A more refreshing and abstract sketch that can fill up time on the internet
angry_aki8 December 2010
Of the many sketch shows being offered at the moment, and backed with the ease of access to such comedy the internet gives us, I believe it is somewhat pleasing to see a familiar face perform something new. Matt King (as made famous by his character 'Super Hans' and his part in James Nesbitts' "Jeckyll") offers an edge to the show that could not be filled by most comic actors.

The show brings together a collection of characters from across the social spectrum and adds a satirical twist, giving someone lovable figures in society such as Prue-school teachers a socio-pathic edge. The material produced itself is a series of refreshing media.

So So...

Warning: Spoilers
To be quite honest I only gave this a shot because of the name. Unfortunately Google image searching 'dog face' is invariably funnier than any of the actual dog based jokes after which the programme is named. This one appears to be of a dog balancing a sausage on its nose for instance. Sounds like the longest and most failure ridden photo shoot in the world to me...

Anyway, Matt King's character of Super Hans in Peep Show always annoyed me a little bit. However his over-the-top uncouthness offset the other characters very well and the series would not have been the same without him. This show is like that but without the other characters to balance it out.

I cannot stand 'laddish' humour which is invariably just about tits and football... so I am a tad bias anyway and hence every single one of the sketches with dogs sat around in a pub failed entirely for me. That said there were some good moments and some jokes which worked very well. It is a shame I found so much of the content infuriating beyond belief because there were some genuine gems scattered throughout.

It could make for a decent half hour, if someone compiled all the episodes into one. Only minus all the dogs and any sketches with a character whose grasp of the English language was akin to a copy of the Oxford English dictionary being throw out of a lavatory window...

As I said... bias.

You only need to watch one episode

Every single joke is the same.....you can see it coming a mile off every time which makes it significantly less funny. Not even "so not funny that it's funny" it's just not funny. Simple as.

Funny, but repetitive...

As a big fan of Peep Show and Matt King, I ploughed through all 6 episodes of Dog Face on 4OD recently, and there is probably about an hour of comedy gold thinly spread across nearly three hours.

It's not to say that it's not worth watching every episode, but they clearly filmed 7 or 8 scenes for each sketch then put one in each episode! So you can laugh at the funniest version of each scenario, then smile as they rehash several similar, but less funny versions over and over again.

If they condensed the best bits into a one hour special, it would shine!
