The anthology horror film is back in the wake of the success of chapter-style horror films like The Theatre Bizarre (2011) and its announced follow-up, V/H/S (2012), the soon-to-be-released sequel V/H/S 2 (2013) and The ABC’s of Death (2012).
While this movement generates a good deal of conversation about the fondly remembered Amicus productions of the 1960’s and 1970’s like Dr. Terror’s House Of Horrors (Freddie Francis, 1965), Torture Garden (Freddie Francis, 1967), The House That Dripped Blood (Peter Duffell, 1971) and Asylum (Roy Ward Baker, 1972) among others, the comparison is not exactly accurate across the board.
While the segments of V/H/S are unified by shared visual style and a wraparound story, The Theatre Bizarre and The ABC’s of Death come off as collections of essentially unrelated horror short films loosely bound by a flimsy wraparound segment in the case of The Theatre Bizarre or a basic concept as...

Dir. Sheldon Candis and actor Michael Rainey Jr
Writer/director Sheldon Candis and producer Jason Berman talk with Josh Welsh, Film Independent’s Director of Artist Development, about their feature film Luv, which tells the story of William “Woody” Watson, a shy 11-year old boy who is forced to face the unpleasant truth about his only father figure during one harrowing day on the mean streets of Baltimore. Luv will have its world premiere in the narrative competition at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival.
First off, congratulations on finishing Luv, and of course for getting into Sundance! Sheldon, what’s your background and how did you get into film?
Sheldon Candis: I was born in Baltimore. Half of my childhood was there and the other half in Statesville, Nc. My love for movies came from two places: One, my father would religiously take my mom and me to see movies...

No one grows up with hopes and dreams to be a short filmmaker. People who want to make films aspire to make features and it takes time to realize the short subject is one of the best steps to achieving that goal. However, in the case of director Kristoffer Aaron Morgan, writer Eric Vespe and their short film No Way Out, they did things backwards. Before No Way Out was even conceived, Vespe, best known as Quint from Ain't It Cool News, and Morgan had already sold Dimension the rights [1] to The Home, their feature length, haunted nursing home movie. But when pre-production on that film was put on hiatus, the pair decided a short might be a good way to practice their craft and simultaneously hang with some of their Austin, Texas film friends. Two thousand dollars later, they have No Way Out, a 10-minute short starring A.J.

They may not get a lot of press, but short films and short filmmakers are the lifeblood of film festivals. They are the place to discover great new filmmakers. Before Steven Spielberg blew up with "Jaws," he was a 22-year-old kid with a short called "Amblin." Before Martin Scorsese reinvented the gangster genre with "Mean Streets," he was a film student with a six minute movie called "The Big Shave." Before they were famous filmmakers, they were short filmmakers.
Short films are a great way to get your foot in the door of Hollywood, but if you've never made a short before, it may be tough to know how to even open that door in the first place. With that in mind, we recruited the team behind the Fantastic Fest short "No Way Out" -- actor A.J. Bowen (a.k.a. one of the stars of the multiple Fantastic...

Mark Wahlberg is starring in Contraband right now -- the film is a remake of the well-regarded thriller Reykjavik-Rotterdam, with Baltasar Kormakur, an actor in the original, directing the new version. The film follows a one-time smuggler (Wahlberg) who has taken a straight job as a security guard, but gets pulled back into illegal activity. Now the ever-reliable J.K. Simmons is on board as a captain. The also-reliable Ben Foster is the brother-in-law of the main character and the guy that pulls him back into the Life; Kate Beckinsale, Giovanni Ribisi, Diego Luna and Lukas Haas are also on board. [Av Club [1] -- this interview is wonderful and a must-read for fans of the actor.] After the break, Michelle Rodriguez goes to The Home and Robin McLeavy joins Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter after all. Michelle Rodriguez says her next film will be a horror picture called The Home that takes place in a haunted nursing home.

Currently to be seen kicking alien asses in Battle: Los Angeles, Michelle Rodriguez' next film looks set to be supernatural rather than intergalactic: she's revealed that she's almost certainly signing on for The Home.Written by Eric Vespe (known to some as AICN writer Quint), the screenplay attracted some heavyweight attention earlier this year, with Peter Jackson taking it under his wing and the Weinsteins' Dimension picking it up for distribution. The film involves scary goings-on at a haunted nursing home, with the originally-released synopsis describing the main character as a firefighter sent there to recuperate when "he" is involved in a rescue gone wrong. There's no mention yet of Rodriguez' role, but given her Vasquez-channelling as-tough-as-the-guys screen persona, we wonder if "he" has now become "she"...Early reports also had Brian Cox, Louis Gosset Jr, Ed Asner, Cloris Leachman and Fionnula Flanagan attached, as well as Louise Fletcher.

