- The Gravedigger returns and captures Booth. He wants the evidence that someone has stolen from the case, and he believes that Bones has it. Can the Squints find their friend before Booth becomes the Gravediggers latest casualty?
- Hodgins, Bones and author Thomas Vega are officially suspected of stealing FBI evidence concerning the Grave Digger, who once buried both team members alive. The team aborts Bones' award gala after the fiend sends a coded message: he has captured Booth and will asphyxiate him in a coffin within 24 hours unless the evidence is paid as ransom. Now Hodgins admits he has it, but convinces the others to try first 8 hours to identify the monster. Vega is found murdered in his car. Meanwhile Booth suffers a hallucination - he is with the ghost of corporal Edward 'Teddy' Parker, whom his best efforts couldn't save in combat. Teddy seems to help his efforts to escape from his 'coffin', an entire Navy ship loaded with explosives. The evidence is handed over, with disappointing result. Booths' brother Jared risks everything to enable more illegal moves even after once special agent Payton Perotta has them all taken from the case.—KGF Vissers
- We open with Brennan (Emily Deschanel) and Hodgins (T.J. Thyne) sitting in an FBI conference room and hearing the latest news about the Grave Digger. Turns out evidence in the ongoing case has gone missing -- and our heroes are suspects. A judge (Richard V. Licata) urges everyone in the room to turn over any evidence they might have to Agent Taffet (Deirdre Lovejoy) for full immunity. Taffet, meanwhile, glares at Brennan and Hodgins. Does she know something we don't?
CUT to Booth (David Boreanaz), modeling a rented tuxedo in the mirror. He gets a call from Brennan, who seems anxious he arrive on time to a gala event in her honor. "I'll be there when they crown you super scientist," he quips. Later, Brennan arrives at the lab in her finest evening gown. Her phone rings -- it's the Grave Digger! A doctored voice demands she bring evidence to a local cemetary and not to involve the authorities. Oh, and there's one more thing: the Grave Digger has Booth. The team is shocked and horrified. They rush to Booth's apartment to find the agent gone. Angela (Michaela Conlin) wants to call the authorities, but Sweets (John Francis Daley) says no. "If we want Booth back, we need to pay the ransom," the doc explains. Angela then calls Hodgins. Did he steal the evidence?
Booth, meanwhile, is locked inside some sort of metal box. He struggles to unscrew the bolts and eventually springs the top! Turns out he is locked inside a small, yellow submarine. But it gets even odder. A man in camouflage emerges from the shadow. "Teddy?" Booth asks. We see a FLASHBACK of a uniformed Booth carrying Teddy (Noel Fisher) on his shoulders through a war zone. "You're a hallucination," Booth says. "You're dead. I felt your heart stop." Is the man real or a dream? Booth doesn't waste time trying to figure it out. He attempts to pry open a nearby metal door.
Hodgins, in the meantime, presents the lost evidence to Brennan. He had taken the goods to try to "narrow down the suspect pool." Angela is upset. "You stole evidence?" she asks. Hodgins knows Booth only has 19 hours, but he pleads for 10 to examine the evidence. "I know the answer is there," he says. Brennan agrees to eight hours. Can they solve the case AND rescue their friend? Only time will tell. So let's get on with it. Angela analyzes the Grave Digger's phone call and discovers some background noises. "Seagulls," Brennan notes. "The Grave Digger was near water." Says Camille (Tamara Taylor): "Kings Beach Boardwalk!" Hodgins then notes Vega (Marco Sanchez), an author also suspected of stealing evidence, lives right off the Boardwalk. Hmm. Brennan and Hodgins investigate and find Vega dead in his car. "Looks like he was killed somewhere else and then his body was taken here," Brennan notes. Cross another one off the suspect list. Suddenly, Agent Perotta (Marisa Coughlan) pulls up. The investigation isn't so secret anymore. The Grave Digger ain't gonna like this.
In the meantime, Booth manages to pry open the door with the encouragement of his imaginary (?) friend. Alas, water begins rushing in through the gap! The room begins to fill up! Booth climbs the wall to a ledge frantically searching for another, drier exit.
Back at the parking garage, Perotta has no choice but to let Bones and Hodgins go -- although she tells them that they are "under surveillance." "We still have time to catch the Grave Digger and save Booth!" Hodgins tells the team (this guy is like a broken record). Camille warns not turning the evidence over immediately constitutes "felony conspiracy." Brennan doesn't seem to mind.
Booth and Teddy pry open a large hatch and climb into another room. Booth also has a revelation. "You're a ghost!" he tells Teddy. "You were 20 years old when you died." We find out Booth has named his son after Teddy, whose last name is Parker. They discuss Booth's life -- the end of his marriage, etc. -- when Booth finds a window. "We're on a ship," he says. Unfortunately, Teddy notices he ship is also rigged to explode!
