Amazon is pushing back on a report that suggested Freevee will shut down this spring.
On Thursday, AdWeek reported that Freevee – Amazon’s free, ad-supported streaming service – will be shutting down in the next few weeks, possibly by early April. According to the publication, with the addition of advertising to Amazon’s flagship Prime Video streaming service, Freevee has been rendered redundant.
But an Amazon spokesperson called the report inaccurate, saying in a statement to Gold Derby that “There are no changes to Freevee. Amazon Freevee remains an important streaming offering providing both Prime and non-Prime customers thousands of hit movies, shows, and Originals, all for free.” The spokesperson did not directly address the future of Freevee.
Freevee, which bore IMDb branding until 2022, is a Fast service that does not require signing up for Prime Video, Amazon’s subscription streaming service. Its content, which mostly consists of licensed shows and...

Freevee isn’t going away, Amazon says.
With Amazon’s Prime Video launch of ads by default last month, rumors and speculation have heated up that the tech giant would no longer have a strategic need for Freevee — its free, ad-supported streaming service that is separate from Prime Video. A Feb. 21 report by Adweek, citing anonymous sources, said that Amazon will “sunset” Freevee, likely in the second quarter and possibly before the NewFronts in late April.
Asked for comment, Amazon said the Adweek report is inaccurate.

After almost a year of radio silence, we have some good news to report about Leverage: Redemption.
The fan-favorite reboot has been renewed for a third season, which is set to air in 2024.
There is a significant change on the horizon for the series.
It will no longer be a Freevee original and has been shifted to Prime Video for the next season.
No reason for the change in streaming home has been given, but it's probably thanks to the devoted audience that has embraced the show since it premiered in July 2021.
Reboots are tricky to pull off, with many imploding once the initial curiosity factor wears off.
But fans have connected with this revamped series, thanks to its featuring many franchise veterans and new characters to tell a different story.

“Leverage: Redemption” has been renewed for Season 3, but will be changing platforms. The first two seasons aired on Amazon’s Freevee, but Season 3 will debut on sister streamer Prime Video in 2024 instead.
The move is significant, as “Leverage: Redemption,” a revival of the TNT series “Leverage,” was one of the major scripted titles available on Freevee. The show was ordered to series in 2020, when Freevee was still branded as IMDb TV. Freevee’s biggest scripted series at present is “Bosch: Legacy,” while a spinoff of that show was recently ordered at Prime Video as well.

Sophie (Gina Bellman), Parker (Beth Riesgraf), Eliot (Christian Kane), Harry (Noah Wyle), and Breanna (Aleyse Shannon) make excuses and walk out… leaving Hardison to call after them. He can’t take another freeze-dried meal, he insists, plus he’s missed three DC movies (a nice nod to Hodge’s role as Hawkman in Black Adam) and doesn’t even know who’s fighting whom. Electric Entertainment, the production company behind programming such as Leverage: Redemption and Almost Paradise on Amazon’s Freevee, said Thursday that it closed a 100 million loan credit facility with the Bank of America.
The company will first use the five-year financing on its slate of programming, which also includes The Ark on the Syfy Channel. Leverage: Redemption is a spinoff of Leverage, one of Freevee’s first originals, and is currently in production on its second season, while Almost Paradise first premiered on Wgna and is now preparing for a second season on Freevee.
“With the advent and continuation of the streaming industry’s growth, we have been lucky to continue to do what we do best — create original scripted programs that audiences love. With not only our broadcast, but now our streaming channel and platform partners, our content is in higher demand...

Dean Devlin’s Electric Entertainment has closed a five-year, 100-million loan credit facility with Bank of America to fund its expanding production slate that includes Leverage: Redemption, The Ark and Almost Paradise among others.
It’s Electric’s largest facility to date as demand for content continues strong, Devlin said. “With the advent and continuation of the streaming industry’s growth, we have been lucky to continue to do what we do best — create original scripted programs that audiences love. With not only our broadcast, but now our streaming channel and platform partners, our content is in higher demand as our distribution expansion has become far-reaching.”
The credit agreement “allows us to continue on our quickly moving trajectory,” said CFO Jeff Gonzalez.
The deal shores up Electric’s production, sales, and distribution arms for the domestic and international Ott industry and the traditional linear space.

A bitter court battle is brewing over Timothy Hutton’s dismissal from the reboot for Leverage after he was accused of raping a teenager in 1983.
Responding to a lawsuit filed by the actor claiming his deal was breached, series producer Electric Entertainment alleges Hutton “intentionally withheld and concealed” attempting to pay off the victim in a settlement and kill a story exposing the accusations during contract negotiations despite knowing that “the scandal would have prevented him from being offered the role.”
Hutton, who was dropped from Leverage: Redemption after the claims surfaced, has denied the allegations. He hasn’t been charged with any crime stemming from the incident.
The actor argued in a lawsuit that his agreement to star and executive produce the show included a “pay-or-play” provision that guaranteed him at least 3 million “regardless of whether Electric actually utilized his services...

If you’re someone who prefers to avoid streaming, you’re in luck: You can now watch the first season of Leverage: Redemption without the use of any streaming stick, smart TV, or the like. The Amazon Freevee series is making its broadcast premiere on Ion, taking over Monday nights at 9/8c. It all begins Monday, July 11 with the first two episodes. And now is the perfect time to watch (or re-watch) the drama — a sequel to Leverage, which aired five seasons on TNT from 2008 to 2012 — which has been renewed by the streaming service. The first season of Leverage: Redemption brought back Gina Bellman, Christian Kane, and Beth Riesgraf as series regulars and Aldis Hodge as a special guest star. They were joined by Noah Wyle and Aleyse Shannon. The series follows reformed criminals who put their unique skills to use by helping regular citizens fight back against corporate and governmental injustices.

We never can say goodbye, and that is especially true when it comes to beloved TV shows. The post-finale spinoff has always been a popular way to keep a franchise going.
In recent decades, some of these spinoffs have been just as good as the original: I would lead with “Frasier,” out of “Cheers,” of course, which put Kelsey Grammer’s character front and center, making him just as iconic as Ted Danson’s Sam Malone. And “Better Call Saul,” an idea that began as a bit of a lark when “Breaking Bad” was ending. Of course, Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould wound up creating something richer — a show led by Bob Odenkirk and Rhea Seehorn that went to dramatically dense places no one could have predicted. It’s an immediate spin-off all-timer. “The Good Fight” continued the legacy of “The Good Wife,” but shifted the focus to Christine Baranski.