The horror game is typically fodder for the younger generations and as such, usually stars teenagers or twenty-somethings. Not The Home. The Robert Rodriguez produced thriller is set in a rehab community troubled by numerous reports from elderly patients of things going bump in the night. At first the happenings are pawned off as dementia side effects, but after an injured firefighter moves in, the claims are taken a lot more seriously. Rumors have everyone from Brian Cox to Cloris Leachman to Ed Asner on board, but we finally have some sort of confirmation from Michelle Rodriguez of all people. She'll probably be in it. Here’s news of an interesting project which has been picked up by producer Bob Weinstein’s genre wing Dimension Films, and has received a helping hand from a master of the trade.
The film is entitled The Home and it tells the story of a firefighter injuring in the line of duty and convalescing in a rest home, who soon realises that something evil is lurking within the place, and is responsible for attacks on the elderly residents. In New Orleans, January 6 is the first day you can buy a king cake before Mardi Gras ... it's the Feast of Epiphany, or Three Kings' Day. So all I can think about today is cake. Fortunately, I'm distracting myself with a lot of local film news, some of which is really good.
My favorite news this week: Local filmmaker Kristoffer Aaron Morgan's upcoming film production The Home has been picked up by Dimension Films (the Weinsteins' horror-movie company). Morgan and Eric Vespe wrote the script for this horror movie. Morgan is someone I always see at Alamo Drafthouse movies and film fests (I took the photo of him at right at Fantastic Fest 2009), and lots of you probably know Vespe under his pen name of Quint at Ain't It Cool News. The Home will be shooting in Austin soon, and will star Cloris Leachman, Louise Fletcher, Brian Cox and Ed Asner.

The news that Dimension Films has picked up a developing horror project called The Home may not sound that thrilling-- Dimension has a track record with horror, after all, and The Home is an original pitch that nobody knows much about yet. But if you follow the world of online movie blogs like this one, you may recognize the name of co-writer Eric Vespe, or know him better as Quint from Ain't It Cool News. That's right, one of our own-- along with his collaborator and the project's director, Aaron Morgan-- has made it to the big time. Next time you want to accuse us all of being failed filmmakers who just criticize other peoples' movies instead, well, in your face! Slashfilm broke the news, though if you look at Aaron's Twitter feed you can see he's at least confirming the exciting news, and also that they're into day 3 of...

Like most films, The Home has had a rocky road to getting made, but it looks like the sailing through Cthulu-infested waters will be smoother now that Dimension Films has agreed to release the film. As reported before, the film puts Ed Asner, Cloris Leachman, Brian Cox, Fionnula Flanagan, Louise Fletcher and Louis Gossett, Jr (and whatever young leads are announced) into an old folks home and tortures them with Knb-designed practical monsters until their screams and uneaten no-sugar-added apple sauce cups are used for the building’s fuel. Calls to filmmaker Kristoffer Aaron Morgan went unanswered, which I’ll assume means, “we want to have the film done by Fantastic Fest.” Morgan most recently had his short, yet hilariously nutritious, take on zombies hit said fest as one of the infamous bumpers. You can watch it after the jump. In consideration of full disclosure, Fsr publisher Neil Miller is the bearded zombie in the blue button...

The Home is an original horror film written by Morgan and Eric Vespe who most of you may know as Quint from Ain’t It Cool News. It also has a great cast of actors which includes Brian Cox (X-Men), Cloris Leachman (Young Frankenstein), Louise Fletcher (One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest), Louis Gossett Jr. (The Invaders), Ed Asner (Up, The Mod Squad), and Fionnula Flanagan (Lost).
The story follows a young man who is "nearly killed during a horrible accident that leaves him physically and emotionally scarred. He is taken to a secluded nursing home to recuperate, where the elderly residents appear to be suffering from crazy delusions. But after witnessing a violent attack, he soon realizes that the screams behind...

