Mary Alice tells us it's not hard to spot a mother who works outside the home: as we watch several women, including Lynette, rushing off to work putting on shoes, make-up, and eating breakfast. Then Susan spies MJ and wonders why he's still in his PJ's since they'll be late for both their first days at school. He promptly vomits. She rushes off to deposit him with Mike who protests and Susan says it's time he steps up. MJ is sad to see her go. Susan walks off, guilt etched on her face.
Mary Alice returns to tell us about what awaits exhausted people coming home after sundown: some are met by faithful pets, others dry martinis, others by dinner. Then there are those who return to discover unpleasant surprises, as Susan grabs a note from her door that says MJ is with Katherine. She's annoyed. Katherine made him soup, read him a story, and taught him how to play blackjack. Mike had to attend to a plumbing emergency. Susan thanks Katherine for helping out. As they leave MJ goes to grab Katherine in a hug.
Bree and Orson have arrived at Andrew and doctor boyfriend's new home, which the older couple bought. Orson admires the decor and Dr. Boyfriend says Andrew is the one with the taste. Andrew is running late. He's cleaning up a mess involving bacon at a bar mitzvah. Orson admires some cut crystal. Dr. Boyfriend says that Andrew has expensive taste and luckily they can afford it since Bree gave him a big raise. Orson balks at this news and Bree tries to distract him. Orson is obviously upset.
At dinner with Carlos' boss, the boss and his wife thank the Solis' for saving their marriage. Since he hired Carlos they've been able to spend more time together. Brad, the boss, hopes Gaby is okay with Carlos being gone so much. She says it will be fine once his bonus check arrives. Brad and his wife exchange a look. Brad tells him that their forgoing the bonuses because of the economy. Gaby is aghast.
Scavo's is empty and the employees stand around. Lynette wants to close up early. Tom has an idea. He has the staff doff it's aprons and sit by the windows so the restaurant looks full. Lynette is not impressed by this idea. She says they need to face facts. He says it's a slump. She says it's not, and that they're a heartbeat away from going bankrupt. He tells her to have faith. She says she has for seven years and if they sell now they can escape with their dignity and maybe some money but if they keep going they'll lose everything. Tom flat out says no. He says he won't be a failure.
Edie and Dave have returned from a bike ride and she wants to go to a fancy lunch. He says she likes to live well. She says why not, life is brief and mostly sucks, so you might as well grab as much as you can while you're on this side of the dirt. He says okay to lunch. So she pushes for a weekend getaway at a five star hotel and spa. He says he doesn't know. She asks if he hears a buzzing noise. He says he doesn't hear it. He tries to distract her saying he likes the hotel idea. She heads off to book their trips and he grabs a briefcase from the closet full of pill bottles and a cell phone. The phone belongs to the doctor Dave killed and there's a message from his secretary saying she got his latest text but people are freaking out about him being missing and if he doesn't return for an upcoming staff meeting she's going to have to admit she doesn't know where he is.
Cut to Dave approaching Mike gardening in his yard. He asks if he and Katherine want to go camping this weekend. Mike says he'll try to convince Katherine and says he thinks it will be fun. Dave walks away and says, in a sinister tone, that it will be.
In the test kitchen Orson is admiring Andrew's Mont Blanc pen and steaming over his raise. Andrew is surprised he heard about that. Bree comes in with an emergency, but Andrew comes up with an elegant solution that shows he planned ahead and will help them get a higher fee. Bree compliments him and asks Orson what they would do without Andrew. Orson replies that he's worth every penny Bree pays him, and how many pennies would that be? Bree refuses to tell him.
Orson calls the bank to find out for himself but gets tripped up by the need for a password. He's told it's the name of her childhood pet. He tries different names and the guy gets hip to the fact that Orson isn't authorized.
Lynette enters the kitchen and all the kids are sitting around the table. The kids say Tom called a family meeting. Lynette tries to pre-break the news that they're probably selling the restaurant and to support daddy. Tom comes in and says that he had to let the staff go. Then he says the kids will be the new wait staff. They all stare at Lynette who wonders what he's thinking. Tom says he and Lynette can handle days and the kids can help on nights and weekends. Parker says at the risk of sounding spoiled, no. Tom says it will be fantastic and they might start making a profit if they don't have to pay for labor. Porter can't believe they won't even get paid. Penny points out that at 9, that's not even legal. Tom upgrades her to 15. Parker appeals to Lynette. Lynette pulls Tom aside and says it's time to pack it in. He says he has to do everything to save the place. Lynette says, "okay, fine." The kids sigh and Porter says when they're old the kids are putting her and Tom into the cheapest nursing home they can find.
