One of the best Fantasy drama from China
sxia-9863816 February 2021
First I am not fan from book, manhua, or donghua. So I am pure drama fan. This drama is really good, from acting, direction, and special effects. It will become my bottomline for chinese fantasy drama next. The story is little confusing and dragging the first 5 episodes if you never watch/read other adaptation, but the more story grow and the characters evolved the more interesting it become. If you like avengers you can considered it china avengers. But seriously try to watch and persistent until you reach 7 episode you will be hooked by story, characters, direction and most importantly special effects.

This drama is soul food
soglambert16 February 2021
If you are looking for a drama to heal your soul, this is the one. The drama puts great emphasis on character building and relationship development. You will find all types of relationships such as father-son, master-student, peer-peer, lover-lover, good-evil in this drama. The relationships are not perfect, but the ruptures create stronger chemistry and deeper bounds within the characters. I feel deeply touched by the respect, trust and care within them. Especially the team members, they are so securely attached to each other. In nowadays world, many of us feel so lonely. we all look for a deep bound with someone who truly understands and supports us. Watch this show and learn the qualities of those amazing characters!

I love it, better than expected :)
korisnik9829 February 2021
I am currently watching Douluo Continent and I am loving it! I didn't read the novel, nor watched the anime on purpose, because I didn't want to build up expectations, and as a fresh viewer I am liking the drama so so much - it's cheerful, funny and positive, and exactly my favorite kind of fantasy. The cast is great, Xiao Zhan is both super gorgeous and very convincing as smart, capable, kind and brave Tang San. :) I really love his character, the way he's keeping low-key, while being true bad-ass, the way he is nice and good, but not a pushover, but brave, strong-minded and principled. I like the main female character too, she's cute and bubbly, but very good at taking care of herself, a total oposite of usual damsel in distress, and I love it :) I like the story so far, it is intriguing, pulls you in and you can't wait for more, so I am really excited about it. As for the cgi - it depends, some are awesome (like purple demon eyes and soul powers), some not so much (like the spider monster), but too me it is more than passable and honestly, as a fan of fantasy dramas, I am used to it. It also occured to me that monsters could have been done like that on purpose, not to look too real, since it is aired on national TV at noon, when kids are watching, so I guess if monsters looked too real that could have been a problem with younger audiences... I love that Xiao Zhan did his own dubbing, but the sound overall (not just for him) isn't the best, I think that sound management could have been a little better, but it is not too distracting. Overall, it's interesting, funny and beautiful, and I enjoy it so much, I hope novel and anime fans will give it a chance and have understanding for the necessary changes. Afterall, the novel writer himself participated in development of the drama and was satisfied with the results, that should be telling enough. And, after the drama is over, I will definitely read the novel and watch the anime too :)

Review from a fan of the novel
ChongqingPride9 February 2021
I'm a fan of the novel and I find this adaptation a perfect complement to it. The drama both follows the original story and introduces some changes when it has to which in my opinion works very well. I really like the vision of Douluo Continent and its specific style. It's not the usual, bombastic and colorful wuxia drama, it's more a down-to-earth story about people with special powers yet with the regular human feelings and motivations. This adaptation has very good casting. Xiao Zhan as Tang Sang, Kenny Bee as his father and Calvin Chen as the Master are the perfect matches for these roles. Special effects are the icing on the cake. It all creates a very gripping drama with beautiful landscapes, amazing special effects, interesting story and fantastic actors. No wonder the author of Douluo Continent novel was himself very satisfied with this adaptation.

Recommended drama
yensebrina9 February 2021
I've personally watch animations and this drama. Both are good. Initially I'm worried that this will spoil the animations but it turn out very good. Some people rated 1star must be hater which cannot be trustes. Go and have a look/watch it youself. The special effects is good and above my expectations. The acting skill is good too. We have to be realistic as real life is not like animations. No matter how good the special effects can do there is still limitation compare to animation where what you draw and imagine can be done. We have to be realistic. Overall the storyline modification vs animation is acceptable as we cannot be doing all hundred over episode animation drama in 40 episode. So the slight change on story is acceptable and understandable.

