It's mentioned that Chicago, Rio de Janeiro, Madrid and Tokyo were all bidding to host the 2016 Summer Olympics. On October 2, 2009, it was announced that Rio had been chosen.
The episode was very controversial in Brazil. Rio de Janeiro Mayor Eduardo Paes called it "ridiculous and pathetic." Sérgio de Oliveira Cabral Santos Filho, the governor of Rio de Janeiro State, jokingly said, "now even [Law & Order's] writers are getting desperate.
The episode title is from the poem "To Helen" (1831, revised 1845) by Edgar Allen Poe: "Thy Naiad airs have brought me home / To the glory that was Greece, / And the grandeur that was Rome."