The team drives to the cemetery mentioned by the Grave Digger. They notice a camera in a tree, so the kidnapper knows the evidence has been dropped off on a specific grave. Brennan and Hodgins take the evidence to the grave. The latter turns to the camera and roars, "I will find you!" Angela, meanwhile, does some fancy computer work and figures out that the Grave Digger's signal isn't coming from the camera. It's coming from the grave! "Run!" she screams. Brennan and Hodgins obey and the grave EXPLODES behind them. A close call. Perotta then pulls up, late as usual.
The team is brought back into the judge's chambers, where the members refuse to tell him or Agent Taffet anything. Brennan asks to examine Vega's body, which doesn't go over well. "You will examine nothing," the judge barks. "You people will stay away from anything having to do with the Grave Digger!" We CUT to Hodgins, who clearly doesn't intend to obey this order.
Back on the ship, Booth and Teddy have figured out the boat is going to be sunk for reef-building purposes. The toys, like the yellow submarine, are there only to attract the fish. Booth examines the bomb and discovers a timer: 6 hours and 23 minutes before BOOM time. "Maybe we can use the transponder to send a signal," he theorizes. Teddy warns once the transponder is pulled, the explosion can't be disarmed. Booth pulls it anyway.
The team, meanwhile, is in a panic. How much of a panic? Brennan goes to Booth's younger brother Jared (Brendan Fehr), a cocky drunk with a bad reputation. Not exactly Mr. Reliable, in other words. "Booth will be dead in six hours," Brennan explains. "What I need you to do is hijack the remains of the murder victim and then bring them to me." Lil Booth doesn't like the plan, prompting Brennan to call him a "selfish coward."
Back on the boat, Booth tells Teddy he should have never been sent on that last mission. Is the fallen soldier haunting our hero, or just lending a helping hand? Booth tables the question and turns back to the transponder. He attempts to send a signal -- only to be shocked with a bolt of electricity! The transponder has burned out. "It's useless now," Teddy says. Thanks for the encouragement, Undead Ted.
Now for some good news: Lil Booth comes through and delivers Vega's body. "You're going to get in trouble, Jared," Camille says. "Definitely lose your job." Says Jared: "I'm aware." Hmm, maybe the kid isn't such a jerk, after all. Brennan, meanwhile, notices the victim elbowed the assailant before being killed. Thus, the Grave Digger probably has a few broken ribs right now. Just then, Agent Taffet enters with a warrant to remove the body. But wait! Taffet has trouble extending her arms! Brennan shoves the agent, who doubles over in pain. "Broken ribs," Brennan notes. That's right: Taffet is the Grave Digger!
Jared ties Taffet to a chair and demands to know where to find his brother. Naturally, the woman isn't talking. Hodgins then suggests Jared -- in the interests of national security, of course -- retrieve Taffet's secret government file. It might yield something. And indeed it does. The woman rented a storage locker nearby. We see agents storming the space -- and finding plenty of evidence. "I got you, bitch," Jarod snarls.
Back on the boat, Booth and Teddy have used the existing explosives in an attempt to create an isolated blast breaching the hull and allow them to escape. Booth needs only to touch together two wires. But how can he do it and be far enough away from the blast to survive? Teddy takes Booth's belt buckle and slides it across the floor. The metal buckle touches both wires and the hull EXPLODES! Booth immediately has a FLASHBACK to the moment Teddy died. "I didn't come to haunt you," Teddy says. "I came to tell you it wasn't your fault."
Back at the lab, the team frantically searches through the items found in Taffet's locker. A pair of boots has been recently worn -- and Hodgins notices pain chips in the treds! He runs the paint through the computer and discovers hey come from an old Navy vessel. Bingo! Brennan, meanwhile, picks up a briefcase and bashes Taffet/ the Grave Digger across the face! Meee-ow!
CUT to a helicopter speeding toward the ship with Brennan aboard, she's on the phone with Jared and he's being arrested for his part in all of this. He says it's "worth it if [Brennan] saves his big brother." Booth, meanwhile, emerges onto the deck of the ship and begins waving wildly! "One more thing I got to tell you," Teddy says. "No way you're getting the deposit back on that tux." Booth smiles and, suddenly, Teddy is gone. At that moment, the helicopter lands and Booth climbs aboard. The partners embrace as the ship EXPLODES and sinks behind them.
Totally awesome.
Later, in Arlington National Cemetery, Booth and Bones discuss Teddy. She insists there's no such thing as ghosts. He no longer blames himself for Teddy's death. He meets with Claire, Teddy's old friend and crush, at Teddy's grave, keeping his promise to Teddy to meet with her and mention how much Teddy loved her. Teddy's ghost walks by Brennan and greets her.
