The Last Airbender
Opens: July 2nd 2010
Cast: Noah Ringer, Nicola Peltz, Jackson Rathbone, Dev Patel
Director: M. Night Shyamalan
Summary: A live-action film based on the Nickelodeon animated TV series. In a fantastic world where civilisation exists as four great empires, a reluctant young child sets out on a perilous journey to restore balance to a world torn apart by war.
Analysis: Its been quite the decade for M. Night Shyamalan who started it as a household name with labels of a moodern-day Hitchcock thanks to the likes of "The Sixth Sense" and "Signs". Today he's considered more of a one-trick pony and in some cases a punchline due to rampant stories of egomania run wild and a series of much derided onscreen flops like "Lady in the Water" and "The Happening".
Thus 'Airbender' marks a potential return to form for the helmer. An adaptation of his hit cartoon series

Ever since it was revealed last week that Mel Gibson will be shooting a new film next year, rumors have been spreading across the Internet as to what the film will actually be about, with many people suggesting that it may possibly be the story of Jesus Arriaga due to a location being revealed as Ignacio Allende prison in Mexico.
Variety have now revealed that Gibson’s film will in fact be an epic Viking period drama starring Leonardo DiCaprio. The film will be written by Oscar winner William Monahan, who adapted The Departed (starring DiCaprio) and Edge of Darkness (starring Gibson). Gibson will produce alongside Tim Headington (the natural resources billionaire who has recently started producing movies) and Graham King, who has produced numerous films starring DiCaprio over the past decade, as well as Mel Gibson’s upcoming Edge of Darkness.
Obviously the location in Mexico is for an entirely different project,

Mel Gibson To Star In Summer Vacation

Lordy, Mel Gibson is getting busy.Just hours after the news was announced that he will direct a Viking epic to star Leonardo DiCaprio, Variety has revealed that won’t actually be next on Gibbo’s agenda. Instead, he’ll star in How I Spent My Summer Vacation, a self-penned action drama set in Mexico. This explains why Gibson was glimpsed in Mexico last week; clearly, he was scouting locations, something he’s been doing for the best part of a year. What with this, starring in Jodie Foster’s The Beaver, preparing for the release of Edge Of Darkness and prepping that untitled Viking flick, Gibson must have left very little time for his Christmas shopping. How I Spent My Summer Vacation will tell the story of a career criminal (Gibson) who gets sent to a squalid, crime-ridden Mexican prison, where he bonds with a nine year-old boy. Mel Gibson and Leonardo DiCaprio: together at last? Yes, it would seem so, as DiCaprio has agreed to star in an untitled period drama focused on Viking culture for the man who made Braveheart and Apocalypto.Variety reports that Departed producer Graham King (who also just worked with Gibson on Edge Of Darkness) got the pair together to talk future projects, and they quickly agreed on the planned epic. And there's another Departed connection - the film's writer, William Monahan, will be responsible for the script. So far, nothing is known of the plot besides the fact that Viking enthusiast DiCaprio will get to play one in and the film will likely be bloody (given the likes of Passion Of The Christ, we're not shocked)."This will be an awe-inspiring story, created with some of the industry’s finest cinematic talent, and I am just over the moon to

Would you like to see Mel Gibson in a movie that's like Taken, except for this time there's no possibility of saving the Daughter? Hell yes you would!
Don't get too excited though, this poster is pretty much the first one turned on it's side. Um, the other differences might include: a lighter, smokier Gibson, words are shoved to the left, and less leg. Not a lot of creativity for the UK poster for Edge Of Darkness.
I wonder if they'll Photoshop out the gun and add a beaver for his other

Theron, Hardy Rev Engines for ‘Mad Max’?

A few months ago, I wrote a list of actors I thought would make an excellent new Max Rockatansky. Neither of these names are on that list, but both probably should have.
According to a strangely worded post on E! Online, Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy may be cast in the reboot/sequel/not-a-remake that is Mad Max 4. I say it's strangely worded, because it involves confirmation from multiple sources that Theron is "director George Miller's pick to play the lead female role." Does that mean she's been picked? That he wants to pick her? That he had a dream in which he rode a white steed and saw her visage off in the clouded distance?
It's unclear.
Same wording goes for Tom Hardy who was absolutely phenomenal in Bronson. The guy is a strong acting talent, and a role like this would elevate his profile in a very cool way.

Charlize Theron & Tom Hardy In Mad Max 4?

George Miller has been trying to get a Mel Gibson-less Mad Max film off the ground for the last few years. The last thing that we heard was that the star of The Hurt Locker Jeremy Renner was up for the role in the rebooted action franchise.
However, there are now rumors that star of Brit-jail-house-flick Bronson, Tom Hardy, will be slipping into Mel Gibson’s leathers for the role of Mad Max, and that Oscar-winner Charlize Theron will be “doing a Tina Turner” and co-starring in Miller’s Mad Max: Fury Road.
The not-always-reliable E! Online is reporting that “multiple sources” are stating that Theron and Hardy will be going beyond Thunderdome and starring in Fury Road.
The site also states that the film is quite a while away yet:
“The Mad Max revamp is a long way from fruition, and Miller is being very secretive about the roles and plot.

