Beatlemania is alive and well on planet Earth. Director Ron Howard’s documentary “The Beatles: Eight Days a Week – The Touring Years” has been filling theaters around the world despite Hulu releasing the film on its streaming platform the same weekend as the doc’s U.S. theatrical release.

What was initially planned as a one-week U.S. theatrical run in 85 theaters has expanded to 180 cinemas, with nearly every venue holding the movie over for a second week, according to Richard Abramowitz, president of specialty distributor Abramorama. Appetite for the film is so strong that some Beatles fans have even emailed producer Nigel Sinclair’s White Horse Pictures complaining that the movie wasn’t being shown in their town.

Welcome back to the Weekend Warrior, your weekly look at the new movies hitting theaters this weekend, as well as other cool events and things to check out.
This Past Weekend:
Tom Hanks and Clint Eastwood’s real-life drama about airline pilot Sully (Warner Bros.) far surpassed all expectations, making nearly $10 million more than my prediction with an opening weekend of $35 million in 3,525 theaters, also making it one of the biggest openings for a movie opening the weekend after Labor Day. The Screen Gems thriller When the Bough Breaks disappointed compared to some of their similar releases, taking second place with around where we predicted with around $14 million. The lower profile animated film The Wild Life (Summit/Lionsgate) did end up in fifth place behind Don’t Breathe and Suicide Squad, but with a measly $3.3 million in 2,493 theaters. As expected, Relativity’s theatrical return with its own horror/thriller The Disappointments Room...

127 Hours (20th Century Fox) Harrowing true story of Aron Ralston (James Franco, in another fine turn), an extreme outdoorsman who finds himself trapped in a remote Utah canyon, his arm pinned between two boulders, with no help nearby, no communication to the outside world, and dim prospects for survival, to say the least. Director Danny Boyle manages to prove again that he’s one of the finest filmmakers working today by making a subject that is seemingly uncinematic a true example of pure cinema. Inventive, breathtaking, funny, and horrifying, often all at once. Amber Tamblyn and Kate Mara make a memorable, brief appearance as hikers who connect with Ralston during his journey. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Commentary by Boyle, producer Christian Colson, co-writer Simon Beaufoy; Deleted scenes; Featurettes. Widescreen. Dolby and DTS-hd 5.1 surround.

I have never been a sports fan. I have only begun to follow New York sports teams in the past 2 years, so I went into The Last Play at Shea not knowing much about the history of Shea Stadium. Luckily, directors Paul Crowder and Jon Small did a great job laying out Shea Field's place in history and its importance to so many people from the average Mets fans to Sir Paul McCartney, and along the way, I got a look into how Shea Stadium affected the careers of Billy Joel, Sting, and the Beatles.
The Last Play at Shea starts way back when Shea Stadium was first built. Narration by Alec Baldwin explains why Shea Stadium and other developments were meant to bring the upper class of Manhattan out to the suburbs of Queens and why they failed to do so. Instead, working class families moved out to Queens.

New York -- The ninth annual Tribeca Film Festival, which concluded Sunday, attracted some 410,000 visitors, the second-highest attendance figure in its eight-year history.
The number includes an estimated 300,000 attendees at the free Tribeca Family Festival Street Fair and Tribeca/Espn Sports Day held May 1. Around 94,000 people attended the 496 in-theater screenings and events, dropping from a high of 203,000 in 2006 as screenings have slowly been pared back from more than 800 that year.
But one Tribeca figure that hasn't yet been revealed could have the biggest implications for audiences, sales and distribution at other festivals: the number of $45 Premium passes sold for the inaugural Tribeca Film Festival Virtual. The weeklong online program, overseen by fest executive director Nancy Schafer and recently appointed Tribeca Enterprises chief creative officer Geoff Gilmore, streamed eight world and North American premiere features from the fest's lineup, plus shorts, panels and other video content.

Last year, we were pretty sure that Christie Brinkley was cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs after the sordid details about her divorce from Peter Cook went public. (You remember, that’s the case where he slept with an 18-year-old and they both demanded that the other get sent to prison - classy!) It’s nice to see that one of Christie Brinkley’s divorces hasn’t ended in complete sleaze though, just look at how happy she and her beret are to be hanging out with ex-husband Billy Joel and their daughter Alexa Ray.
They were all together for the premiere of Last Play At Shea at the Tribeca Film Festival chronicling the Piano Man’s final concert at Shea Stadium before it was torn down. Also in attendance? Joel’s other ex, Katie Lee, whom he divorced last summer. Now that just seems awkward. Or is is sweet? We’re...