I watched till latest ep 11 with English subtitles!
kanikagarg-740449 February 2021
I already read novel and watched it's animation till ep 130. Drama has little different plot than actual novel but it's more interesting...and still holding original novel plot's facts and substance. Characters are also good and amazingly portrait so far especially TangSan, his father, Master Gang, Headmaster. Oscar character is more interesting than novel. Plot pace is picked up in latest episodes. Fighting scenes and unfolding of story is amazingly done. Overall CGI is top notch. Uptill episode 11, all Cast acting is also good. Exact Copy and paste of novel in Drama make drama draggy and boring..but this is not the case here. Because of some changes in drama plot, story is really intriguing and attractive. Plot and character's building in drama is really perfect. One can feel more attachment with TangSan and his father relationship than novel and animation. Drama actually covered that missing emotional feeling between father-son duo. Xiao Zhan, calvin Chen, Qiu Xin Zhi, Kenny Chung, Gai Tai Yu, Liu Mei Tong are doing amazing acting. I even like artist playing Xiao Wu character. Looking forward to new characters too..San Pao is cute pig-dog. I recommend to watch it.. because as things are unveiling one after another in the plot, it excites you about what will happen next. As I already know the actual plot of the novel..I was not expecting much attraction towards drama....but Drama plot is more exciting and intriguing and it wants me to watch more. Overall drama worth watching!! Watched till Episode 29- Story is really going very good. Many things are unfolding and many things are becoming more secretive. I like how headmaster and master built a team spirit within 7 students. 7 different people with diff thinking, diff agendas in life are difficult to become a team..but both teacher push them to find their own weaknesses and become one team. New characters are introducing one after another..and they all are making their own place in drama n able attract attention towards themselves. Emotional scene are very well done..as expected from Xiao Zhan..he nails such scenes. Story becoming more interesting n secretive. Enjoying it alot. Its giving fresh experience then novel and anime but still keeping novel actual plot as base! This is drama's USP!

Watched 11 episodes soo far and it is amazing!
alinacrystalrose9 February 2021
So I was a donghua fan of DC so when this drama was announced I was expected. First 3-4 episodes will feel like a bit slow for ppl already familiar with the story but this is necessary to introduce the story to ppl who still dont know the background. It starts picking up from ep 6 and let me tell you,I am floored by the special effects. It is worth to watch in HD,a visual treat. Im familiar with Xiao Zhan through the Untamed and soo far he's done an amazing job with tang san as well. For ppl who are into the mystery fantasy genre,10/10 would recommend . Go for it.

An encouraging story
smileyfan-9193216 February 2021
This TV series is based on a book, but it's a modified version with added elements about the growing pain, success and exciting fighting to gain more skills/powers of a group of youth especially "Tang San" . There are splendid scenes with special effects. On top of that, Xiao Zhan, who is acting as Tang San, did an excellent job in portraiting Tang San since he's still a teenager. From the a bit of unconfident boy till he went through so much with friends, teachers, loved one together, finally became the most power one, Xiao Zhan showed step by step how Tang San grew up. Besides the fighting, the pain, the affection, the investigation game, this TV series is quite funny from time to time. Overall speaking this is an excellent TV series worth watching. Hope you will enjoy it too.

Very good CG
duanduanchristine17 February 2021
I've never watch the original novel or the anime series. I think the story line is really interesting! And most importantly, the CGI is really great, although the camera is sometimes too shaky 😂 the only bad part is the main actor's acting skills, and the background music. Sometimes Tang San is trying too hard to act, which make him look unnatural. Xiao Wu also has the same problem, but I think because they are both young actors. The music does not suit the scene well, I just feel some parts are really weird. Overall, it's a Chinese drama with an interesting story line!

Bit off more then he could chew
ENIGMA0524 February 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This is my honest review.

