Mark Strong on the Tone of Kick-Ass, Sherlock Holmes and Robin Hood

24 December 2009 1:12 AM, PST | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

Actor Mark Strong has been making the rounds recently in support of his latest movie, Sherlock Holmes, but he also has starring roles in three other upcoming genre pictures: Robin Hood, Kick-Ass, and John Carter of Mars. In a new interview with CinemaBlend, Strong spoke about how important it is for an actor to understand the tone movie's director is looking for.

Strong reunited with the RocknRolla director, Guy Ritchie, for Sherlock Holmes, in which he plays the villain Lord Blackwood. Strong said that his portrayal of the character depended very much on the tone Ritchie wanted and how the titular star of the movie, Robert Downey Jr., approached the role of Holmes.

We had to know exactly what that tone was, and I think Guy certainly had an inkling of it, and Robert certainly had an inkling, and brought what he does to the film. He's very mischievous, Robert, »

Exclusive Interview: Sherlock Holmes Villain Mark Strong

23 December 2009 12:09 PM, PST | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

If you've noticed Mark Strong in the movies lately, it's probably because you've been scared of him. From Stardust to Body of Lies to this Christmas's Sherlock Holmes, the experienced British theater actor is making a name for himself as a reliable villain, despite the fact that when I interviewed him over the phone last week, he was probably one of the nicest people I've ever spoken to. In Holmes, on the other hand, he's the ruthless Lord Blackwood, a power-hungry and secretive guy who's convincing the most powerful people in London that he has magical powers-- everyone, of course, except the ever-skeptical Sherlock Holmes. Strong will be seen in some of the most anticipated movies of the next year, as a villain in both Ridley Scott's Robin Hood and Matthew Vaughn's Kick-Ass. I've excerpted our conversation about those films, including fighting a 10-year-old girl and massacring monks, »

The Notable Films of 2010: Part Five

Hippie Hippie Shake

Opens: 2010

Cast: Cillian Murphy, Sienna Miller, Max Minghella, Emma Booth, Lee Ingleby

Director: Beeban Kidron

Summary: Follows the love story of Oz editor Richard Neville and Louise Ferrier. Neville and his cohorts launch the London edition of Oz amidst the 1960s counterculture and are subsequently put on trial for distributing a sexually explicit issue.

Analysis: One of the most troubled productions in Working Title's history, 'Hippie' began development back in 1998 but failed to get beyond script stage both in 1999 and in 2002 when "Elizabeth" helmer Shekhar Kapur was attached to direct. Filming finally got underway late 2007 with director Beeban Kidron in charge and shooting seemed to proceed without issue aside from feminist author Germaine Greer being vehemently unhappy about being depicted on film.

Actually the film scored quite a bit of free press for a skinny dipping scene where full-frontal shots of actress Sienna Miller shooting the sequence »

Mark Strong on Sherlock Holmes, Peter Weir’s The Way Back, The Guard and Eagle Of The Ninth

22 December 2009 10:11 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

About a week ago, I got to speak to an actor whose work I really admire: Mark Strong (IMDb resume).  While many of you might not know his name, if you ever saw Body of Lies, he played a character named Hani Salaam and he was the best performance in the film.  Since then, Strong has booked a ton of very high profile gigs in some of Hollywood’s biggest movies.  Clearly people noticed his work and as a fan, I’m excited to see him in more movies.

Anyway, the reason I got to speak with him is he plays the villainous Lord Blackwood in director Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes.  During out conversation we discussed the promotional process for Sherlock Holmes and what he’s had to do, working for Guy Ritchie again, what he did to prepare for the role, and so much more.

New 'Kick-Ass' Trailer, Soundboard And Widget

22 December 2009 2:29 PM, PST | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

The last few weeks have included quite a few holiday gifts for anyone eager to check out "Kick-Ass," Matthew Vaughn's upcoming adaptation of John Romita Jr. and Mark Millar's comic book series. And now, to go along with the awesome posters and trailers that have hit the 'Net this month, there's also a new, red-band (and depending on where you work, likely Nsfw) "Kick-Ass" clip.