The cast for "The Home" includes Brian Cox, Louise Fletcher, Fionnula Flanagan, Cloris Leachman, Ed Asner and Louis Gossett Jr. "Machete" producer Elizabeth Avellan is on board the production with co-producer Elijah Wood. Man, talk about being wonderfully star-studded in front of and behind the camera."The Home" tells the story of a firefighter who is nearly killed during a failed rescue that leaves him physically and emotionally scarred. To recuperate, he is taken to a secluded nursing home where the elderly residents appear to be suffering from delusions. But after witnessing a violent attack,...

[1] I have just heard that Bob Weinstein and Dimension Films have acquired Kristoffer Aaron Morgan's H.P. Lovecraftian horror film The Home. I'm happy to hear that Dimension Films wants to release an original movie again. The Home seems like a film they would have invested in back in the mid-1990's. It seems like now-a-days, they're concentrating mostly on sequels, remakes and un-funny parody movies. No word on if Dimension will be releasing the film theatrically or just home video. I'm sure, at very least, The Home will have a film festival run. Penned by Morgan alongside Eric Vespe (better known to film geeks at Quint from Ain't It Cool News), the story has been described as a "character driven, atmospheric, twisted creature flick". The Home tells the story of a firefighter who "is nearly killed during a failed rescue that leaves him physically and emotionally scarred. To recuperate,...

Dimension Films has acquired distribution rights to 'The Home,' an old folks' home-set horror movie starring Ed Asner, Louis Gossett Jr., Louise Fletcher and Cloris Leachman. Pre-production began this week on the Kristoffer Aaron Morgan-directed film, which will go in front of cameras next month in Austin, TX. Pictured above is a piece of Weta-designed concept art for the film.
After directorship passing back and forth between the two, it looks like the big screen adaptation of sci-fi novel 'Cloud Atlas' will be directed by Tom Tykwer and the Wachowskis. That's according to Natalie Portman, at least, who will have some kind of role in the film since she's the one who first introduced all of the parties to David Mitchell's novel.

Kristoffer Aaron Morgan and Eric Vespe have a, well, home for their upcoming feature-length horror film The Home . Morgan will direct from a script he penned with Vespe ("Quint" from Ain't It Cool News). Brian Cox, Cloris Leachman, Louise Fletcher, Louis Gossett Jr., Ed Asner and Fionnula Flanagan are locked in to star. Weta did some early conceptual art, however, Knb Effects is stepping in to handle the practical monsters. As the New Yorker pointed out, on the internet, nobody knows you're a dog. So it's with some trepidation that I report that erstwhile hobbit Elijah Wood has started a Twitter account. He's a pretty plugged-in, hipstery dude, so I can totally buy that he's decided to tweet away, but just keep in mind, it could be some 47 year-old Korean business man with a Tom Bombadil action figure who wrote this typo-filled first tweet: "Hello, Twiiter. I've finally succumbed to your wiles." Update: It seems like it's the real deal, having been vouched for by Aaron Morgan, the director of The Home, which was co-produced by Wood. So there you have it. Ball's in your court, Peregrin Took![@woodelijah]...

When Don Coscarelli populated Bubba Ho Tep almost entirely with senior citizens my initial response was what a great idea that was for a horror film. Ho Tep plays it mostly for laughs, of course, but think about it. Old folks' homes are places that most - if we're honest - find a little bit uncomfortable, a little bit alien. They are filled with people who have led rich lives but who are now physically frail and often mentally suspect as their faculties break down. And, mostly, they force us to confront our own mortality. Perfect fodder for horror then, though you arguably may not want the flashes of gratuitous nudity that frequently come with the genre.

Last year we wrote about the announcement of a new indie horror project in the works called The Home, written by AICN's Eric Vespe, to be directed by Kristoffer Aaron Morgan. They've been working on putting together the production for a while and we've been waiting to hear news about it. Well, Bloody-Disgusting received a big casting scoop today for this film, which looks like it might have an impressive cast lined-up. Although not officially signed yet, they're in discussions with Brian Cox (Zodiac, Trick 'r Treat, Red, The Escapist) and Cloris Leachman (Young Frankenstein, You Again) to star, with a few others set as well. In addition to those two, Louise Fletcher, Louis Gossett Jr., Edward Asner and Fionnula Flanagan have also all joined cast. As a reminder, here's a the plot: The Home unfolds after a young man is nearly killed during a horrible accident that leaves him...