I'm going to start by saying this series gets a 7/10 from me and it's 100% on the screenwriter. Maybe it's because I'm used to American blockbusters, maybe it's because I have friends that are screenwriters in Hollywood whose work I've read and given critique on, maybe it's because I'm a professional writer/editor myself and have written scripts and novels over the years, or maybe it's all of the above. Fact remains, this screenwriter bit off more then he could chew and it fell short and I'm just a drama/lead actor fan; never read the novel nor am I into donghua. Though it's not even close to a comparison, Lord of the Rings: first film alone had 3 screenwriters. Maybe it was the arrogance of the screenwriter but he or the director or the production company should have brought more people to help him. There was simply no way for him to be able to take this project and do it justice himself. It is impossible given its size. I know there are people scoring full 10s and more power to them but with all of my experience in this and as mentioned above, this is an honest review that will get constructive criticism.

Under no circumstances can or should DC be compared to his other works simply because it's completely different. With the amount of CGI and other visual effects, it lands in a category of its own. Let me make myself clear, DC is not a bad series, especially for those of us that don't know its history; it's just not a powerful transition from 2D to 3D live action. One thing that is a faux pas for writers and screenwriters; it should not take 13 plus episodes/chapters to introduce main or supporting characters. If there is a concrete lead, that lead should always be around enough to remind the audience of who the individual is.

We were working with 40 episodes, 35 minutes long each (not counting credits) for part 1. I get it, you want to introduce everyone and set up their backstories. Very feasible but you're neglecting the reason the story exists; lead character must grow and evolve too. Between episodes 6-13 there was almost no plot cohesion. It was a roller coaster ride of let's randomly bring more people into the mix while running around doing tasks that don't have a meaning.

Furthermore, those episodes and some additional ones should have been called "The boring nonsense of OuSiKe and Rong Rong." Out of the 7 devils the screenwriter/director/producer made him look like Betty Crocker and his constant artsy fartsy monologues of Mr. Motor Mouth were enough to give most a splitting headache. Personally if he had signed with Prince ugly Eyebrows, left ShiLanKe and opened a theatre academy, I would have been thrilled. Again, I'm not blaming the actor for this as he was acting out the script. His character was the most lackluster and worthless out of the entire bunch. When he and Rong Rong would whine, it sounded like '90s dial up internet gone haywire. I fast forwarded a lot of their scenes as they had no value to the story.

It felt sad that so much good material was wasted. The battles lasted maximum 5 minutes while the conversations and needless explanations took the rest of the time. Growth of characters requires them doing things; just like the saying goes "actions speak louder then words", just dialogue will not evolve a character. Even without the background of the novel, I could tell the evolution of some characters and total standstills of others.

So many anticlimactic scenes and music. The OST's were gorgeous but towards the end were chucked randomly into parts of the episodes that didn't require them. The entire time the 7devils were in MSH towards the end didn't even seem like part of this series. Most were out playing Sherlock Holmes on separate mysteries trying to solve puzzles and save the ultimate villain who already knew everything that was going on. It seemed that the screenwriter ran out of material (shocking) and had to stretch to make it 40 episodes with a lot of nonsense. For 5 episodes, I felt like I was in the game of "Clue". It was a shoddy patchwork job that deserved way better; the actors taking on these roles and the audience deserved better.

I've mentioned some actors above and I'll continue speaking about them in their character sense again (I'll speak about the actual actors later if necessary). Mu Bai who started out as bossy and a total turn off, evolved into a mature and well prepared captain. Same goes for Zhu Zhu Qing, though from the 7 devils other then Tang San, she was my 2nd favorite because of her fierceness and I liked her character's growth. Master and Headmaster along with Ma Hong Jun were also heavily favored because of their comedic reprieve and growth.

I must say episode 40 left me scratching my head but not at the cliffhanger which was expected and yet even that fell flat. There was no great battle for the championship nor a fight between Papa Tang and the Pope. The finale battle was really one dude spouting arrogant nonsense who still got his butt kicked, and the way too obvious revelation of XW being a soul beastie with a side order of Papa Tang smacking the Pope around with his hammer, twice. Tang San trying to protect XW per usual was obvious but his serious lack of surprise about her identity and his proclamation (if the subs were on point) that she was his love or lover were misplaced because it was never shown before. Even in the most dense of moments he never uttered anything save she was his younger sister. Another point off from the script, massive disconnect. I can point out many points of disconnect within the script and this show but then I'd be writing this for days.