Gaby breaks the news to the jeweler that she can't pay for her new bracelet. The jeweler apologizes just as Carlos' boss walks by the shop. Gaby runs after him and catches him in his car making out with a blond, not his wife. He pulls away quickly after seeing her see him.
Just as Gaby runs into her house bursting with news she turns to see Carlos with Brad. Before she can spill Brad announces that he appealed to the CFO to get Carlos his bonus. Gaby asks how much. Brad says twenty grand. Gaby calls it a great jumping off point. Brad goes up to 25 as Carlos starts to freak. Gaby keeps pushing. Brad goes up to thirty thousand. Carlos says he doesn't know what to say. Brad says since Carlos is the only one getting a bonus then they should all agree to not say anything. They all agree.
In the test kitchen Orson tries to trick Bree into telling him the name of her childhood pet by explaining about porn names: childhood pet plus street name. She says she's busy making a buffet for 200 and she has no time to explore her mythical adult film career. Orson says fine, but it's answers like that that make people think Bree is rigid. She caves and says Coco Saugatuck. He zips off. And then she says two other names because she had three different dogs and moved around a lot. Orson freaks and makes her focus on her favorite. Munchie.
At a busy Scavo's, Tom and Lynette and the kids are overwhelmed. Tom's behind on food, Penny has lost her band-aid at the salad station, Parker is shorting the customers intentionally and Porter and Preston are arguing over tables. Tom thinks things are running smoothly and says he won't say I told you so.
Mike arrives at Susan's to discuss Katherine taking care of MJ. Susan is mad she wasn't told and just in general. Mike says too bad, they both work, Katherine has free time, it's better for everyone -- ergo, Mike says, Katherine will be picking up MJ from school on Friday. Susan says no. He reminds her he has custody on Fridays. To which she agreed, she says, so he could spend time with MJ. She threatens to take him back to court to hammer out a different agreement. Mike is about to reply when MJ comes in and asks if they're fighting. Susan says they're just trying to figure out what's best for him. Mike says he'll see MJ Friday when he picks him up from school.
Orson confronts Bree with Andrew's salary. She's mad he found out, and says it's shameful how he did. He says what she's paying Andrew is shameful. She defends how integral Andrew is to the company. Orson points out that he's Bree's husband. He says what stinks is that he's more educated then all of them having gone to grad school and being a dentist. She points out that he is now a caterer, being paid fairly based on his expertise and contribution. Orson is saying it's not about money but value and that she's saying he's worthless. She says she's really saying that he's just worth...less.
The boss' wife arrives at the Solis house asking Gaby about a little detective work she needs done about her husband. Gaby almost spills before the wife explains she wants to buy him a new golf club. Gaby counsels her to not spend too much. Carlos enters and overhears them talking about how she and Brad have stopped going to counseling since their relationship is solid now. Gaby points out that ice is solid too until it cracks and you're drowning in freezing water. She advises her to stay in counseling. Carlos calls Gaby out onto the porch wanting to know why she's repaying his boss the bonus by telling his wife they need marriage counseling. Gaby says she thinks they do. Carlos says it's none of their business and that Brad's relationship is good. Gaby asks, with Maria his wife... or the blond she saw him kissing the day before? Carlos doesn't believe it. Gaby explains about the bonus. Carlos realizes that this is blackmail and thinks Gaby's coming to her senses. He says they need to get in there and tell her. Gaby doesn't want to forfeit the bonus and thinks by not telling they're the good guys. He says it doesn't feel like it.
Susan marches over to Katherine's and raps on the door. Katherine and MJ are wearing chef's hats and cooking -- there was another plumbing emergency. Susan is mad, but MJ wants to stay and make brownies. Susan says they can make brownies at home. MJ tattles that Katherine says box brownies aren't real brownies, like those made from scratch. Susan stares at her and Katherine tries to recover by saying "except when your Mommy makes them with love." Susan and MJ leave. Katherine whips off her hat and stops them and says to Susan she was trying to help. Susan says she doesn't want help but for Mike to stick to the plan of watching MJ on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday and not pawn him off to his girlfriend. Katherine sighs. MJ returns to thank her.
