It’s been a memorable few years for Nicolas Cage, or at least it looks that way to his sizable fan base.
A noted period of extremely prolific yet mostly uncelebrated work in the low-budget world of filmmaking was punctured by a ferocious performance in Panos Cosmatos’ wild action horror Mandy in 2018, while his uncharacteristically quiet — but equally intense — turn in last year’s Pig would bring him the sort of critical acclaim not seen since he won an Oscar for 1995’s Leaving Las Vegas.
Earlier this year came the ultimate tribute, The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, in which he played a fictionalized version of himself. Now, the much-loved cult icon comes to Toronto with another landmark achievement. Incredibly (and Cage thinks so, too), Butcher’s Crossing from director Gabe Polsky marks the star’s first ever Western. Based on the book by John Williams,...

May on the Criterion Channel will be good to the auteurs. In fact they’re giving Richard Linklater better treatment than the distributor of his last film, with a 13-title retrospective mixing usual suspects—the Before trilogy, Boyhood, Slacker—with some truly off the beaten track. There’s a few shorts I haven’t seen but most intriguing is Heads I Win/Tails You Lose, the only available description of which calls it a four-hour (!) piece “edited together by Richard Linklater in 1991 from film countdowns and tail leaders from films submitted to the Austin Film Society in Austin, Texas from 1987 to 1990. It is Linklater’s tribute to the film countdown, used by many projectionists over the years to cue one reel of film after another when switching to another reel on another projector during projection.” Pair that with 2008’s Inning by Inning: A Portrait of a Coach and your completionism will be on-track.

The Working Class Goes to Heaven: Marcello Retrofits London’s Ruminations on Superficial Social Status
Pietro Marcello brings his unconventional sensibilities to new heights with Martin Eden, transporting Jack London’s 1909 Oakland set novel to Naples for his first full-blown theatrical narrative. Heretofore working as a documentarian or in hybrid formats (The Mouth of the Wolf; Lost and Beautiful), it’s certainly a curious move in itself, considering the semi-autobiographical novel from London, who is best known in his native US for wilderness adventure novels such as White Fang, The Call of the Wild and The Sea Wolf (all perennially resurrected in America cinema), is among one of the author’s best works.…...

The Notebook Primer introduces readers to some of the most important figures, films, genres, and movements in film history.Above: The Light that FailedShe had the beauty and talent of the most captivating star, the unwavering determination of the most ambitious producer, and the fervent creative vision of the most gifted director. Ida Lupino could fall into any number of categories, yet with a significance that remains almost immeasurable, perhaps the one word best describing this groundbreaking artist is simply this: she was a pioneer. Born February 4, 1918, in South London, Lupino belonged to a revered family of entertainers. Her mother, actress Connie O’Shea (also known as Connie Emerald), and her father, music hall comedian Stanley Lupino, were part of an ancestral dynasty of performers, and young Ida was accordingly encouraged to take the stage during her earliest years. In addition to writing her first play at the age of seven,...

Now restored to perfection, this genuine classic hasn’t been seen intact for way over sixty years. Michael Curtiz and Robert Rossen adapt Jack London’s suspenseful allegory in high style, with a superb quartet of actors doing some of their best work: Robinson, Garfield, Lupino and newcomer Alexander Knox.

Ron Howard has wanted to go sailing for a while. In the ’80s, he flirted with directing a film called “Rainbow Warrior,” based on a real event in which the Greenpeace ship of the same name was hijacked. In the ’90s, he was in talks to make an adaptation of the Jack London novel “Sea Wolf.” Both projects eventually fell through. But “In the Heart of the Sea,” which opened Friday, is “the culmination of a long wish to do an adventure story at seas,” the director said. The movie, based on the book by Nathaniel Philbrick about the true story.

The Sea Wolf started life in 1904 as an adventure novel written by American journalist and author Jack London. Since it was first published, the story has been adapted for the screen no fewer than thirteen times. The latest version, released on DVD last week, was made in 2009 as an epic two part 3 hour TV movie co-produced by Canada and Germany. The film’s truly international cast includes Sebastian Koch, Neve Campbell and Tim Roth.
Wolf Larsen (Koch) is the tyrannical Captain of the notorious seal hunting vessel, the Sea Wolf. While on the high seas, he takes on castaway Humphrey Van Wyden (Stephen Campbell Moore). But instead of abandoning him at the next harbour, Wolf puts the mild mannered literary critic to work and rules over him with an unyielding iron fist. Much to Wolf’s surprise, the graft transforms Van Wyden into a hardened adversary – every bit as formidable as Wolf himself.

The upcoming Teutonic retelling of "Moby Dick" has its Ahab: William Hurt has signed on to play the megamaniacal, peg-legged captain of the whaler Pequod, and Ethan Hawke has inked to play Starbuck, the first officer who is just about the only sailor who defies him.
Based on Herman Melville's 1851 novel, the miniseries is being produced by Herbert Kloiber's Tele Munchen and is being called the most expensive project in the German company's 40-year history. The budget is clocking at $25 million.
"We are delighted to have signed up two such powerful, charismatic and versatile actors as William Hurt and Ethan Hawke for the lead roles," Kloiber said.
Germany's Rtl, Austria's Orf and Robert Halmi's Rhi Entertainment have boarded as partners on the project.
Further foreign sales of the mini should take place in Cannes during the upcoming Mipcom TV trade show. There is no U.S. deal in place.

Cologne, Germany -- Herbert Kloiber and his media group TMG are returning to the high seas with a two-part miniseries based on Hermann Melville’s whale hunting classic “Moby Dick.”
Screenwriter Nigel Williams (“Elizabeth I”), who penned the script to Tmg’s recent oceanic adventure “The Sea Wolf” will adapt Melville’s novel. “Sea Wolf” producer Rikolt von Gagern and his Gate shingle are also on board the new project, with Rhi Entertainment and London-based Power Corp. International taking English-language rights. Tmg International will handle world sales.
Kloiber will again be going head-to-head with German channel ProSieben, which has its own “Moby Dick” project in the works. ProSieben and Tmg both brought out versions of “Sea Wolf” this year.
The white whale seems to be on everyone’s mind. Universal recently picked up a new “Moby Dick” adaptation, which Timur Bekmambetov (“Wanted”) is set to direct from a screenplay by Adam Cooper and Bill Collage.