There were many people who didn't like XW's character; personally I felt very neutral towards her. She had her good attributes (she always had TS' back, could kick some serious butt in a fight, never backed down, was willing to do whatever it took to get stronger) and she had her weaknesses (sometimes too clingy, didn't understand the simplest things, a bit too bouncy for my taste). Again most of her lackluster traits are attributed to the script because what she read, she did. Episode 39 where she and TS are in the soul beast dungeon and she basically all but said who she was and Tang San was still somewhat clueless babbling theories; really that's like scriptwriting 101 and our pal screenwriter failed. Why wait? Especially when you're not going to make it into like an abracadabra super reveal anyways? Defies logical writing and progression.

Lastly for characters and actors, I want to speak on Tang San and Xiao Zhan. It's because of Xiao Zhan (not a solo fan; multi here) that I watched this. Is his performance Oscar worthy? No. But it was the only thing with a few other characters that kept me coming back every evening for my VIP. I loved his character. Even when it was at a standstill due to the introduction of others. He put everything he knew into it and I give him praise for that. The stunts, both on wires and without were wonderful. For him, I will absolutely watch part 2 (though hopefully it won't take multiple years to get there).

I also hope--because they took such a long time to introduce the other characters--they won't throw them away in part 2. And that they follow the novel a lot closer into the second part. Nothing will ever be 100% adaptable anywhere but it should at least come to some version of close.

Lastly, I want to thank the visual effects department and CGI crew for their hard work because they truly did a fantastic job on all of their parts. My favorite part will forever be the dreamscape or interspace that TS' mother created for him. It was truly beautiful and magical. I know this international team worked hard on all of their scenes and they should not be forgotten as neither should the crew who worked in lord knows what kind of conditions and how many hours. So hats off to them. Thank you Douluo Continent for the teamwork because it does make the dream work and I'll see you all again hopefully in Part 2!

P.S. Please add at least 2 more experienced screenwriters. Much appreciated!

The worst TV series I've watched this year.
XueHuaBingYu26 February 2021
I'm a big fan of Douluo Dalu and Xiao Zhan, but live action TV series is the worst one I've watched this year. The screenplay writer altered the story a lot and the drama becomes ridiculous and has a lot of contradictions. The original story is very good, but live action is totally bad. Even animation is way better than the live action. Watching this one is a total waste of time and money. I've gave up after I watched episode 27. I felt it's becoming non-sense. Hence, I won't recommend to watch this live action TV series. If I were you, I would skip this one and watch the animation.

A must watch
psfugate9 February 2021
Once starting this show, I have not been able to stop. I was first introduced to Xiao Zhan through The Untamed and couldn't wait to watch another show with him it. He puts so much thought into his characters and whenever I watch him, I always see his character not himself and that is the sign of an amazing actor. His ability to make you always sympathize with his character and to feel all the emotions is a gift.

Very well done adaptation, interesting story, good effects, very well accomplished performances. I saw the first 4 chapters and the story really hooks and leaves me wanting to see the next one. Xiao Zhan's Tang San so far does the character justice, we will see how the plot continues to develop, I definitely recommend it

Inspiring Story Great Acting Amazing CGI
dayota16 February 2021
The story follows the adventures of Tang San and six other simple yet kind-hearted soul masters. With perseverance and strength, they overcome many difficulties to protect the ones they love and bring justice to the world. The theme of "Douluo Continent" focuses on growth and delivers a positive message to the youth in today's society. The drama not only brings forth artistic appeals through world class CGI, it also gives us a positive energy protagonist Tang San portrayed by young actor Xiao Zhan. Xiao Zhan's exceptional acting skill will bring your emotions to a new height as Tang San courageously fought his way to becoming the most powerful soul master in the continent.

mirandai-6844211 February 2021
I haven't seen neither the novel or the anime. To me, the storyline is well written and very attractive and I couldn't help looking forward to watching the next episode every day. The visual effect of this drama is amazingly incredible and I can say it's one of the best that I've seen in Chinese drama. Nevertheless, Xiao Zhan's acting is the highlight of the series, he is charming and fascinating which engages the audience's attention. Besides, all other supporting actors are doing a great job and I can feel their passion and devotion in making a real good production.

