Somewhere in New Orleans’ Irish Channel, “The Channel” to its residents, Jamie wakes up from nightmares about his time in Afghanistan and gives his baby girl to her grandmother before hopping into a van like any other man heading off to work. And he is on his way to work, but the job site is a bank that he, his brother Mic, and several other ex-Marine buddies are about to rob.
It should be easy for a well-disciplined and heavily armed group of men. Get in, beat the vault code out of the manager, grab the cash and get out before anyone can react. Instead, the cops are waiting for them when they leave the building. The ensuing shootout leaves cops and robbers dead and...

The History Channel is building out its plans to move back into the miniseries space with two new scripted projects – a drama about the London plague from Vikings creator Michael Hirst and a series about the Donner Party from documentary filmmaker Ric Burns.
The A+E Networks-owned cable channel is developing The Plague Year through A+E Studios, its in-house production division, and The Donner Party (w/t) from Cineflix Media, Steeplechase Films and Augusta Films.
The network is looking to build on its legacy of miniseries such as Hatfields & McCoys, starring Kevin Costner and Bill Paxton, which was a huge hit when it launched in 2012.
This comes after Rob Sharenow, President of Programming at A+E Networks, told Deadline earlier this summer that it was focusing on miniseries, including titles centered around Alcatraz and the Roman Empire, rather than returnable scripted series, which he called a “fraught path” for...

Just what we need, another reminder about the coronavirus pandemic. On Monday, History Channel ordered two new scripted miniseries as part of its move back to limited series, and one of them focuses on the Bubonic Plague breakout in 1665 London. The other is about the Donner Party, which didn’t go much better.
“The Plague Year” hails from A+E Studios and is being written by Coleman Herbert and executive produced by Michael Hirst, who has a “Vikings” connection with History. “The Donner Party” is written by Ric Burns, who will executive produce alongside Nancy Buirski.
Both projects are part of History Channel’s shift back to miniseries and away from ongoing dramas. It follows a George Washington miniseries and another about Alcatraz.
“History’s scripted programming in development embraces our roots with premium historical miniseries that resonate with our audience and complement our event megadoc content centered on big moments throughout our history.

History Channel is developing a pair of drama miniseries, including one executive produced by “Vikings” creator Michael Hirst.
The first is titled “The Plague Year,” which hails from writer Coleman Herbert with Hirst executive producing. The series is described as a portrait of 1665 London, during one of the all-time worst outbreaks of the Bubonic Plague. As Londoners of all stripes flee in droves, those who remain in the city, whether by choice or by fate, find their resolves tested and old wounds reopened, as they are faced with an impossible question: how do you keep going when everything around you has fallen to pieces? A+E Studios will produce.
“History’s scripted programming in development embraces our roots with premium historical miniseries that resonate with our audience and complement our event megadoc content centered on big moments throughout our history,” said Eli Lehrer, executive vice president and general manager for The History Channel.

Vikings creator Michael Hirst is reteaming with History Channel for a miniseries about the bubonic plague in 17th century London.
The project is one of two short-run shows in development at the cable network; the second is The Donner Party, from Ric Burns (New York: A Documentary Film). History is leaning into its roots in the scripted miniseries field as it moves away from ongoing scripted shows. The second half of Vikings’ sixth and final season is the only scripted series on the network’s docket at the moment, following the cancellations of Project Blue Book and Knightfall in May.

Since he burst on to the scene as Blaine Anderson on Glee, triple-threat Darren Criss has experienced a fandom few have every experienced (on this site, he has been … polarizing).
For the last several years, he has placed at #1 or #2 on TheBacklot’s Hot 100, and we have to admit to an affection for a certain Darren facial expression
Today is his 27th birthday, and because Darren is one of the most animated celebrities we know, here are 27 Gifs, which show the man in motion. Enjoy!
Darren has changed all of our lives, but did you know he actually affected the course of world history? Here are just a few examples of historic moments Darren witnessed.
He was there during the Big Bang! Or is it possible he … created it?
He was there when the dinosaurs became extinct! Fortunately, he was enjoying an underground rave at the time, so he escaped the meteor.

When a horror film sports the tagline "Based on a true story" or "Inspired by actual events," the terror quotient almost always goes up, and the films often does big box office numbers. A great recent example of this phenomenon is The Conjuring, which cleaned up during its theatrical run this summer. The idea that a film is rooted in some level of truth makes the experience more intense; even if the plot is 99% fiction, the feature is still enriched by the knowledge that there is even a shred of truth to what you are about to watch. In March, we ran a list showcasing ten terrifying movies based on actual events, and was succeeded by a follow up installment in September. We’re now proud to bring you ten more horror films that take a cue from reality.

The Donner Party was a group of pioneers who took a new path west in the 19th Century. They became trapped in the Sierra Nevada Mountains and relief was difficult because of the Mexican American War. Cannibalism and murder took place during one of the worst snowstorms to hit that region. These tragedies have been recorded in many films including the recent The Donner Party (2009) and even in 1999's Ravenous. In Donner Pass, the legend of cannibalism is still here, but this movie modernizes the legend. A truly innovative independent film, Donner Pass brings the cannibalism and the murder while also bringing a smart little story full of sub-plots and interesting characters.

There are few true-life "legends" that are as fitting to a horror film as the infamous "Donner Party." As you probably know, a group of settlers in 1846 got stuck in the mountains of Sierra Nevada and resorted to murder and cannibalism to survive. So while there is a large thread of fact that cuts through the various pop-culture renditions of this story, these days the Donner Party is remembered as a tragic mistake, a disturbing reminder of how close we are to beasts, and how great it is to have cars and airplanes nowadays. (Jokes aside, there was an indie film a few years back -- called simply The Donner Party -- that did a decent job of trying to color within the lines of historical fact.) The film we're here...