At Scavo's Porter spies a large party entering the restaurant on a Saturday night. They're high school kids. Porter and Preston decide to take a break. Lynette and Tom try to stop them. P & P don't want to wait on these particular high school classmates because it's full of bullies. Porter say he can't take the embarrassment. Tom hotly points out that Porter is not embarrassed when the money the family makes pays for his clothes. Lynette tries to defuse the situation by saying she'll take the table. Tom grabs her arm and stops her, and says as Porter and Preston's father and boss he's ordering them to do it. Or what, Porter wonders, he'll fire them? Tom freaks and grabs Porter by his collar and starts shaking him and banging him into the wall saying this isn't a joke, this restaurant is his life, as Lynette tries to make him stop. Parker interrupts saying he just sat a twelve top and wonders who'll be taking it. Tom says he will and stalks off as everyone else looks traumatized.
At the end of the night, Lynette goes over to Tom, who's doing the books on the counter. She leans in. He says that he's getting their accounts in order. If they're going to sell the place, they should know how much it's worth. She grabs his chin and looks him in the eye and kisses him gently. They start to make out. She says, suggestively, that it can wait until morning. He sadly clicks off the open sign.
Edie comes in and says she booked them that spa-hotel getaway. Dave says he forgot this was the weekend he promised to camp with Mike and it's the only weekend that works for him. Edie says he's on his own then, she doesn't camp. Dave tells Edie not to mention to Katherine that she isn't coming, since Mike really wants Katherine to go. After making him promise the spa weekend the following weekend, Edie says she won't breathe a word and flounces off. Dave goes into the closet and sends a text message as the dead doctor saying he'll be back by the 15th.
Gaby enters the living room to discover Brad and Maria with Carlos. Maria's happy to announce that she and Brad are pregnant. Gaby and Carlos feign happiness. There's more, Maria wants Gaby and Carlos to be the godparents. Carlos says "yay!" Maria says they're such good people that they want the Solis' to be a good influence on their child. Gaby wonders how they can say no and hugs Maria. Maria notices Gaby got her bracelet after all. Gaby admits she's not enjoying it as much as she thought she would.
Susan sets MJ up with lunch and a movie and says she's going to jump in the shower. MJ turns up his nose at crust-less PBJ and says he wants a panini and wonders if they have any provolone. Susan says she doesn't know how to make a panini and nope, no provolone on hand. He asks if they can borrow some from Katherine. She says in this house they don't eat pretentious cheeses, but good American peanut butter. Susan heads to the shower. MJ heads to Katherine's house and asks for a panini. She lets him in and wonders if Susan knows he's there. He just comes in. Susan comes out of the shower to discover him gone and she goes tearing up the street calling his name and spies him in Katherine's kitchen. After sending him outside to wait, Katherine says he showed up and seemed hungry. Susan wonders if she's implying that she doesn't feed him. Katherine says maybe he just wanted to see her. Susan points out that's because Katherine makes it like Disneyland. Susan thinks Katherine is trying to get her hooks deeper into Mike by showing how great she treats MJ. Katherine points out that just she's being nice to the child of the man she's dating, that doesn't make her evil. Not evil, Susan counters, devious. Susan says her big plan will not work since MJ will no longer be allowed at Katherine's house. Katherine says that's going to be tricky since Mike is moving in on the first of the month so MJ will be spending a lot of time there. Susan is upset.
Orson enters a bustling test kitchen. Andrew has encountered a problem he needs to take care of and asks Orson to hold down the fort. Orson compliments Andrew on his conscientiousness, Andrew graciously thanks him. Orson spies his Montblanc pen and steals it.
Mary Alice returns to tell us that just after sunrise people leave their homes to go to work, they do this so: they can provide a better life for their families (Susan at work); so they can afford nice things (Carlos in a boardroom); so they can have a reason to get up in the morning (Tom staring out the window of Scavo's.) And when they get home from work some begin counting the days until their next vacation, as we see Dave enter the garage, pull out a bag and in turn pull out a gun.