The new footage debuted as part of an exclusive "Kick-Ass" widget on IGN, and puts the spotlight on Hit-Girl, the pint-size assassin played by Chloe Moretz. As fans of the series are already aware, the character drops f-bombs and other obscenities as easily as she eviscerates, decapitates and ventilates any bad guys who get in her way.

The footage is fairly brutal, but — and I might be alone in thinking this — it's brutal in the best possible way. In fact, the trailer's likely »

Sneak Peek the new red band trailer featuring 'Hit-Girl' from director Matthew "Layer Cake" Vaughn's upcoming feature "Kick-Ass".

Lionsgate will release the film in North America April 16, 2010 with Focus Features Intl. distributing throughout the UK, Australia, Germany, Latin America, Austria, Switzerland and New Zealand.

The film stars Nicolas Cage, Aaron Johnson, Chloe Moretz, Christopher Mintz-Plasse and Mark Strong.

Vaughn’s Marv Films independently financed the action feature, co-produced by Brad Pitt, Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner for Plan B.

Premise of "Kick-Ass" follows 'Dave Lizewski', a New York City high school student and only child of single father 'Greg Willer'. Dave takes an interest in comic books as his inspiration to become a vigilante hero, assembling a suit and mask, worn under his normal clothing.

His first attempt at fighting crime results in a beating and stabbing, followed by wandering through the streets and being hit by a car. But »

‘Kick-Ass’ Red Band Trailer Focuses on Hit Girl

22 December 2009 8:00 AM, PST | The Flickcast | See recent The Flickcast news »

The marketing for April’s Kick-Ass has been in full force as of late. Since the release of the trailer over a month ago, the posters have been rolling out on a regular basis, with a new twist to the marketing plan. That new angle is giving focus to each of the other crime fighters in the film, who may or may not actually be all that good.

This is an interesting take on the film, seeing as how the titular character, Kick-Ass, is the main protagonist in the original comic series by Mark Millar. Either way, in the newest red band trailer, we get a few new scenes with Chloe Moretz as Hit-Girl, Nic Cage as Big Daddy, and of course Aaron Johnson.

Check out the new Nsfw trailer after the jump, which only makes this movie look even better, and expect to see more new footage from Matthew Vaughn »

New Red Band Kick-Ass Clip Features Hit Girl

22 December 2009 1:44 AM, PST | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

If the idea of a 10-year-old girl with no superpowers fighting crime sounds ridiculous to you, reserve judgment until you see Hit Girl in action in this new Rated-r clip for Kick-Ass, director Matthew Vaughn's big screen adaptation of the comic book by Mark Millar. Not only does Hit Girl (played by Chloe Moretz) have mad hand-to-hand combat skills and a talent for gunplay, her dirty mouth is also powerful enough to make a sailor blush. Hit Girl may just dethrone Gogo Yubari (Chiaki Kuriyama), the chain-wielding school girl/assassin from Kill Bill, as the baddest girl at the Cineplex.

Kick-Ass also stars Aaron Johnson as Dave "Kick-Ass" Lizewski, Nicolas Cage as Damon "Big Daddy" Macready, and Christopher Mintz-Plasse as Chris "Red Mist" D'Amico.

Hit Girl Exposed in 'Kick-Ass' Red Band Trailer

21 December 2009 11:53 PM, PST | Aceshowbiz | See recent Aceshowbiz news »

Lionsgate Films has provided another preview to "Kick-Ass" by releasing an age restricted trailer. Unlike the previously released sneak peeks which mainly focus on green-costumed superhero Kick-Ass, the new video which was outed by IGN gives much of its portion to Hit Girl, an alter ego of 12 year-old Mindy Macready who shows no mercy when attacking her enemies.

Adapted from a comic book series by Mark Millar and John Romita Jr., "Kick-Ass" promises to offer a twisted, funny, high-octane adventure from director Matthew Vaughn. Set for U.S. release on April 16, 2010, it follows the story of average teenager Dave Lizewski who decides to take his comic-book obsession as inspiration to become a real-life superhero.

Assembling green-colored suit and mask to wear, he opts to be called Kick-Ass and gets to work fighting crime. As a superhero wannabe, Kick-Ass actually has no superpower. However, his life is forever changed as he »
