory is killed while fighting in Middle East. I'm not one for that weird horror/comedy genre. I really did not enjoy Sam Raimi's Drag Me To Hell. And there are very few exceptions to this rule for me (see: Dead Snow). But director Ruben Fleischer could really change my mind, in a big way. His feature-length directorial debut, Zombieland, is hilarious, and breathes new life into the zombie genre just when it needed the most (the vampires have been leading the game for years now).

The premise is like most zombie films: most of the world dies, survivors deal with zombies. The film is narrated by Columbus (Jesse Eisenberg). He's an introverted gamer with irritable bowel syndrome who chooses to spend his weekends at home playing World of War »

DreamWorks gets busy with ‘Xombies’

1 October 2009 8:28 AM, PDT | ReelLoop.com | See recent Reel Loop news »

Zombies are becoming the new vampire.

DreamWorks is set to adapt Xombies, the hit web cartoon/comic written by James Farr. Revolving around a thoughtful zombie named Dirge, our heroic member of the undead protects a little girl from the deadly rampages of Zombies. The studio is looking to nab Star Trek writers Alex Kurtzman and Robert Oci to produce, with an adapted script from Will Beall.

Xombie’s first story was released as a Flash-based cartoon with a five-part comic miniseries published by Devil’s Due.

Zombies have always had a proud place in American cinema (and Swedish! Check out Dead Snow for details) and viewers can get another whiff of rotting bodies with the upcoming black comedy Zombieland.

Fango has been the written witness of the horror scene around the world for over three decades. Sitges can only bow and pay due respect with a celebration for the fans.”

Star Trek Writers Checking Out Xombies

23 September 2009 12:50 AM, PDT | FilmShaft.com | See recent FilmShaft.com news »

Dreamworks and the writing tag team behind Star Trek, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci are looking at zombies, no scratch that – Xombies!

The studio is in talks to buy the film rights for Xombie, the Devil’s Due comic book by James Farr about a zombie cop named Dirge who sets out to save what is left of humanity after zombies go on the rampage, according to The Hollywood Reporter:

DreamWorks is in negotiations to acquire the source material. The logline for the movie version is being kept under wraps.

If deals are closed, Cindi Rice and John Frank Rosenblum of Epic Level Entertainment would exec produce along with Kurtzman/Orci’s Bobby Cohen and Steven T. Puri.

Zombies have clearly become the creature of choice recently, with small budget movies like Dead Snow and The Fourth Reich (in theatres next year) and of course Woody Harrelson’s black comedy »

'Hansel and Gretel' Getting Ready To Kick Ass, With or Without Will Ferrell

17 September 2009 9:00 AM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

There are some projects that you hope will be awesome, and others that you know will be an instant classic. Personally, I’m wiling to put my money down on “Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters,” a film that exists as little more than a rough script at the moment – but that director/producer/all-around funnyman Adam McKay assured me will get turned into something special soon.

“Oh, I love that project,” the “Funny or Die” co-founder and frequent Will Ferrell collaborator enthused. “That’s really chugging along.”

Written and soon-to-be directed by Norwegian filmmaker Tommy Wirkola, McKay told me that both he and Ferrell are fans of Wirkola’s beloved, little-seen Nazi zombie film “Dead Snow.” “It’s the guy who did the zombie Nazi pic, so it’s a bad-ass movie,” the “Talladega Nights” director said of his “Hansel” collaborator. “It’s in the vein of an ‘Evil Dead II’ or ‘Army of Darkness. »

Dead Snow (Død Snø)

Directed by: Tommy Wirkola

Cast: Vegar Hoel, Charlotte Frogner

Running Time: 1 hr 30 mins

Rating: Unrated

Release Date: September 11, 2009

Plot: A group of medical students travel to a secluded mountain cabin to spend a weekend engaging in drunken sex and winter sports. Unfortunately, the hills surrounding the cabin are full of Nazi Zombies! So that’s going to be a problem.

Who’s It For? If you like slasher films and don’t mind subtitles, this is for you.

Expectations: Zombies are badass, Nazis are evil, so Nazi Zombies must be on a whole new unimaginable level, right? Right?

Scorecard (0-10)

Actors:

Vegar Hoel as Martin: Martin’s a medical student who’s afraid of blood, so you know that he’s going to have issues when the zombies show up. Hoel’s credible in his role but I never really liked him, or cared if he lived. »