A very good drama - highly recommended
lothiril16 February 2021
I have seen now more than half of the episodes of this series, and I have enjoyed it a lot! It's good story with both emotional and funny moments and a very likable group of characters, and at the end of every episode you look forward to starting the next episode.

The show has a natural and realistic look, including sets and costumes, and for the low budget that they had they made it work. It's a good visible seperation also to the animated series and helps to establish it as it's own work with its own strengths. Nevertheless is the CGI great, the camera work is also well done, and both support the action scenes and make them fun to watch! The music is beautiful and supports the atmosphere of each scene successfully.

The story itself is well paced and the episodes develop the plot smoothly. Exposition moments to explain the world are usually well placed and kept as few as possible. The characters are very endearing and convincing, and fortuantely all get some time for development. Xiao Zhan is doing a great job in portraying Tang San as good hearted young man, who is supportive and caring, yet firece when it comes to protecting his loved ones. I like Wu Xuanyi as Xiao Wu as well, she is funny and adorable.

I'm looking forward to watching the rest of the series!

Honest review: good, but not amazing.
gili_ai17 February 2021
As someone who never read the original novel or watched the anime, I, like a lot of the reviewers here, came here for Xiao Zhan. However, I am not going to blindly give a drama a score it does not deserve because of him, whether it be artificially high or low, and I am going to try to be as honest as possible with my opinions based on what I do know.

What this show does well: -The story has very fascinating world building. I don't want to spoil it too much, but basically it's a fantasy story about leveling up your superpowers with friends. The show does a great job integrating elements of their fantasy world without coming across as harsh. -The plot is very engaging. The writers did a good job setting up and revealing one mystery after the next, and every episode left me excited for the next. These small mysteries also serve to reveal a larger plot that I don't know yet, but am excited to learn about. -The side (Note I said side) characters are hilarious with distinct personalities. You get attached to them quickly, and as zany as they are they all have weaknesses and feel oddly relatable.

What this show didn't do well: -The main character is a little... Insufferable at times. I don't know what the writers were thinking since they clearly (through the side characters) knew what makes a character likeable to the audience, so why does the main character have no personality besides being a big-talking goody two-shoes? It's not that I can't have righteous characters, but the main character needs to do more than proselytize to other people about what is right and wrong. -I know this is his comeback drama and I swear I am not an anti, but Xiao Zhan...left things to be desired. Maybe it's because of his voice acting, but I feel like his acting isn't as... Fluid as the others? Like sometimes his expressions are not on point? 70%of the time it's good, but occasionally he's not. And to be honest, I don't think he suited the role very well. Like dude, tang San is the son of a remote black Smith of a village who continues to do blacksmith work on the side, Xiao Zhan looks like a price or something. And his clothes are always so neat, like???

Anyway those are my comments. Might update this later.

MY REVIEW AS A FAN OF CARTOON "DOULUO DALU"
st-0736617 February 2021
Honestly, I did not accept this drama at the beginning because it changed a lot comparing with cartoon "DouLuo DaLu". But I love it when I watched it to episode 12. It's wonderful drama, changing is necessary. It makes me laugh and understand more detail easily. Tansan is so handsome and Xiaowu is so cute, I want to watch more.

Overall, for me it was a boring series, meant to create expectations that were not met.
dimghro19 March 2021
First of all, I want to mention that for me it was the first interaction with the Douluo universe. I happened to see the trailer on YouTube and I was attracted by the effects and actors. As soon as it was launched, I switched to the premium subscription to see it as soon as possible. After the first 20 episodes I was already bored. The series is built in such a way that after each episode you have even higher expectations related to what happened to the story, but in the end I was left with the expectation. I watched it until the end more for the actors.

It's so-so
shakwaann21 June 2021
The story is good and interesting. The characters seemed eye-catching. Everything was okay. But honestly the female leads acting here was a bit weird. At times her character in drama seemed to be a bit annoying. Due to her acting the chemistry between the male and female lead couldn't be shown well. The filming wasn't done that well. The camera seemed to be shaky at times during some episodes. It could've been better but well it's okay.
