Violence & Gore

  • Scenes of violence are motivated by racism, with enslaved people whipped, beaten and shot by white men. In one scene, a black man has the mark of his slave owner burned onto his cheek.
  • There is focus on blood and injuries sustained in battle, such as a soldier with an intestinal wound, or soldiers with missing limbs being treated in a field hospital.
  • A hanged man from a tree is clearly seen.
  • It is implied a man's head is cut of you do not see the act but you do see his decapitated head in the hands of the murderer.
  • Graphic images of dead bodies with varying gory wounds between them.
  • Strong battle violence depicting soldiers shot in the head, stabbed and blown up by cannon fire.

Profanity

  • Lots of use of the "n" word, as one might expect. In addition, there are several uses of the "f" word.

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • Some characters are seen smoking

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • The whole film is intense and can be upsetting to some. Also some of the violence may be disturbing.
  • There are upsetting and emotional scenes, such as families being separated from each other by slave owners.
  • A man who has escaped enslavement is relentlessly pursued through swampy land by men on horseback and their dogs.
