Say this about the pandemic: There are now enough songs about Covid-19 to make for a pretty eclectic playlist. The track lineup would include T Turbo, Gunna and Young Thug’s chilled-out “Quarantine Clean,” Luke Combs’ forlorn “Six Feet Apart,” and Twenty One Pilots’ kitschy, almost romantic “Level of Concern.” If nothing else, the virus has found common ground between genres that otherwise would have barely much in common.

Unlike Record of the Year at the Grammys, Song of the Year is strictly for songwriters, and the rule of thumb usually is, if it’s not a lyrically unique song, an empowerment anthem, a love/breakup song, or a political song, it’s probably not getting a nomination. So with that said, expect Record contenders like “The Box” by Roddy Ricch, “Savage” by Megan Thee Stallion and Beyonce, “Dynamite” by BTS, “Say So” by Doja Cat and “Lost In Yesterday” by Tame Impala to miss here. But if not them, who can we expect to find in the race?
The Record of the Year winner often repeats in Song of the Year, so “Blinding Lights” by The Weeknd is probably the front-runner for the writing award too. However, could the nomination review committee think the song is too lightweight for Song of the Year? It’s definitely a possibility.

Luke Combs was named the Top Country Artist at the 2020 Billboard Awards, held on Wednesday and broadcast on NBC. During the event, Combs also gave a live performance of his new single “Better Together.”
Accompanied only by a masked piano player, a suited-up Combs gives a faithful rendition of the tune, which he penned with Dan Isbell and Randy Montana for his 2019 album What You See Is What You Get. The song closes out the original version of the album (though not the upcoming deluxe edition with bonus tracks) and draws comparisons between ideal pairings,...