Here’s the deal: The Road Warrior is an utterly fantastic film, and as a character, Mad Max Rockatansky is inseparable from Mel Gibson. No matter how crazy he might have become in the past few years, no matter how his image has been tarnished, the image of Mad Max lives on and will certainly be the character I remember him by.
And while it’s great that director George Miller is stepping away from Happy Feet and back toward the series that made him famous, I can’t help but cringe every time there’s talk of him replacing Gibson in Mad Max 4 (or Mad Max 4: Fury Road). Whether he intends to make a sequel or a reboot, I say slap another title on it and move forward. Please.
The latest scoop is that Oscar-winner Charlize Theron might be Miller’s choice to put on the

Does New Line Really Know ‘What Boys Want’?

In 2000, Mel Gibson starred in Paramount Pictures romantic comedy What Women Want. After a freak accident, Gibson’s character becomes able to hear every thought of any woman. The film was run with the tagline of “Finally…a man is listening,”and did decently at the theater.
Well, apparently New Line Cinema thought the idea of a character being able to hear the thoughts of the opposite sex was a pretty good plot line, as they’re taking on a comedy flick titled — ever so cleverly — What Boys Want. Aside from the obvious similarity in title, the movie revolves around a girl who can, you guessed it, hear what men are thinking.
There’s no question that Hollywood doesn’t always have the freshest ideas come out for movies, and that plots have a tendency to get recycled with one or two details being tweaked to make the new story

Government conspiracies. Shadowy figures. Scary refrigerators.
Jeez, Mel Gibson can't even trust his appliances in Edge of Darkness, a thriller about a veteran cop whose daughter is gunned down on his own doorstep. And as a grief-stricken Mel investigates the growing mystery, he finds a plot thicker than his own Boston accent.
From the director of Casino Royale, the screenwriter of The Departed and a solid cast including Gibson and the always enjoyable Ray Winstone, this has the potential to be a wicked awesome film.
Or does it?

This Week in Trailers: 'Expendables,' 'Goats,' Gibson

I had the occasion to attend the 2009 International Horror and Sci-Fi Film Festival last night in Tempe, Arizona and became engaged or entangled in a conversation about Stallone's The Expendables. To sum up: Someone was really looking forward to it and I told her to watch the trailer to see if she still held that opinion afterwards. It's not a very good selling tool.
That trailer came out this week, as did a few that acutally do look good. The latest teaser for The Men Who Stare at Goats with George Clooney and Ewan McGregor makes it look like one of the must-see flicks over the next couple months, and we're getting another Almodovar/Penelope Cruz film, too. Oh, and Mel Gibson's back in the movies after an absence of about half a decade.

Warner Brothers has released the first trailer for Edge of Darkness starring Mel Gibson as a grieving father bent on seeking out the truth surrounding his daughter's murder.
It has been roughly a decade since we have seen Mel this emotionally fired up in a domestic environment in Payback and Lethal Weapon 4, returning to the type of role he has already proven more an adept at handling. Edge of Darkness could be the film that gets Mel back on the tracks after derailing from numerous real-world incidents.
Co-starring with Mel are Ray Winstone, Danny Huston, Bojana Novakovic and Shawn Roberts. Edge of Darkness opens wide on January 29.

Law Abiding Citizen Review

Short Version: Law Abiding Citizen is a satisfying (and at times funny) revenge movie that unfortunately loses its way in the last 20 minutes.
Screen Rant reviews Law Abiding Citizen
It seems like Law Abiding Citizen is one in a series of husband/father avenges the death/mistreatment of his family movies spawned by the success of Taken (next in line is the Mel Gibson-starring Edge of Darkness).
In this one we have Gerard Butler as Clyde Shelton, loving father and husband (established quite effectively in just the first couple of minutes of the film) up against Jamie Foxx as prosecutor Nick Rice in a game of psychological cat and mouse.
Clyde’s wife and very young daughter are brutally murdered (his wife, before his eyes) by a couple of burglars who break into his home. In order to guarantee that at least one of the perpetrators gets the death sentence,

So what did you think of the trailer for Edge Of Darkness that debuted on the web yesterday? Honestly, the appearance of Mel Gibson was the only thing that was keeping me interested and that's with an entirely suspect Boston accent. The parent-getting-revenge genre is pretty hot right now (Law Abiding Citizen opens today) and this looks to be at least another solid entry. The poster popped up online to compliment the trailer and features 50% more glowering than the trailer. Check it out below:

Definitely nice to see Mel Gibson back on the screen. A bit more leathery since Signs, perhaps, but still very much a movie star. Dodgy Boston accent and all.
In the thriller Edge Of Darkness, Gibson is a Beantown homicide detective investigating his own daughter's death and uncovering high-level corruption (which, as it tends to do, probably goes all the way to the top). Ray Winstone plays a government "cleaner" sent to handle the matter in the way that shady movie government