This is the second year SXSW has opened up the Panel Picker for its annual film conference, a tool that allows people to submit proposals for panels and other conference events. It's an ingenious way for the festival to vet proposals; instead of the staff or advisory panel coming up with all the ideas, anyone with a keyboard and an internet connection can submit a proposal, which is then voted on by the public, which gets a lofty 30 percent of the decision power. This is no small thing, since those who plan on attending the conference have the opportunity to weigh in on what they feel is relevant and keep the topics fresh. The only downside is that there are many panel proposals to read and decide among.
So please allow me to direct your attention to a Slackerwood-inspired panel: Removing Barriers Between Press, PR, and Producers, submitted by yours truly.

The Donner party, now the subject of a new Hollywood movie starring Crispin Glover (Beowulf), is one of the most riveting stories in American western history. 89 pioneers from the East Coast, many of them Irish, set off to cross into California over the Sierra Nevada's in the height of winter. Unfamiliar with the terrain, they became snowed in. On February 19, 1847, rescuers at last reached the Donner Party. They had been snowbound in the higher reaches of the Sierra Nevada mountains for months and nearly half the original 89 pioneers had perished from exposure or starvation. Worse, they had turned to cannibalism. Their story remains one of the most disturbing chapters in the history of the American West. Two Irish families, the Breens and the Reeds, were at the center of the story. Patrick Breen was born in Carlow, his wife Margaret and their seven children had emigrated to Iowa but were...

This is a massive week of releases featuring a handful of films even I have to catch up with (not to mention there’s something for everyone in today’s line-up). But enough rambling, on to the goods!
Finally on DVD in the Us this week is the Canadian pseudo-zombie film Pontypool (review, amazon) from one of my favourite Canadian directors Bruce McDonald. Be sure to watch through the end credits! And by the way, the Us DVD cover art is pretty awesome.
Highlander director Russell Mulcahy’s private investigator drama Give 'em Hell, Malone (amazon) hits store shelves. It stars a great cast featuring Thomas Jane, Doug Hutchison and Ving Rhames. Fans of hard-boiled revenge thrillers may want to take a peek at Takanori Tsujimoto’s Hard Revenge Milly (amazon).

Let’s make one thing perfectly clear, shall we? The trailer for T.J. Martin’s 2009 historical thriller “The Donner Party” isn’t particularly interesting, and, truthfully, I’m not sure if I’m willing to hand over 90 minutes of my life to something as questionable as this. That being said, watching cult actor and professional weirdo Crispin Glover portray William Foster may be worth the price of admission. In fact, that’s the only element in the entire preview that seems worthy of my attention, especially since the rest of the feature is one or two baby steps away from resembling a low-budget reenactment on The History Channel. You may feel differently once you’ve watched the trailer embedded below, but I’m thinking you won’t. Call it a hunch. Or indigestion. Hungry for more? Here’s a synopsis to whet your whistle: Based on the harrowing true story,...

Heading straight to video at the end of the month, The Donner Party features Crispin Glover in the latest cinematic recounting of one of the worst frontier tragedies of the 19th century. Except as a new trailer attests, this one's got an entirely unique, fresh angle for the 21st century. Or at least it's being sold that way -- and not necessarily in a good way.

Already shown at the Porta Vallarta Film Festival in December (as seen here), The Donner Party is making an impact on DVD store shelves January 26th. Starring the phenomenal Crispin Glover (Charlie's Angels) and others, The Donner Party involves the real life account of several settlers who became trapped in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Also, loosely, the basis for the film Necrosis, the first trailer for The Donner Party shows hopelessness, looming starvation, and some characters changing from sanity to madness under dire and stressful circumstances. The film has two positives and possibly more in that the film offers some historical lessons and an entertaining look at what people will go to in order to survive (cannibalism, murder). Have a look at the trailer inside along with other important details from the The Donner Party.

The obvious approach for a film about the Donner Party, one of the most infamous stories of deadly misadventure in American history, would be horror. But in T.J. Martin's The Donner Party, an Austin Film Festival selection, the historic event gets a well deserved dramatic approach that makes it all the more unsettling.
Like most dramatic retellings, the ultimate end is known, but the journey, quite literally in this case, is more important than the end result. Several groups of pioneers converged to form the Donner Party on the way to California, but after following a "new" route, ended up stranded in the Sierra Nevadas through the winter and spring of 1846.

On the film festival circuit in September is Conor McPherson’s new movie “The Eclipse,” starring Ciaran Hinds and Aidan Quinn, which opened the 2009 Los Angeles Irish Film Festival. The supernatural flick also opened the Tribeca Film Festival and is expected to be released in the U.S. later this year. The Quinn family, as a whole, is raising its Hollywood profile behind the camera as well. Acclaimed cinematographer Declan Quinn (Aidan’s brother, whose most recent movie was “The Private Lives of Pippa Lee,” starring Robin Wright) will soon be serving as cinematographer on a film called “Good Ol’ Boy,” to be directed by his other brother, Paul Quinn. Talk about all in the family! Declan Quinn is also serving as cinematographer on a documentary about Bob Marley, directed by Jonathan Demme, as well Jim Sheridan’s aforementioned project “Black Mass.” Declan Quinn is not the only busy Irish-American cinematographer.

Crispin Glover has boarded Tim Burton’s take on “Alice in Wonderland,” which is currently in principal photography.
The Hollywood Reporter says Glover is playing the Knave of Hearts, who goes on trial for stealing the Queen of Heart’s tarts.
Glover joins a cast that includes Mia Wasikowska, Johnny Depp, Anne Hathway, Helena Bonham Carter and Matt Lucas.