Most movies these days chronicle the generic and .drama. filled lives of good-looking, in-shape kids in their late teens or early-20s, finding ways to get unnecessarily sweaty and breathy when they talk. Not The Home, though. From rookie director Kristoffer Aaron Morgan and writer AICN alumni Eric Vespe (better known as Quint over there), The Home takes a haunted geriatric care facility and fills it with creepy crawlies. And I.m not just talking about the old folks. Film School Rejects have it that four big time seniors have been added to the cast, and if it.s true, we might have something great on our hands. Ed Asner (Carl in Up), Louis Gossett Jr (Oscar winner for An Officer and a Gentlemen), Louise Fletcher (Nurse Ratched from One Flew Over The Cuckoo.s Nest), and finally Fionnula Flanagan (most recently found creeping up the last couple seasons of...

Director Kristoffer Aaron Morgan's The Home is really filling out. Reports are surfacing about a slew of actors joining the cast. A young man moves into a nursing home to recuperate from a massive accident, and starts to realize that the delusions suffered by his elderly roommates may not be dementia. Just who can you expect to see in The Home? Louise Fletcher (Flowers in the Attic), Louis Gossett Jr.(Jaws 3D), Edward Asner, and Fionnula Flanagan have all be signed to the film. Word has it that Cloris Leachman and Brian Cox are also in talks to join the cast. Source: Bloody-Disgusting.com...

We’ve reported on The Home before because of the shiver-inducing concept art created by Weta, and it looks like the show might finally be on the road to getting off the road at a secure location where they can start filming frightening things attacking senior citizens. The list of senior citizens now includes Oscar winner (and film nerd favorite) Louise Fletcher, Oscar winner Louis Gossett Jr, Ed Asner, and Fionnula Flanagan (a veteran of stage, screen, and the creepiest character on Lost). Plus, the production is in talks to secure both Brian Cox and Cloris Leachman. In the effort of full disclosure, I’ve lost poker money to both director Kristoffer Aaron Morgan and writer Eric Vespe, but that seething bitterness I feel toward that loss is overcome by a truly strong list of actors that I think anyone would raise an eyebrow at. It’s Nurse Ratched! And Mary Tyler Moore’s boss! And...

Some incredible news fluttered in our ear as we've confirmed that Louise Fletcher (Flowers in the Attic, Exorcist II, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest), Louis Gossett Jr. (Enemy Mine, The Invaders, Jaws 3D), Edward Asner (Up, "The Mod Squad," "The Invaders," "Mission: Impossible"), and Fionnula Flanagan are all signed on to star inKristoffer Aaron Morgan's H.P. Lovecraftian The Home, which was penned by both Morgan and AICN writer Eric Vespe. It's also worth noting that Brian Cox (Red, Rise of the Apes, Trick 'r Treat) and Cloris Leachman (Young Frankenstein, Lake Placid 2, Scary Movie 2) are both in discussions. Talk about an astounding cast. There are a few other names being tossed around that will knock your socks off, but it's a bit premature to reveal.

Being that we couldn’t make Sundance this year we have decided to try and cover the tidbits of it anyway. We have chosen to use Twitter as our main resource for telling you what is hip, cool and worth knowing about this year’s Sundance Film Festival 2K10.
Some our close blog buddies and others are there as well, @rejects, @firstshowing, @slashfilm and @wearegeeks, so we will be looking at their tweets and some of the comments from their sites to give you the best buzz from the bloggers catching it all.
Day 1/Day 2
First off according to @firstshowing its snowing and that is almost the best part, sure its cold but according to Mr. Billington thats the best and most beautiful part. First off Alex seemed to not like Howl, a mockumentary about poet Allen Ginsberg (played by James Franco).
After Howl, everyone saw Spike Jonze’s newest short film I’m Here.

I've been wanting to see the concept for The Home come to life in brilliant flashing images on a silver screen ever since I first heard it. Just think: a mentally and physically scarred firefighter, a house that manifests itself and torments all the elderly people inside, and the inevitable sequel The Home Alone wherein Macaulay Culkin goes insane inside a living house that doesn't like having paint cans hung from its rafters. It's one of the more innovative horror concepts I've heard tale of in a while, so of course I'm keeping an ear to the ground for any developments. So far, it's about where it was during the last update. Weta is still involved, Elijah Wood is still one of the producers, but now he's at least claiming he wants a 2009 start date. During an interview with Attack of the Show, Wood discussed his role in 9 and told Olivia Munn and crew some background for...
